This is why I love translators. We have egos but (with some exceptions) they aren't THAT inflated. We recognize that our translation of a book need not be, indeed should not be, the only one. The more translations the better, because it allows the original work to fully flower...

One of the reasons Oğuz Atay is so special: gist of the passage is that he threw open the floodgates of Turkish literary modernism, forcing Turkish literature to abandon “realism” as an aesthetic standard and embrace the fantastic or romantic nature of “a person’s inner world.”

This is nuts: Per Orhan Pamuk, in the 1970s only about 40 books got published annually in Turkey. Half of them he'd flip through at the book store and decide they weren't any good, then buy the other half and "buckle down to read."

Because a translated work can still live/breath/affect and have that afterlife W Benjamin talks about despite lexical errors and mistranslations. A great example of that is Deborah Smith's translation of Han Kang's The Vegetarian.
