God bless you, Peter. What you've done to make this world a better place and more aware will never, ever be forgotten by those of us who loved you. Without a doubt, you are the strongest and bravest man many of us will ever know. Rest in peace, my friend.

@RedSox
reliever Joe Kelly in the house ... gets a HUGE ovation from the TD Garden crowd after his beanbrawl video vs. Yankees the other day is shown on Jumbotron. Because of course that just happened
Extremely saddened to report that our beloved and longtime sports correspondent, Jean DePlacido, passed away Sunday.
Jean was a North Shore sports icon for 40+ years, someone that everyone knew, loved, & respected.
Our deepest condolences go out to her family and many friends.
BREAKING: Meghan Duggan of Danvers, 33, who captained the U.S. Women's ice hockey team to a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics, has officially announced her retirement. A power forward, 'Megs' will go down as one of the greatest American players in her sport of all time.
David Pastrnak: signed through 2030-31
Charlie McAvoy: signed through 2029-30
Hampus Lindholm: signed through 2029-30
Pavel Zacha: signed through 2026-27
Brandon Carlo: signed through 2026-27
Charlie Coyle: signed through 2025-26
Ben Goodhue always - always - called me 'Mr. Stacey', never Phil. He was old school that way. A favorite memory: at the 2012 Beverly High football Super Bowl title banquet, the team's linemen lovingly chided him, their line coach, for his tough but effective ways. RIP, my friend.
He didn’t do this to be seen or congratulated, but
@SJP_Hockey
captain Jack Gilligan quietly gathered up sticks left outside the locker room by frustrated teammates following their season-ending OT loss & calmly brought them into the room.
You can’t teach excellent character.
The best thing about hockey community, from Pee-Wees to the pros, is that it's one giant family. That's what makes it so hard to lose someone like Travis Roy. He inspired millions with his speeches, including one of my (non-hockey playing) sons. RIP to a true legend of the sport.
Absolute best thing I heard from a family friend tonight during the Celebration of Life for
@PeteFrates3
at St. John’s Prep: “ALS is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease; I hope it will eventually be known as Pete Frates’ cure.”
@TeamFrateTrain
@stjohnsprep
Covered my first high school football game (Westwood at Ipswich) on September 15, 1990. That means today marks the start of my 34th year at The Salem News. Thousands of games covered, stories written and great people I’ve met along this wonderful journey. Thanks to you all.
After 42 distinguished seasons, the legendary Billy O'Neill is stepping down as head coach of the Salem State men's hockey team. O'Neill's teams went 626-436-76 during his tenure, with two Frozen Four appearances. He is one of just 2 hockey coaches in Div. 3 with 600 career wins.
It’s my 30th straight Thanksgiving Day working for The Salem News, and by my count it’s 46 Thanksgiving games I’ve attended since my first one in 1971. Thankful to have a job that I love and to be able to chronicle these players and teams for future generations to enjoy.
This weekend begins my 35th season of covering high school football at The Salem News.
From my first four years as a full-time correspondent to the last 27 as sports editor, I’m guessing I’ve covered somewhere north of 600 HS football games. Ready to add to that total in 2024.
Please take a minute today to remember the late, great Jean DePlacido today. We lost her exactly one year ago, and there isn't a single day that goes by that she isn't missed.
Our hearts go out to the Cioffi family of Marblehead (formerly of Beverly) on the tragic passing of their beloved son, Sam Cioffi. The former Marblehead High hockey & lacrosse star had just set the new
@SsuVikings
men's lacrosse single season goal mark (55). Rest in peace, Sam.
Deep down I think we all knew this was coming; you can't argue with Gov. Baker's decision. Safety for all is the No. 1 priority.
But my heart goes out to all of the spring student-athletes -- especially the seniors -- as well as coaches, fans, parents, ADs, etc. Heartbreaking.
Happy 34th birthday to the strongest man I know,
@PeteFrates3
. What you have done to change this world, Peter, and the untold lives you have changed in the process can never be measured. Fight on, brother!
Tonight marked the 39th & final high school boys hockey game of the season for me. That's 81 games covered the last 2 years, a true labor of love. Thanks to the players, coaches, fans, trainers & everyone connected to this wonderful sport for another great season.
@MassHSHockey
The 2022-23 high school sports season is now officially in the books.
Another 103 games covered in person as I wrap up Year 33 at The Salem News.
