As part of the Asia launch press event, we made the design lab into a showroom of development history. My favorite are the playable prototypes: bootable Deck family tree from mid-2019 to now, from a couple of hand-built units onto gradual mass production.

New Linux gaming milestone: with the latest work from Josh Ashton, HDR can now be enabled for real games! Tested it tonight on my AMD desktop with Halo Infinite, Deep Rock Galactic, DEATH STRANDING DC. Very early and will still need some time to bake to be useful to most.

Oh man... story thread. We showed Steam Machines at GDC 2015, right? One of things we wanted to showcase was that you could make use of features current living room gaming systems weren't capable of at the time. So one of the segments was going to be a game running on a 120Hz TV.

There's no meaningful news in here, we've done that for years already and will continue to do so, like anyone in the business of maintaining graphics drivers. In the interest of curbing the vast amounts of speculation out there, game is Jedi Survivor.

The best part is that they (mostly) all still boot, serving as an exciting reminder of how far things have come since. This one has a Picasso APU, at about half of the GPU power of the final Deck. The flatter ergo was an interesting experiment and taught us a ton about comfort.

The "30 FPS target" refers to the floor of what we consider playable in our performance testing; games we've tested and shown have consistently met and exceeded that bar so far. There will also be an optional built-in FPS limiter to fine-tune perf vs. battery life.

I suspect they (half-assedly) patched it out because it never worked right in the first place. When using 120Hz they would underflow every ~20 minutes with a few seconds of black. I don't think it happened during any of the live press demos, it was just one of the short segments.

PC gaming and modding/gamemaking are two sides of the same coin - it's really important that someone can make a game on Deck and ship it to whoever they want without any third party deciding if it should be on the platform or not.

There's no difference in actual available CPU resources between game mode and desktop mode, but game mode has a tweak to expose the CPU as 8c/8t instead of 4c/8t. This lets several games pick 6 or 8 threads instead of 4, yielding big gains from SMT scaling.

Massive effort on various different sides of Proton development there. To name a few, @Themaister and @b_nieuwen for the vkd3d-proton and radv sides of ExecuteIndirect/DGC, Gofman for making the anticheat work, and @Guy15241 for the Shared Resources and MF work.
