Ballot never showed, screw it. I am risking my immunosuppressed health to vote early this week, and get on metro to do it. I also want a Mystics "I voted" sticker really badly. See you Wed at the polls folks!
Metro dropping this bombshell of an announcement, means the roads will be jam packed. We all need to look out for each other while out on the streets commuting tomorrow. Especially kids walking to schools in all 8 Wards.
Reminder that a โregularโ cold and flu for you, could be ugly for someone else. Now, think about the same thing with COVID. There is a reason a lot of us are scared, and wish youโd just for once consider how ableism and eugenics are rampant in society.
FORTY(!!!) trains. That is all that will be running across the entire DMV area tomorrow. We should all be pissed that this decision was made at the 11th hour. And, posted on twitter nonetheless.
The disability community has been trying to bring attention to this forever. No one listens. Itโs not just the elderly that live these homes either. Regardless, the way we treat our fellow humans as disposable is deplorable.
โI get this sense sometimes that people are thinking: โOh, itโs just another nursing home. Itโs not a real tragedy. They were already at the end of their roadโ...But theyโre still people. Theyโre still alive.โ
I have kept my mouth shut mostly but here is my reality:
I cannot "take off work" when I get a chance to work, I can't quarantine because I can barely afford food. (Stocking up on food with an ED is a nightmare anyways) I cannot get 90 day refills of my meds, they are CS.
So many people want to totally get rid of cars, without engaging nor considering the impacts on the very diverse needs of the disability community. The answers are not either, or. There are plenty of ways to ensure accessible city infrastructure, while having vision zero.
This is what taking an oath to serve your city looks like. (We will continue to do this work in our colleagues name, Dr. Decker. You are missed.)

@MayorBowser
DC in the snow is a good reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city. Add in neighbors helping neighbors, and I would not want to be anywhere else. So, please keep our sidewalks/curb cuts accessible today. ๐๐โ๏ธ
If you are hosting a virtual event for the disability advocacy community, and charging 100+ dollars, offering no financial help, you are not doing intersectional work. ๐
Apparently a lot of people have yet to get the message: once you get vaccinated, you still have to practice distancing, wearing masks, etc etc.
This is not the MMR folks. ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ
The process for *senior citizens* to get the vaccine in New York City involves a 51 step online questionnaire that includes uploading multiple attachments.
Welp, my disabled butt will be only supporting businesses who have vaccine and mask mandates in place. I only do delivery and pickup when I need to, but this makes even those options less safe. Thanks to
@LauraHayesDC
for the updated list of restros taking public health seriously
Long COVID exists. The disability community knows that colds and flus can be detrimental. This is no small detail folks. Stop focusing on just death and hospitalizations.
This is not how a city should engage their residents. A city should have a plan in place for emergencies and disasters. This is an emergency. A city should always coordinate with their office of disability resources.
@male_melissa
@PGE4Me
Hi Melissa - We are asking those in the potentially affected area who are power-dependent for medical reasons to use their own resources to get out. If they are unable to relocate and power loss will cause an immediate life threat, call 911 for transport to an Emergency Room.
Hey
#CripTheVote
@CoryBooker
just came out on MSNBC and flat out said that mental illness is not responsible for the mass shootings, but hate and white supremacy are.
Normalize having live translation and captions at every single meeting and event. You will open up more civic engagement to the disability community when people donโt have to ask for accommodations.
I am just desperate to get these thoughts out of my brain. I don't expect any responses to this whatsoever. I just wish people would be more introspective and understand how oppression works and to actually step aside and let others have a chance. Now I will go duck and hide.
I feel like my life does not matter at all right now. It's like you are drowning all the time while people are just standing at the edge watching you while doing nothing.
Iโm so angry. Weโve worked so hard to keep the city going while looking out for our neighbors in a deadly pandemic. They have put the entire city at risk.
New story: After hearing from young cancer patients and people with severe disabilities desperate for a vaccine, DC sets new eligibility rules. People considered overweight (but not obese) and smokers are left out.
@advocatEquality
Yeah, I thought about it. But, I would rather go in person and make sure it is accessible to all and thank our poll workers. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I do not trust your program unless you are invested in completely decoupling policing and the carceral system from healthcare. There is data to back me up too.
Folks, I am not going to argue with you over our disability community and access needs. We are not a monolith, and you will not back me into a corner over these issues.
I cannot urge everyone enough,