Time to let the engine cool (somewhat) this summer & rev up for another go 'round in 2023-24.
Thanks for following -- and reading.
Brian St. Pierre joins the legendary Jack Welch of Ipswich as the only two North Shore football coaches in history to take three teams to the Super Bowl ... and win all three.
As always,
@SJP_Hockey
makes room numerically during the National Anthem for late captains
@PeteFrates3
(No. 3) and
@DerekHinesFund
(No. 23), the only two retired numbers in program history.
Heartbreaking to hear of the passing of recent
@Mascohshockey
standout Brandon Lafata due to complications from diabetes. Extremely pleasant young man from a good family. Rest in peace, Brandon; I speak for the local hockey community when I say our prayers are with your family.
Been on the North Shore high school hockey beat for 25-plus years, and I'm geared up for another season starting Saturday at Bishop Fenwick (6 p.m.). Follow me all season for news, notes, stats, game coverage and, of course, The Blue Line Report. Let's drop the puck on 2018-19 🏒
Well, that's Year 33 of high school hockey in the books for me. Another 36 games seen in person this winter and caught some great individual & team performances, some milestone marks, and got some insightful interviews with players and coaches.
Thank you all for following along.
However you choose to spend your Memorial Day, please take a minute to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country -- such as 1st Lt. Derek Hines, the former
@SJP_Hockey
and
@WestPoint_USMA
hockey captain whose selfless courage has impacted thousands of lives.
BREAKING: Beverly High School has named Andy Scott, 35, as its new head varsity boys hockey coach. Scott, who takes over from interim head coach Jim Sasso, has spent the last 3 seasons as an assistant coach with
@BHS_BoysHockey
. He's also an assistant coach for
@BaseballBeverly
.
Your 2024 Division 3 state champion Marblehead Headers, who shock top ranked Nauset, 1-0.
One of the all l-time great title runs in state history for
@HeadersHockey
, going from a team that started 0-6 and 2-8 to the top of the mountaintop at 17-9-1.
Leo Burdge 30 saves.
It's over: behind a performance for the ages by senior captain Tommy Sarni (4 goals and an assist),
@SJP_Hockey
is your 2021-22 Division 1 state hockey champions, scoring the game's final five goals in a 6-2 rout over Xaverian.
Eagles finish at 22-3, most wins in school history.
Heading to St. John’s Prep today as it hosts long time rival Central Catholic (1:30 pm) in its home opener.
@StJohnsPrepFB
will also hold a pregame moment of silence for the late, great Jean DePlacido, our beloved sports correspondent who covered the Eagles for decades.
Looks like former
@StJohnsPrepFB
superstar and 2022 Salem News Player of the Year Joenel Aguero, a sophomore, will be starting at star (essentially a combination DB/OLB) for the top ranked University of Georgia Bulldogs Saturday when they open the season against No. 14 Clemson.
My 32nd consecutive season covering high school football, all at The Salem News, starts tonight. The music I hear played at games has (drastically) changed, but the passion, energy and electricity on these Friday nights and Saturday afternoons haven’t. Thanks for following along.
Terribly saddened to hear of the passing of former
@BHS_BoysHockey
state champion Jake Straw overnight at his family's home. The goal scoring winger and animal lover was a big part of the Panthers' 2014 Division 2 state title team, and a great kid to boot. Rest in peace, Jake.
Covered approximately 350 high school hockey games, 200 football games, 120 lacrosse games, 50-75 baseball games + 24 or so other events. Plus, 225-ish Bruins games, 3 Winter Classics + 3 Stanley Cup Finals.
Not a bad decade to cover sports on the North Shore.
See you in 2020.
Sad day in the Beverly sports community with the passing of LeRoy “Red” Hutt today at age 88. Athletic director, faculty manager, fundraiser, unabashed supporter of
@BeverlyPanthers
athletics ... everything Red did, he did without fanfare. Rest In Peace, my friend.
For the first time in 53 years, Dave Wilbur is not beginning a baseball season as a player or coach on the third Monday in March. Instead, the former
@BeverlyPanthers
coach came by our office to drop off a complete history of BHS baseball. Coaches retire, but class never does.
Lost in the hoopla of Sunday's 3-2 Division 1 state championship victory: it was the 250th win for head coach Kristian Hanson during his 17 seasons with
@SJP_Hockey
. He's now 250-96-44 with his alma mater, including 3 state titles, and 329-146-50 overall in his coaching career.
