The work of David Card, Josh Angrist, Guido Imbens (and the late Alan Krueger) has not only provided economists with better tools to study causal relationships, but it has also generated many substantive insights on education, the labor market, and society. A well deserved prize!

The Journal of Economic Perspectives ⁦ @AEAjournals ⁩ features a symposium on the EU. Josef Zweimüller and I document that despite significant East-to-West migration, the European labor market remains much less integrated than that of the US.

I'm honored and humbled to win this year's Gossen Prize @VfS_econ and to join the impressive list of previous winners. Also very happy to bring it back to @econ_uzh 22 years after Ernst Fehr won it in 1999 (too big shoes for me to fill!).

Contrary to widespread perception, attitudes towards international trade have become more favorable again in recent years. However, few people realize that lower consumer prices are often one of trade‘s main benefits.

CONCLUSION: Losses from trade are concentrated among specific pockets of (less-educated) workers and in the geographic regions where they reside, while gains from trade are widely dispersed in the population. Trade has thus contributed to growing economic inequality 11/12

Sign up for the next public lecture of @URPP_Equality ! The political scientist @dziblatt will discuss how movements for more inclusion and openness trigger counter-movements that advocate political exclusion. How can democracies in Europe and North America cope with these trends?

In reality, workers are much less mobile. When factories in the US and EU closed due to rising Chinese import competition, their workers often failed to find other decent jobs. In the most affected geographic regions, employment and earnings remain depressed years later 7/12

What now? In the paper, we also summarize evidence on trade's impact on society and politics, and discuss policies to support globalization's losers. Despite anti-trade rhetoric in politics, public attitudes towards trade have become more favorable again in recent years 12/12

This year’s economic sciences laureate Claudia Goldin showed that female participation in the labour market did not have an upward trend over a 200 year period, but instead forms a U-shaped curve. The participation of married women decreased with the transition from an agrarian

Worldwide trade in goods expanded massively during the 1990s and 2000s. A growing share of trade originated from low-income countries and took place within global value chains, while trade imbalances between countries increased 2/12

What changed? Classic trade models predict that trade leads countries to specialize in specific industries, with workers smoothly transitioning from declining industries and regions to growing ones. The labor market adjusts through modest changes in national wage levels 6/12

Rapidly rising import competition from China impacted the labor markets in many high-income countries. However, only few countries were able to also substantially expand exports to China, and create new jobs in exporting sectors 8/12

An important benefit of Chinese imports are falling consumer prices (see figure). Further results of our analysis of UK prices show that richer and poorer consumers benefit equally from the price drop, consistent with recent results for the US 10/12

China's rapidly growing exports to the US and EU-15 substantially contributed to these patterns. In Europe, rising trade with the formerly communist Eastern bloc was also important, while improvements in IT and falling tariffs further facilitated trade 3/12
