. Sued by Imelda Marcos for calling her husband a thief & dictator. Said sorry, corrected myself & said her husband is a dead thief & dictator.
19 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, in a case that I personally helped litigate, the Philippines Supreme Court described that P36 billion as “money stolen by the Marcos spouses from the Republic of the Philippines.” | |
20M Filipinos living in poverty line. $109B in foreign debt. Those are at least 2 reasons why the Philippines president shouldn’t stay at the Carlyle Hotel, where suites can cost between $10k-15k a night. So why are Marcos Jr. and his entourage staying there? 1/5

Another Marcos lie. It wasn’t “for whatever reason” that he couldn’t come to any part of the U.S. for over 17 years. He was afraid of being arrested for NOT paying $2B his family owes 10,000 victims of the Marcos dictatorship. His immunity is temporary. His liability is forever.
Lino Brocka, 1st Filipino director to win at Cannes, called your experimental cinema “a mockery of filmmaking” while “censorship exists in regular theaters.” Your father jailed Brocka & banned his anti-dictatorship film. You did nothing for the film industry.

In March 1986, Marcos Jr. drove to Honolulu airport to make a secret call on a payphone. He called a Swiss banker to instruct him to hide ill-gotten Marcos funds before they could be frozen. Some were frozen. Some were not. Remember: money-laundering is only a phone call away.
Thank you to leaders around the world who have extended their congratulations following our country’s historic elections.
I look forward with great enthusiasm to working with the international community as the 17th President of the Republic of the Philippines.
HISTORY SHOWS A NAZI GAVE IRENE MARCOS HER WEDDING RIDE: The Marcoses spent at least $10.3M in 1983 for Irene Marcos’ pretend-royal wedding. That silver carriage that Marcos Sr. & his daughter rode in? As told in Carmen Navarro-Pedrosa’s “The Rise and Fall of Imelda Marcos” …
18 years ago this month, just after we recovered $683M of her family’s ill-gotten Swiss funds, she sued me for calling her husband ‘a thief and a dictator.’ So I said sorry, I was wrong, and the correction is now on my Twitter profile. We have to be truthful about Marcos, right?
19 years ago this month, she sued me for libel for calling her husband a “thief and dictator.” I said sorry, I was wrong and … ah, the rest is on my profile :) 1/2
In 1987, Marcos Sr. was asked in a US court if he & Imelda used the names ‘William Saunders’ & ‘Jane Ryan’ to open Swiss accounts. He invoked his right vs self-incrimination. Because it’s true: he stole WW2 reparations money & opened the accounts. Still a beneficiary: Marcos Jr.
WHY MARCOS JR DOESN’T CARE about reparations for Filipina comfort women: From 1966-1981, his father already took $47M in ‘kickbacks’ from Japanese WWII reparations-funded projects — “equivalent to 15.9 percent of the $300M reparations” from Japan.

A MAID AND MALACAÑANG: During the dictatorship, the Marcoses ordered the arrest and detention of a pregnant ‘maid’ and her driver-husband. Why? To try and force them to testify against their former employer: the Aquino family.

If Marcos Jr ‘donates’ P2M [$40,000] every time a typhoon hits the Philippines, Filipinos will have to suffer at least 62,000 more typhoons before they can get all of the remaining P125B [$2.5B] ill-gotten wealth still to be recovered from his family.

From my armchair & expertise in fighting plunderers & dictators, I see sons who're sitting where they are thanks to plunder & dictatorship.
20 years ago this week, she sued me for libel. She said I libeled the dictator by calling him a thief in a press conference. So I called another press con. I said: “Sorry. I was wrong. I should not have said Marcos was a thief. I should have said: “Marcos is a dead thief.”
WHO GOES TO JAIL IN THE PHILIPPINES: the airport guard who allegedly stole a passenger’s ‘smartwatch’ OR a former gov’t official, who in 21 years in power with her husband only had $304,000 in legal income but wears a $15,000 Bulgari watch, one of many she bought from that store?
The only way is to confront them with the truth. As PCGG commissioner, I had a list of their pending ill-gotten wealth cases published in a newspaper. Then Rep. Imee Marcos demanded I go to her office to explain why I did. I said no: “I have an office , too. Come see me there.”
WATCH: As Imee Marcos poses with her family, Martial Law victims in the crowd shout "Never again to Martial Law!" Asked for comment, Marcos says she only hears them chant "Imee, solusyon" as she "always has solutions." Related story:

Vietnam. 26 soldiers were charged. Only one was convicted but was pardoned after 3 years. Still no US apology or reparations. Remember this when the US demands accountability elsewhere.
HOW TO RUIN A MARCOS HOLIDAY: A Marcos hometown official ‘declared’ the dictator's birthday a school holiday. I drafted a protest letter as PCGG commissioner. PCGG chair Haydee Yorac signed. Education Secretary Raul Roco acted. Because corrupt dictators don’t deserve the honor.
TRUE STORY: in 2003, after we recovered $680M from the Marcoses, then Finance Secretary Sid Camacho asked the PCGG: “Can we park this money in our dollar reserves? It’s been a long time since we’ve had more dollars coming in than going out. It will boost our economy.” We agreed.
I once again offer my hand of reconciliation to those with different political persuasions to come together as one in forging a better society — one that will pursue progress and peace and a better life for all Filipinos.

Kasama ba diyan sa “pang mayaman” ang mga pamilyang taga-Cavite na nakinabang sa korupsyon ni Marcos at panunupil sa mga manggagawang nagtatayo ng unyon sa export processing zone?
Methinks this is one of the reasons why the Leni campaign projects an elitist image. The “pang mayaman” reputation is only further reinforced. Disclosure: I studied both at the Ateneo and De la Salle.
The Philippines showed other countries that the ill-gotten wealth of ex-dictators can be recovered. Now, some of those other countries are showing Filipinos that no matter how long it takes or how powerful they are, corrupt ex-dictators and politicians can be held accountable.
UPDATE: It wasn’t. Not one country nor an ‘avalanche of withdrawals’ followed the Philippines. It did not stop the Prosecutor. It did not end her investigation. It did not accomplish anything. Except expose the ignorance, mediocrity and hypocrisy of Duterte and his lawyers.
"This is the beginning of the end of ICC." Sec. Harry Roque believes the Philippines' decision to quit the International Criminal Court will start an avalanche of withdrawals from other countries.

When you try to be woke but instead show the hypocrite you are: it was your family that plundered Philippine forests: “From 1965 to 1986, 7M hectares of forests were lost because of Marcos' timber licensing agreements,” reducing nearly 50% of forest cover.
When you pretend they can’t smell the stink your family left behind.
STORY: In 2003, we got back $680M in ill-gotten Marcos Swiss bank funds — except $23M ‘frozen’ by a Swiss bank in Singapore. I initiated the PCGG case to get the $23M back. In 2014, the PH won. Marcos lost.
THE WORST PART OF IRENE MARCOS’ WEDDING: when the Marcoses spent at least $10.3M from ill-gotten wealth for that wedding, the Philippines foreign debt stood at $20 billion owed to some 300 banks. The country was broke. The people were suffering. The Marcoses were celebrating.
Amid public fears that the return of the Marcos family to Malacañang would lead to historical distortion, the newly appointed press secretary Trixie Cruz Angeles thinks that the issue of martial law should be “open to debate.”
The U.S. newspaper of record makes it clear no one is taking him seriously by calling him by the only thing he’s known for: “the son and namesake of the former dictator.”