Another thing - it is really hard to be on here lately because a lot of people who sit on multiple axis of privilege in the communities I am a part of are gatekeepers. Anyways, follow me - unfollow me, it's fine.
"Newly uncovered documents show the consulting giant helped ICE find 'detention savings opportunities' โ including measures the agencyโs staff sometimes viewed as too harsh on immigrants."
Hey people hoarding water - some of us need bottled water as a way to properly track water intake for medical treatment. (I am one of these,, thanks ED for messing with my kidneys) Please do not buy water if you really do not need to.
Once again folks, this about much more than voting. A lot of us receive medical care and treatment through the USPS. This will affect the disability community in an astronomical way. I do not have a Rep to call, but you do. Please call your Reps - flood the lines.
The City of Houston is giving out vaccines better than any place Iโve seen nationally. My entire FB feed is filled with people I love who are healthcare workers, immunosuppressed, and 65+ getting theirs. Well done
@SylvesterTurner
So, those of us who are in the disability community cannot ride metro without a mask mandate, and now this. We will not go silently out of society, people. Have you met us?
Notice: Masks are no longer required for passengers or operators of ride-hailing vehicles, taxis, or other for-hire vehicles. Masking is still recommended for personal protection. Learn more at
Please remember if youโre holding virtual events about RBG this weekend that itโs Rosh Hashanah and you should wait to schedule them to be inclusive of Jews
Iโm too angry right now so going back off for a while. Both of my parents, both boosted and wear masks everywhere, are positive. Our lives matter. Fuck this eugenics crap. Also, go punch some Nazis for me while we are at it.
Iโm annoyed at certain closures for Christmas. Not all of us are Christian, and we still should have access to public health such as testing. Nope, we got three days of shutting down and historic case numbers.
Great tips from Imani! Also, you should be following your local emergency management team (local government). Itโs hurricane preparedness, but for cold. Stay warm!
To my disabled southerners experiencing snow for the first time:
-if the ground looks wet but itโs cold out, thatโs black ice, avoid it.
-sometimes indoors is more dangerous than outdoors. Careful which floor cleaning products you use because of mixed with rock salt
It is over 1 million (let's be real.) And most, preventable. It takes a whole of society and government approach. Do not go blame it on just vaccines, look around you right now. It is everywhere because of everyone. These are our fellow humans that are gone forever.
ALERT: As part of the investigation into the Blue Line derailment, Metro is holding out of service all of its 7000-series railcars, which is about 60% of its rail fleet.ย Without these rail cars, Metro will operate about 40 trains tomorrow. 1/2
Crying in public is never a reason to call the cops (or whatever hotline) on someone else. Folks need to learn to be comfortable with basic emotions from others FFS.
Hey friends,
I was strapped by feet and wrists to a bed, against my will, and given haldol even though I was just grieving loss.
The cops and medical professionals at the hospital were so unprofessional an abusive that Iโve been in a panic for over 48 hrs.

So I cannot go into businesses who are fine without indoor masking at all. I am a member of the disability community, care about my community, and others. I cannot take the risk myself, nor to others. Iโm just being super real here ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
Major update to DC mask policy today. Mayor Bowser dropping mask requirement for fully vaccinated, effective today, except in certain places like schools, transpo, health facilities. Also if a biz requires it would need to comply with that.
@fox5dc
CW: police violence
We were still busy driving unhoused people to their new spaces & wanted to be thoughtful about how to share this.
But at the end of the eviction of unhoused people at Columbus Circle today Parks Police tased & involuntary committed a unhoused woman.

I just saw this on my TL and wanted to say congrats. Please tell baby Ruby that a lady named Rachael, born exactly 40 years ago on her birthday, is working hard to fight for a just and equitable world for her. ๐๐๐๐ผ

Thank you for this thread. Iโve been screaming about this for weeks because of their use of ableist rhetoric, both on social media and in interviews.
Folks, please (I am begging you), follow our local EMs, local transpo folks, local reporters, fire/EMS, etc.
*and be mindful of time stamps while you are at it

You cannot erase the coupling of mental health care with policing in these conversations. They are intertwined. We also need to stop criminalizing/pathologizing what is deemed as "normal" emotional states. My friend
@ConnConnection
has written more about this than anyone I know!
Thread: Heartbreaking and infuriating. As a mental health professional, I know this didn't need to happen. I also know that it continues to happen because of glaring issues within our systems.
Wish I could protest in person, but I can't do it safely. Also, living alone means seeking community in times like this. This is why it was hard to walk away for me today. Also, I am processing my own stuff right now so this is just not helping. Apologies for my annoying TL today
๐ โLilly Simon, a 33-year-old in Brooklyn, does not have monkeypox. She does have neurofibromatosis type 1, a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow at her nerve endings.โ
I feel so weird celebrating tonight. Said the prayers on the phone with my parents like we always do. Thatโs all I got. People are begging just to live, and be treated with value.
Retweeting this thread โฆ for no reason whatsoever. STOP linking gun violence to mental health. Improve mental health services because we need to have an adequately resourced, culturally competent, community-based system of care. Not because it might stop gun violence. (It wonโt)
