Lisala Folau said he climbed on a tree to escape but when he got down another big wave swept him away. After being "bashed around by the big waves that kept coming," he said he slowly managed to swim 7.5km to Tongatapu, reaching the shore 27 hours later.

Ardern: Ash has stopped falling in Nuka'lofa. The Tongan government has accepted a NZ government offer for a reconnaissance flight, and an Orion will take off tomorrow morning provided conditions allow. At present ash has been spotted at 63,000 feet.
