Ben Goodhue always - always - called me 'Mr. Stacey', never Phil. He was old school that way. A favorite memory: at the 2012 Beverly High football Super Bowl title banquet, the team's linemen lovingly chided him, their line coach, for his tough but effective ways. RIP, my friend.

The best thing about hockey community, from Pee-Wees to the pros, is that it's one giant family. That's what makes it so hard to lose someone like Travis Roy. He inspired millions with his speeches, including one of my (non-hockey playing) sons. RIP to a true legend of the sport.

After 42 distinguished seasons, the legendary Billy O'Neill is stepping down as head coach of the Salem State men's hockey team. O'Neill's teams went 626-436-76 during his tenure, with two Frozen Four appearances. He is one of just 2 hockey coaches in Div. 3 with 600 career wins.

Our hearts go out to the Cioffi family of Marblehead (formerly of Beverly) on the tragic passing of their beloved son, Sam Cioffi. The former Marblehead High hockey & lacrosse star had just set the new @SsuVikings men's lacrosse single season goal mark (55). Rest in peace, Sam.

Terribly saddened to hear of the passing of former @BHS_BoysHockey state champion Jake Straw overnight at his family's home. The goal scoring winger and animal lover was a big part of the Panthers' 2014 Division 2 state title team, and a great kid to boot. Rest in peace, Jake.

Not sure folks realize how remarkable this Super Bowl run for Salem High is. They endured some dark days following their 1999 SB win, going 61-163 between 2000 & Fall 2 2021 season with 4 winless seasons. Now they're 2 points shy of a perfect season & headed back to the Bowl.

It’s over: St. John’s Prep has won its second straight Division 1 Super Bowl crown with a 21-14 triumph over previously unbeaten Catholic Memorial. Deceiving final score as the Eagles (11-1) dominated the trenches and never trailed. They’ll bring the title back to Spring Street.

The student-organized protest over Northeastern Conference schools decision to move fall sports to the late Feb.-late April period, scheduled for noon Friday at Danvers High, is being moved to Danvers Town Hall. Expecting a huge turnout of students from many NEC schools there.

Former Bishop Fenwick star Jake Connolly of Salem helped his Ithaca Bombers complete a perfect regular season (10-0) today, defeating SUNY Cortland, 34-17, at Yankee a stadium in the 63rd annual Cortaca Jug game. A home NCAA playoff game should be in the cards next week.

BREAKING: Jim Pugh has announced he's stepping down as the head football coach at Hamilton-Wenham after 6 seasons. Pugh, who told his players the news this morning, went 38-23 with the Generals and won 3 CAL Baker titles. Including his time at Masconomet, he's 216-132 all-time.

Congrats to Lydia Runnals of Danvers High, winner of the 56th annual Salem News Student-Athlete Award. Three-sport star scored 1400 on her SATs and is the owner of the state championship winning goal for the @WeAreDanvers girls soccer team is the school's first winner since 1982.
