...he called and paid the outstanding bill, over a thousand dollars, then tore up the notice and threw it in the garbage. With no comment. He didn't know who the family was, he just helped a stranger. He's also Sikh, wears a Dastar, and gets constant grief from ignorant people.

A colleague from Puerto Rico visited relatives in the South last week and was detained by police because he couldn't produce a green card. He was released when the INS explained that Puerto Ricans are Americans. Apparently this happens often. Stupid maga cops.

In 1974, Nikolai Machulyak found a starving, abandoned polar bear cub and cared for her until she was large enough to live on her own. This photo was taken in 1976 when he encountered her again. She recognized him as her rescuer and showed off her cubs. He gave them some treats.

My Border Collies helped us stop a neighbor from committing suicide this weekend. I find it incredible how sensitive dogs are to something that's going wrong, even when it's at a house across the street. The neighbor is staying with us for a while now. I love my dogs.

The mom of one of my science camp students handed me a huge bag of fresh green onions when she picked up her son today, and tearfully thanked me for including him. Mexican immigrants (I taught the Spanish-speaking students), extremely smart son, and the best payment in years. 🙂

I walk seven Border Collies twice a day. I bike a lot to keep up cardio health. I do a lot of hiking in dangerous places. But how did I just sprain my ankle? I tripped on the floor inside my house. Flat, empty, rugless floor. My wife is laughing to tears right now.

President Biden stood his ground on the NDAA and got a 5.2% pay raise for members of the military, the largest in more than two decades. The House finally passed it, and it's expected to be approved quickly by the Senate. This is trickle-up economics... money where it matters.

This evening I felt my pockets and said, "oh darn, I've left my cell phone somewhere." My female border collie jumped up and ran around the house, sniffing everywhere, within a minute showed up with my cell phone in her mouth. I didn't train her to do this. Should I keep her??

GOOD MORNING! All six dogs woke me up at 2am, super upset. Went with dogs to front door. Strange sound outside. Border collie puppy with collar and leash tied to the porch railing. Seriously. I just... I have no words. Currently being inspected by the pack. My wife is angry.

Every morning, the gang runs back and forth chasing each other from one end of the house to the other for an hour. This morning we had all SIX border collies (and Cat) playing. Big Girl only waddled part of the way, but she was smiling! Such huge progress!

Before we adopted him, he had been beaten a number of times. He just sat and shivered, and he would yelp when we touched him. He healed a little crooked, and his left eye and ear don't work very well. But two years later, he's the most loving and loyal friend I've ever had.

This morning my wife and I had to leave the Border Collie Trio unattended for the first time since we adopted our new girl. Someone figured out how to work the fridge's ice dispenser and taught the other two, and now every square foot of the house is covered in ice cubes. Fun!!

Last year when I was wearing shorts my female Border Collie learned to sneak up behind me and stick her cold wet nose on my leg to make me jump. Great fun. For her. 10 times a day. My new girl is now doing that as well. Both of them. Taking turns. Oh joy.

An abused Border that was scheduled to be put down, and a little puppy that its owner didn't want... the two of them have bonded and are never more than a few feet apart now. And the way they play together makes everyone smile, including the other dogs. I'm blown away. (AI image)

Big Girl and Pup played for an hour after everyone else was exhausted, finally ending when both fell asleep on the cool kitchen tile floor, tongues hanging out, and Big Girl snoring loudly. I've never seen animals happier than these two today. What a nice day it has been.
