Macross is an interesting show to watch after years of absorbing a lot of other 80s mecha. it's not as frenetic or inscrutable as a lot of Tomino stuff. not as dry or distanced as Takahashi. much hornier than either.

When you read a lot of Japanese manga scholarship, you start to notice that shojo/shonen isn't being used purely as a demographic descriptor - it's also describing stylistic cycles. I.e., Terra E fits the model of a shojo style even if it's technically a "shonen manga".