God bless you, Peter. What you've done to make this world a better place and more aware will never, ever be forgotten by those of us who loved you. Without a doubt, you are the strongest and bravest man many of us will ever know. Rest in peace, my friend.
Players from the Marblehead and Lynnfield football teams meet at midfield after tonight’s game to exchange hugs. Marblehead played with heavy hearts tonight after lineman Jake Scogland’s father passed away unexpectedly today. Our hearts go out to the Scogland family 💔
Trailing by 4 goals entering the 4th quarter, St. John’s Prep rips off 7 goals over the final 12 minutes to win its third straight Division 1 state championship over BC High, this one by a final score of 16-14.
Prep finishes its season at 22-2.
Phenomenal game.
BREAKING: Northeastern Conference principals voted today to bring Masconomet Regional into the league as its 12th team. Two weeks ago, NEC athletic directors had voted 9-2 in favor of allowing Masco in. Long discussed scenario going back more than 10 years will finally happen.
The assist man (
@sarni_thomas
) and the double OT scorer (Christian Rosa).
@SJP_Hockey
on to the Garden to face Xaverian for the Division 1 state championship Sunday.
Hearing that a few mayors of some Northeastern Conference cities have been in communication with school superintendents in an effort to restore the fall sports season in the NEC. There’s still time, folks ...
Herculean effort for
@PeteFrates3
, his family + medical staff to get all the things he needs to live gathered together, drive into Boston, make a quick appearance on the Garden ice + then head back to Bevtown. He's tougher than you or I will ever hope to be. God bless you Pete!
The
@SJP_Lacrosse
team since John Pynchon took over in 2017:
2017: 8-10
2018: 10-10
2019: 18-4 (reached Div. 1 North final)
2020: No season (COVID)
2021: 17-1 (Div. 1 state champions)
2022: 22-1 (Div. 1 state champions)
Total: 75-26
Last 3 seasons: 57-6, two state titles
It's over, and Marblehead finally has its long awaited first Super Bowl championship following a thrilling 35-28 Division 3 triumph over North Attleboro.
The Magicians finish 12-0, run their state-best winning streak to 20 games and will go down as the best squad in MHS history.
Make it four straight Division 1 state championships for St. John’s Prep as the top seeded Eagles (21-2) outlast Needham, 17-13.
Eagles with their 19th straight postseason game and have not lost one this decade.
A great observation from my man
@RichSlate
:
@stjohnsprep
now has alumni in Major League Baseball (Mike Yastrzemski), NFL (
@JohnnyGuapo381
), NHL (
@CB__43
) and NBA (
@pconnaughton
). That's absolutely amazing. Are there are any schools in Massachusetts that can boast this feat?
An amazing field of 17 candidates were interviewed today for our 62nd annual Salem News Student-Athlete Award. The judges and I were in awe of these amazing young men and women and their remarkable accomplishments.
Jake Vana of St. John's Prep was chosen as this year's winner.
Bishop Fenwick has named Scott Connolly - currently the athletic director at Salem High - as the new AD at Fenwick effective July 1.
Current AD David Woods will remain on as football coach & in an additional role supporting the school’s athletic program and advancing its mission.
Not sure folks realize how remarkable this Super Bowl run for Salem High is.
They endured some dark days following their 1999 SB win, going 61-163 between 2000 & Fall 2 2021 season with 4 winless seasons.
Now they're 2 points shy of a perfect season & headed back to the Bowl.
It’s over: St. John’s Prep has won its second straight Division 1 Super Bowl crown with a 21-14 triumph over previously unbeaten Catholic Memorial. Deceiving final score as the Eagles (11-1) dominated the trenches and never trailed. They’ll bring the title back to Spring Street.
Been covering🏈at The Salem News for 30 years now & I still get a kick of the pure joy + adulation on the faces of players, coaches + parents after a win such as Bishop Fenwick's tonight. You see how much work, preparation + sacrifice they all put in towards reaching this point.
Give it up for the Beverly baseball parents and fans. Gave head coach Dave Wilbur and his staff a prolonged and well deserved ovation, then did the same as each Panther player exited the field and walked through the stands. That's class AND perspective in high school sports.
