I’m very excited that Kunshan now has a subway system! It opened recently. This is a great new alternative for traveling to Suzhou: safer, greener, and more affordable than driving/Didi. 👍
The multiple streams framework (MSF) is widely used in public policy teaching & research to explain why societal issues are (not) addressed & policies (not) made. Tianlei Qiu & I reviewed 178 articles that use this framework to examine China. Now available in
@policy_politics
.
For International Women's Day (tmrw), I don't need half a day off & I certainly don't need flowers, body lotion, or other gifts. Instead, what we need is equality & inclusion for all genders. Here are 3 simple tips for men in academia ⬇️ Feel free to add more. Happy Women's Day!
Highly recommended recent book: "Methods of the policy process." A powerful resource for students, researchers, teachers, journal editors, and peer reviewers in policy process research. Thank you
@IRPPJournal
for the invitation to reflect on this book!

Beijing 2004. ⬇️ Today 18 years ago I arrived in China (Beijing) for the very first time. This is the first picture I took. Lots of people on bicycles. Fewer cars than now.
Kunshan lockdown day 2⃣0⃣. 😫 Today we got a reward chart. For each day you do the covid test, you get a sticker. When the card is full (= 7 tests), you get a gift. It'd better be a good gift ...
Leaving China is complicated these days. It’s not possible to take a taxi from Kunshan to airport (must change car at Jiangsu-Shanghai border). Kunshan’s train stations are still closed. Instead, I took taxi to Suzhou train station. Very few trains, limited ticket availability.
Prior to moving to China, I defended my PhD dissertation at the
@UvA_Amsterdam
on public health crises in China. Highly relevant for the current
#nCoV19
outbreak. It provides background for understanding the current situation:
#nCoV2020
#WuhanCoronavirus
Remember that I would get a gift after a full reward chart? Today I did another covid-test, got my final sticker. 🥳 The gift is a little ... underwhelming. Hold your breath .... We got face masks. 😞 😂
Congratulations to Wei Li at Huazhong University of Science and Technology! 🎉 This is the first edited volume that specifically focuses on policy processes in China. ⬇️
New book arrival! 🥳 Many thanks to the editors for this volume on the Multiple Streams Framework, which is widely used in public policy to analyze why policymakers pay attention to some issues but not to others. I contributed with a chapter on China’s Soil Pollution Law.

Air quality in Amsterdam versus in my new hometown of Kunshan in China. Dangerously high air quality levels all throughout the Netherlands due to New Year’s Eve fireworks. Interesting event from a environmental policy research perspective. I'll dedicate a thread to it.

Today I visited the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre, with posters covering the past 100 years. Some of the posters fit well in China's current context, especially those focused on science, technology, and innovation.
Today it is exactly 20 years ago that I arrived in China for the very first time. I still remember my excitement to explore a new language, culture, and country. It's been a very interesting journey and I'm curious to see what the next two decades will bring.
Today my district here in Kunshan allowed everyone to leave their compounds & roam around freely within the district. For me, it was the first time in 14 days to leave the compound. Flowers & trees all smelled amazing. At night we learned that tmrw we'll go back into lockdown.😫

