Earlier this month, a British firm tried to export beef jerky to Australia. Despite the much-vaunted post Brexit free-trade agreement it was turned away at the border. In fact, since the FTA came in the UK has not been able to export any beef to Australia.
Good of
@mrjamesob
to highlight my story on the lack of beef exports to Australia under the free-trade deal, but it would have been nice of him to mention the article he was reading directly from was by
@NationalWorld
.
'Guess how much beef has been exported to Australia since Boris Johnson and Liz Truss' deal... Zero, zilch, nada!'
@mrjamesob
explores the 'benefits of Brexit' as no British beef has been exported to Australia under the UK’s first post-EU trade deal due to red tape.
@LizWebsterSBF
told me that the Australia FTA was “totally flabbergasting incompetence squandering British prosperity for short term adulation of being seen to sign trade deals quickly”. She said the Aussies were "laughing all the way to the bank".
Since the FTA came into affect last may, Australian farmers have exported 1,700 tonnes of beef to the UK. However none has gone the other way, as the UK did not seek a reciprocal deal. Experts believe it would take three years for UK companies to get approved for export.
Some personal news - delighted to say I will be joining

as it’s Westminster correspondent from tomorrow. There’s change in government and I’ll be explaining how that will affect people in Yorkshire. Get in touch if you’d like to grab a coffee.
I asked Rishi Sunak's spokesman if the PM accepts these new border checks show Brexit is causing additional red tape for businesses? He said no.
The FSB said businesses will have to "pass costs onto customers, reduce their offering or shut up shop”.

Got to be Shane Bond - 18 matches and 87 wickets at an average of 22. Such a shame that his career was ravaged by back injuries. Still arguably New Zealand's second greatest fast bowler after Hadlee?
The

Breaking: Stella Creasy has been re-elected as Labour MP for Walthamstow again. She mentions the need for a police presence during the campaign and passionatelt hits out at those who sow "hate and division".
This seems an awful lot of police for a non-violent protest in an empty, with oligarch Oleg Deripaska banned from travelling to the UK anyway. Often when investigating crimes like burglary, maybe one officer will turn up at a victim's house, and then it will never be followed up.
BUT, one of the key selling points of Brexit we were told was the ability to trade around the world. And if there’s minimal gain from in this case (exporting beef to Australia), plus all the additional red tape now that comes with trading with the EU - what was the point!?!
Tory backbencher shouts out “playing politics” as Keir Starmer quotes sub-postmaster Chris Head, who’s angry about the delays in compensation. I’m not sure that’s the best approach …

Some personal news - following a restructure at

Looking forward to getting stuck in as the country gears up for (yet another) general election.

Government: "We work closely with the farming industry to identify, prioritise, and resolve trade barriers for food products, including British beef. Industry have been clear that Australia is currently not a priority for market access, but we will keep this under close review".

Was taking a hen party on a punt tour around Cambridge. After demanding I strip down to my boxers, they asked me for advice as the bride to be was pregnant with the best man. I said honesty is usually the best policy and kept my mouth shut for the next 45 minutes.

when announcing a cut to the high rate of capital gains tax on property sales.
However, whenever he sells the seven flats he owns in Southampton, he's effectively given himself a big tax cut. A flat in the same block sold for £925K in 2022.

How has Brexit gone? "Terribly" - that's the view of one of the farmers at the protest this week, who voted to leave the EU.
He was even more succinct when I asked his view on the trade deals the UK has signed: "Shit." A reminder of the Australian FTA:

I think the map is using the phrase “invaded” slightly loosely - can’t think of when Britain has invaded Italy or Russia except troops going there during the world wars - not sure that counts as an invasion. Obviously not talking about anything that happened under Empire.

An additional point on this: very few UK businesses want to export beef to Australia, as there’s almost no market due to Aussie beef being much cheaper. It also takes a while to ramp up trade with these FTAs, hence the first attempt to export this month.
The government has quietly ditched Boris Johnson's much vaunted Brexit dividend of the return to imperial measures after 98.7% of 100K survey respondents were against it. Issues cited as "consumer confusion and increased costs for businesses".
David Cameron effectively admits that it was easier to tackle the asylum crisis before Brexit.

Brexit red tape latest: in October, all UK meat and dairy products will be required to have 'Not for EU' labels. The Food and Drink Federation has said this “poses significant risk to exports” and polls show this would put Britons off buying them.

The national service plan appears to effectively prohibit 18-year-olds from having regular weekend work, students being able to work on weekends and going on gap years. No thought appears to have gone into young people with tricky financial circumstances or work as unpaid caters.

I think that’s harsh and makes us sound like a pretty entitled fanbase - we’ve lost our first game for 17 matches and everyone is going bonkers. I thought Dubravka and Manquillo were good, Anderson has only played a handful of senior games, Wood is OK as a third choice striker.
Two serving Met officers and one former Met officer have been charged over 'offensive' WhatsApp messages shared with Sarah Everard's killer Wayne Couzens. The CPS has said IDs not released for "operational reasons" - what reasons for the retired officer?
