In our @UCLpress book ‘What Photographs Do’ Steve Woodhouse describes The @V_and_A Guard Books. These 859 volumes record the Museum's photography of its collections, building and events 1856-1997. They hold over 270,000 albumen, platinotype and silver gelatin photographs... 🧵

This photograph by Francis Bedford was taken in the summer of 1853 at Marlborough House, a precursor to @V_and_A . It shows some of the earliest objects in the collection, which had previously been displayed in the Great Exhibition. I enjoy tracking them down in stores today...