My office for the next couple of days. I’m in Huangshan (the Yellow Mountains), which is well known for its pine trees, spectacularly shaped peaks, and its clouds.
Day 2️⃣ of COPPR24 was great! I chaired a panel on policy processes in authoritarian contexts, attended two China-focused panels & two roundtables! Lots of food for thought. In the afternoon, the ☀️ came out, allowing me to explore the Syracuse University campus.
The
#COPPR23
in Denver was fantastic: cutting-edge research, well-organized, and a supportive community. This new conference will be an important driving force for theory development in the field of policy process research. I look forward to the 2024 edition!
Say no to the manel. If you're invited to a panel, ask who else is on it & do not take part in a manel. When you organize a panel, make sure you invite women and other underrepresented groups. Call manels out if you see them.
So excited that my new course on plastic pollution has been approved! 😀 Dear academics researching plastic, would you have any suggestions for readings, field trips, movies, videos, activities, or experiments? It's an upper-level undergraduate course, focus on politics & policy.
I just submitted a pre-tenure sabbatical application. If successful, I'll get one semester to solely focus on my research on various aspects of the policy process in China. Fingers crossed.🤞
First bike ride in over a month! 💚 I cruised around for hours, enjoying the beautiful flowers and sunny weather. I'm slowly recovering from the long lock-down here in Kunshan.
Took the Maglev from Pudong to Shanghai today. 🚄 A first time for me. This train runs on magnetic suspension. With a speed of 300km/hour, it took only about 7 minutes to get to the city.
I love Kunshan’s new bicycle infrastructure. I’m especially excited to see bicycle passageways that go under car roads, like the one in this picture. I hope the city will replace existing infrastructure with these types of solutions. This will make bicycling easy and safe.
Cite women. If you a reviewer or editor, review diversity in citations and encourage authors to cite women & other underrepresented groups. As author, please don't tell us that there is no relevant research done by women. Tips by

This was such a great day! Our very first batch of undergraduate students at DKU graduated. It is not easy to build a university from scratch, especially during a pandemic, but we did it. Congratulations to the class of 2022! 🎂🎓🥳
Dear conference organizers, pls keep in mind that not everyone can afford your conference fees. This is especially true for scholars based in the Global South. I'm in a privileged position myself, but many are not. Want to increase diversity? Lower conference fees. Thank you! 🙏

Treat women as equals. Do not refer to your male colleagues as dr. or prof. while using first names for your female colleagues. Correct colleagues who do this.
I'm enjoying Amsterdam. It's a big contrast with Kunshan in terms of pandemic measures and behavior. No face masks, no testing, no health codes, no travel restrictions.
Another day with magnificent views in Huangshan.🤩 I’m flipping through my pics while waiting at 1600m elevation for cable car down. The cable car unexpectedly closed for repair just now. It’s getting dark. Walking down takes about 3 hrs. Fingers crossed this won’t take too long.
Had a great week in Toronto at the

International Conference on Public Policy. I attended many presentations and especially enjoyed learning about latest in policymaking, the role of storytelling in public policy, and how different identities shape policy implementation.
I’m excited about my new Suzhou Citizen Card, which gives me free entrance to >100 tourist attractions in Jiangsu. If only I had time to visit all these interesting places... 😂
Hurrah! 🎉 International students are finally returning to our campus in Kunshan. I look forward to seeing you all in March, when I'll travel back to China.

Whether or not this is "normal" is open to discussion, but application fees for PhD programs are surely not global. There are no application fees for PhD positions in e.g., the Netherlands, Sweden, and probably many more countries.
Today I came across these mahjong chocolates in a gelato shop. I still remember the time when chocolate was difficult to find in China, but now one can buy pretty looking chocolate pralines even here in Kunshan.
Throwback to today 18 years ago. I was a student at Peking University. That day, I woke up to snow. ❄️ Beijing was beautiful! (until the snow turned black due to cars/traffic). I remember walking around for hours taking pictures, including this one.

Kunshan today: sunny, warm, blue sky. I took advantage of it by exploring the countryside. I biked 20 km along rice paddies and had tea, fresh local tangerines, and roasted sunflower seeds in a small village along the way. The day ended with a beautiful sunset. ❤️
Ran a 10km trail in the Netherlands today. 🏃♀️ The long lockdown situation in Kunshan has negatively impacted my speed & strength. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the race. Very green forest, nice views, and sunny weather. 💚

My thoughts are with this woman in Tangshan (China) who got beaten very severely by men on Friday. Lots of comments on Weibo under the hashtag #唐山女孩被暴力围殴是所有人的噩梦# Many people are saying that "it could have been me." Violence against women must stop.
The footage coming out of Tangshan today is horrific, every woman's worst nightmare.
Shocking footage is going viral of a woman refusing a man's advances at a restaurant.
She is then punched, chairs are thrown, & she is dragged by her hair into the street, JUST FOR SAYING NO.
