"No amount of innovation can correct the cascading social and ecological harms wrought by decades of overshoot, whose solution we already know: a planned, thoughtful contraction of our population and consumption."
Our article in Newsweek is out today:
"In the end, alarmism about population decline is a distraction from the real crisis demanding attention: the human enterprise in overshoot, overwhelming the natural systems that enable life on Earth."

There are good reasons to adopt this diet. Preparing to feed 11 billion people not one of them. 11 billion will decimate ecosystems and exceed planetary boundaries. Stop looking for ways to feed 11 billion. Look for ways to never see 11 billion!

We need a food system that doesn’t cost the Earth. This diet promises to save lives, feed a growing population and protect and support our planet.

Those who silence discussions about overpopulation "are themselves carrying water for pronatalist and patriarchal forces that insist women’s primary and inarguable function is to bear children."

The excesses of the Anthropocene show the imperative of returning to a more ecocentric perspective, where our communities include the nonhuman web of life that surrounds us.

Reductionist arguments like this are extremely harmful in addressing what is one of the main drivers of unsustainable population growth - pronatalism - the pressures to procreate, which are far more pervasive & prevalent than any efforts to reduce births.
Pronatalism comes w/ its own alarmist vocabulary, where "women and couples choosing smaller families" becomes a crisis. With accelerating
#climate
change,
#biodiversity
loss, wealth
#inequality
, & automation, lowered fertility is to be celebrated
Our op-ed is out:
The idea that population growth drives environmental decline & human suffering, once considered common sense, is now demonized as “eugenicist” - harming not only the planet but women, children, and the most vulnerable people
Given the impact childbearing and parenting will have on every aspect of our lives, for the rest of our lives, shouldn't the decision be based on careful consideration of our own deepest desires & aptitudes?

We are setting ourselves up for failure with the widespread belief that we can simply "decarbonize" our current economy & way of life, and continue much as before. Our friend Dr. Bill Rees, father of ecological footprint analysis, tells it like it is.
Actually, no. We are trying to leave children a planet worth inheriting. We hope to avoid sentencing them to lives of misery on a devastated planet. We're supporting informed decisions - freely made. No control, just information.
Our LTE in

@StablePlanetAll
Shocking levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Clearly we can alleviate the pressure, by reducing the amount of meat we eat. But its also clear that overall meat consumption is rising with the number of people on the planet (400,000 people born every day).
The choice to have or to forgo children is a privilege. We must abolish the simple and archaic attitude of pregnancy and raising children = good, whilst choosing not to have children = bad.

Report, and as

The report "is wrong to dismiss 'population anxiety' as groundless & assert that 'population sizes are neither good nor bad.'"
@ClimateDad77
It is both. Those bottom 90% want the same comforts enjoyed by the wealthy; allowing them to control their fertility allows them to live in comfort without vastly increasing overshoot. Humans at lower emission levels have huge impacts on biodiversity, water, etc etc.
"The combined greenhouse gas emission of the richest 1% is more than twice of the poorest 50%"
The great fallacy of the "consumption, not
#population
" argument is the assumption that the poorest 50% want to remain that way.

This article in Down to Earth tries desperately to find the reasons behind drought in Madagascar.
What it fails to identify is that the human population of Madagascar doubled to 28 million in just 22 years. No wonder they have outstripped the supply.
Our impact on Earth, as a species, is wide ranging. The use of leaf blowers not only creates noise pollution, causing stress for your neighbors & wildlife; but blowing all those leaves away also disturbs vital habitat & the natural ecosystem.
When the water demands of your population become so large that you consider 'diverting the Great Lakes', surely it's time to consider that there may just be too many people, demanding too much?
This is very much needed in the fight against climate change: but we hope people don't get the impression it can be solved by technology alone. We also need to reduce consumption, by consuming less each & reducing the number of consumers (our population)
Throwing money at people to raise birth rates to provide a temporary fix to quality of life problems whose root cause is ecological collapse brought about by high birth rates
The US has pledged 9bn USD to “stop and reverse deforestation and land degradation” by 2030.
By 2030 we'll have added another half a billion human consumers to the Earth. It would be much more effective to put that money into family planning programmes.
The idea that ever more young people are needed to support the economy or the old is an unsustainable ponzi scheme.
Those young people grow old &, in a crazy growth model, require more young people to support them! On a finite planet, where does that end?
So many women and men know from an early age that they want to remain
#childfree
, and their desires to avoid the pain, risk, and consequences of a pregnancy are thwarted by pronatalism.
#Vasectomy
should be free and on demand.
While young people are often warned they may regret not having children, seldom do we hear how much we may regret having them.
