This is a very sick, bleached brain-coral on the reef flat at Heron Island, 2 weeks ago. It was the sole surviving colony of this species that I could find. The rest died when sea temperatures on the reef flat reached 34C.

If you look carefully, you’ll find ONE location across the vast southern Great Barrier Reef that is coloured blue It’s the only tiny spot where heat exposure didn’t exceed the 4 Degree Heating Weeks threshold that triggers coral bleaching. We’ve never seen bleaching like this.

It’s only mid-May, but sea temperatures in parts of the Caribbean are now exceeding the long-standing summer maximum. It’s already nearly 3C hotter than average. Mass coral bleaching and mortality in 2024 is already shaping up to rival or exceed 2023.
