An Australian ecosystem quietly slips away, due to anthropogenic heating. It makes me weep.
Without global action on greenhouse gas emissions, the
#GreatBarrierReef
will soon follow suit.
Reef restoration is a smokescreen, designed to buy more time for fossil fuels.
Unusually warm waters in the Caribbean Sea are fueling what some scientists say is the region’s worst episode of coral bleaching ever recorded.
Some ecologists worry this may be the start of a global bleaching event.
Today, 28 national academies of science: “Natural gas should no longer be considered as a transitional option. All electricity production & heating based on combustion literally fuels global warming, and must be replaced by renewables such as wind, solar, or hydro”
European Scientists on the Future of Gas: We must ban new natural gas boilers at once.
@EASACnews
new report “Future of Gas” highlights the extremely high global warming potential of largely unrecorded methane leakages along the whole natural gas supply chain.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and declare that mass bleaching of corals and die-offs of kelp during unprecedented hot summers is NOT caused by underwater arsonists or lack of controlled burning of forests.
A recent Newspoll has found most Australians – 56 per cent – believe the main cause of the recent devastating bushfires was hazard reduction with 35 per cent saying it was due to climate change.
In court today - the Australian government argued that they have NO duty of care to protect children from the impacts of climate change.
Your kids’ future well-being is less important to this government than new coal mines or more fossil gas.
A coral restoration project in Florida, now tragically destroyed by anthropogenic heating.
There is no cure for coral bleaching, only prevention - stop burning fossil fuels.
Memo to journalists: Please stop claiming that the clever scientists can re-grow coral reefs, despite escalating anthropogenic heating.
(Focus instead on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, curbing fossil fuels & land-clearing).

Memo to journalists who feel that a meteor hurtling towards Earth is an inappropriate metaphor for anthropogenic heating….
Please think again…..

I’m very honoured to receive the Sir John Maddox Prize tonight “for standing up for science”, and for promoting better governance of coral reefs in the face of anthropogenic global warming, in Australia and elsewhere. THANK YOU for your support!
“The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority last week released its latest reef health update with little fanfare, despite shocking figures about the scale of the event. There was no media release”.
No, The vast majority of Scientists do NOT support the dangerous Idea of deliberately geoengineering the planet
Here’s one of many science articles - on what could possibly go horribly wrong:
With the stroke of a pen, the endangered

Kicking the can down the road. Denying the scientific evidence.

Fourteen oil and gas companies including Shell, Occidental Petroleum, BP, Chevron and Halliburton, are funding a website that attacks climate scientists and undermines their work.
Premier Perrottet backs sentencing of Deanna “Violet” Coco. He says it is “pleasing to see” and warns others against taking part in protests that “inconvenience people”. “If protesters want to put our way of life at risk then they should have the book thrown at them.”
Scientists are people too. Watching coral reefs dwindle worldwide is emotionally draining - deep sorrow, frustration at the complacency, lies and inaction...and a touch of rage.
Terry Hughes marine biologist and winner of this year’s John Maddox Prize was close to tears when describing the devastation of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Nationals leader, Michael McCormack, declaring he is “not worried about what might happen in 30 years’ time”.
What is wrong with him? Why does he think this is a smart thing to say?
Sack the shortsighted lot of them. You can’t farm a dead earth.

Did anyone notice just ONE senior Australian politician taking ANY notice of the continuing rapid decline of our national icon , due to anthropogenic heating?
With the release of the next
#IPCC
report just two hours away, please set aside a moment to contemplate how humanity has already radically changed the face of our planet.
There is no planet B.
For the first time in recorded history, corals on the

No government Minister had acknowledged this milestone.
Not even an after-5pm Friday press release.
Silence.
This is a very sick, bleached brain-coral on the reef flat at Heron Island, 2 weeks ago.
It was the sole surviving colony of this species that I could find.
The rest died when sea temperatures on the reef flat reached 34C.
Scientists can re-seed THIS amount of the
#GreatBarrierReef
with 1 or 2 coral species, for about a million bucks a pop.
Or, we could leave fossil fuels in the ground.
I think about the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef every day.
Scientists have been documenting the decline for decades, but not enough people listened.
Our children and grandchildren have been robbed of their inheritance.
In Australia, you can bring a gallows to Parliament House, and the PM will understand your frustration.
If you try to block a coal train, you could end up in jail for 25 years.
Important Memo to journalists re Magical Recovery:
When a 10 year old wombat, 50 year old gum tree, or 100 year old coral dies - from climate extremes due to anthropogenic heating - THEY DO NOT RECOVER a few months later.
Has anyone actually seen a plastic straw underwater on the

