@ERunswickBMA Not such a great example. If I were to believe that gay sex is a sin, which I don’t because I don’t believe in the concept of sin, I wouldn’t be discriminating against anyone by not having sex with men nor by publicly stating my belief, meaningless as it is.

Evidence that BMJ editorial decisions influenced by editor’s personal views about social politics. If this is true, & the email trail seems to show it, I can’t see how they can retain the confidence of the scientific community. BMJ should be drawing the obvious conclusion.

An economist that has never heard of Principles of Political Economy. I wonder if he has heard of Marshall, Jevons, Edgeworth? Do economists live in a perpetual present? I doubt many physicists read Clerk-Maxwell but most would be ashamed to say they had never heard of him.

@ERunswickBMA It’s not obvious to me that it is a core GC belief that folk can’t change gender. It is a core belief that they can’t change sex & it is a core belief that the concepts of sex & gender denote different things & also that conflating them leads to unproductive confusion.

We rely on the usual ways in which social norms are policed, including sanctions like shaming, calling out, challenging & internal senses of guilt. All social norms are broken from time to time. It doesn’t imply that a world without social norms is a

@FegzAndGegz @mara_yamauchi That was boorish & if I might say so, rather stereotypically male. Any actual arguments as to why females should be delighted that males who say they are women should appear in the female listed timings? I’ll settle for one or two clearly articulated ones.

A very perceptive comment. We know that locus of control is a very important psychological trait. Put that together with increasingly delayed entry into adult roles, household formation, stable partnership formation & parenting & you have the fertile soil for the “me project”.

I have enormous sympathy for the generations after mine - my £20k starting salary in 1996 was enough to get me a two bed flat in Zone 2 in London with a garden - that was my ‘reward’ for playing the game. What ‘rewards’ do we now offer? Little wonder that people take refuge in

@runthinkwrite The folk that pretend they are aliens & don’t understand how social norms are policed are so tedious aren’t they? Clear rules, norm of honesty, calling out those that obviously break rules, sense of shame. It’s how human societies work.

@KatyMontgomerie Sex in humans is the two developmental pathways coded for in our genes that, barring pathology, lead to organisms capable of producing one of only two types of gametes along with correlated physiological & anatomical variation. There’s the definition you say can’t be produced.

@bescofield @Witch_Of_The @benappel paradise or even possible. A photograph BTW gives no sense of whether this person would pass in real life where one can see, their height, hand size, shoulders, gait, pelvic angle. Women, the old fashioned sort, can read all of these things rather easily. They have to. Sometimes

@alicemydaughter @rejserin There certainly are people with a DSD. They are all either male or female. There is no 3rd sex. Sex is about potential function in sexual reproduction, which is how we Homo sapiens do it. There are only two roles. Making large gametes or small gametes. If you really believe there