Australia fires: coal industry causes long-term damage as bushfires cost businesses billions. Thermal coal mining employs 38,000 people in Australia. Tourism employs 924,000.
If you look carefully, you’ll find ONE location across the vast southern Great Barrier Reef that is coloured blue
It’s the only tiny spot where heat exposure didn’t exceed the 4 Degree Heating Weeks threshold that triggers coral bleaching.
We’ve never seen bleaching like this.
The 2024 mass coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef in numbers (preliminary analysis):
- 46% of reefs experienced record high DHW
- new record of 17.7 DHW from the southern GBR
- 37% of the GBR has been exposed to three or more >6DHW events in the past decade

We’re rapidly running out of time to save the world’s coral reefs from anthropogenic heating. A tragic update from Florida, whose Republican Governor refuses to acknowledge the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas pollution…..
Sad update from North Dry Rocks in Key Largo: On 8/28, we found all staghorn & elkhorn

severely bleached & dying. There are no longer any “winners” that have escaped, & I expect all will die in the next several weeks. I can’t believe they spawned just a few weeks ago 🥺
An aging marine biologist inspects a giant old coral that’s fighting for its life due to anthropogenic heating.
Surrounding it are stands of recently dead and dying staghorn corals, for as far as the eye can see.
This is what mass-mortality looks like.
The Great Barrier Reef is the size of 70 million football fields.
The total area of coral reef partially “restored” globally over the past 30 years is about 3-4 football fields, and it has cost a fortune.
Those photos of fires and smoke in CA, OR and WA are just shocking,
just like NSW, VIC, QLD, TAS,....
and Portugal, Greece, Siberia, Chile....
Almost like something global is underway.
This article is a disgrace,
@abcnews
, worthy of Murdoch’s propaganda.
How can you report on “shifting weather” without even mentioning the anthropogenic causes, or the imperative of reducing emissions?
#GreatBarrierReef
: More than half of the corals died on red reefs, in two consecutive summers with record-breaking heat.
The solution isn't building new coalmines, expanding fracking, underwater fans, or banning plastic straws. Cut emissions.
The Australian government has quietly released the map of mass coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef this summer, confirming that the 5th event in just 8 years is the most severe & the most widespread ever.
This time, only the far north has escaped.
“A record marine heatwave” is misleading language that normalises ongoing anthropogenic heating.
“worrying damage” doesn’t convey the loss of hundreds of millions of corals along 75% of the world’s largest coral reef system.
Please listen to the marine biologist….
Vision below the Great Barrier Reef has uncovered some worrying damage caused by a record marine heatwave. A marine biologist has labelled the bleaching event 18 metres below the surface the worst she's ever seen.

The Great Barrier Reef is suffering its worst mass bleaching and mortality event ever this year, due to anthropogenic heating.
And THIS is the Australian government’s response:
The Albanese government will today release a plan to ramp up gas extraction and use beyond 2050, in defiance of global calls to phase out fossil fuels.

Moving deckchairs on the Titanic, didn't "buy time" because the ship was doomed from the moment its hull was breached.
So can someone explain to me why Australia's promotion of coral reef restoration can "buy time", while anthropogenic heating, new coal & gas, remain unchecked?
On Thursday, Q+A is looking at our climate policy as international pressure mounts on Australia to lower emissions. Head to the

It will be scientists, not politicians, who come up with the solution to climate change, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has told assembled world leaders at COP26.
It’s only mid-May, but sea temperatures in parts of the Caribbean are now exceeding the long-standing summer maximum.
It’s already nearly 3C hotter than average.
Mass coral bleaching and mortality in 2024 is already shaping up to rival or exceed 2023.

Great Barrier Reef: As we leave summer behind, the 5th mass coral bleaching in 8 years has reached its climax.
Hundreds of millions of corals have already died. Now we wait to see the final toll over coming months.