I'm thrilled for the legend Rose Raymond on receiving the Agganis Foundation's David C. Weidner Media Award today. It honors a person who provides ongoing outstanding coverage & support of local sports and the Agganis Foundation in particular, and that suits Rosie to a T. 🌹📸
How psyched was the
@SJP_Hockey
hockey team to complete a late 3rd period comeback against top-seeded St. Mary's of Lynn, then win (3-2) in a nerve wracking shootout? Look at assistant coaches Dave Hennessey (left) + Scott Hentosh (arms raised) and you be the judge
@MassHSHockey
We so take it for granted, but let's face it: what the Patriots did today -- and have done for the last 17 seasons -- borders on the incredulous. Never before, never again in sports will we see a run like this. What a time to be alive.
#GoPats
If you haven’t watched this, you need to. Sportsmanship — pure, unscripted sportsman — at its finest. A ray of sunshine in these tumultuous times.
Also, DYK that
@Triton_Vikings
boys hoop coach Ted Schruender is the brother-on-law of former Danvers hockey coach Kevin Brown?
St. John’s Prep head lacrosse coach John Pynchon and his father, John, share a moment following the Eagles’ fourth consecutive Division 1 state title.
@SJP_Lacrosse
@sjpathletics
For those who (continually) piss and moan about the same 2 Catholic schools playing in the Division 1 final for the 3rd straight year, I say the absolutely full bleachers and rings of fans packed around the entire stadium — a crowd of 2,500 total — would say things are just fine.
Bishop Fenwick athletic director Scott Connolly will be inducted into the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame next month. An All-American defensive end in football as well as a wrestler for the Bombers, helping his gridiron squad to the NCAA semifinals as a junior and was team MVP
The
@SJP_Hockey
coaching staff — (L to R) Jeff Tache, Scott Hentosh, head coach Kristian Hanson and Dave Hennessey — coached in their 350th game in Sunday’s 6-1 win over BC High. In that time the Eagles are 217-92-41, including 33-16 in the playoffs.
@sjpathletics
It’s 1:34 AM and I’m leaving TD Garden for the last time this season. It’s been a long but thoroughly enjoyable ride. Thanks for following along throughout the regular season and especially the playoffs.
RIP to a good friend and an even better local sports journalist, Kevin Doyle. A Newburyport guy through and through, he was an absolute giant covering sports for the Newburyport Daily News for 2-plus decades. One tough Irishman who spent his life promoting others. Godspeed Kev ☘️
So incredibly happy for Meghan Duggan. She has literally worked 20 years for this moment — to call herself and her USA teammates gold medal champions. Congratulations

Very emotional scene postgame as
@CCRaider_BLax
faces its large fan section here at Glatz Field and is seranaded en masse with the school’s fight song. Tugged at the heartstrings as more than a few tears were shed from fans, players and coaches.

The student-organized protest over Northeastern Conference schools decision to move fall sports to the late Feb.-late April period, scheduled for noon Friday at Danvers High, is being moved to Danvers Town Hall. Expecting a huge turnout of students from many NEC schools there.
Never forget what the former
@SJP_Hockey
captain and 100-point scorer did in making the ultimate sacrifice for his country. God bless, 1st Lt. Derek Hines.
@stjohnsprep
Breaking: Bishop Fenwick is taking legal action against the MIAA in an attempt to give their student-athletes the chance to participate in the postseason. Here is a statement from the school:
First high school playoff hockey game I covered for The Salem News was in late February 1991. Tonight marks my 30th postseason covering what some people would say is the world’s greatest sport. So, for the 200th time or so, let’s do that (playoff) hockey.
@MassHSHockey
Honored — and humbled — to receive this at the
@DanversHSHockey
banquet tonight. Many thanks to the players, coaches, parents + administrators — who prove once again there’s no better place to cover sports than on the North Shore.
@MassHSHockey
I’ve probably been to our office 4 or 5 times total since this craziness began in mid-March, so seeing this in my mail pile during my most recent visit made my day. From both
@MattWilliams_SN
and I, thank you
@FhMasco
— champions on and off the field!
Former Bishop Fenwick star Jake Connolly of Salem helped his Ithaca Bombers complete a perfect regular season (10-0) today, defeating SUNY Cortland, 34-17, at Yankee a stadium in the 63rd annual Cortaca Jug game. A home NCAA playoff game should be in the cards next week.

. It's been a very challenging 6 months for us since we became a 2-man sports staff, but Willie continues to produce great sports stories day after day. A true North Shore Hall of Famer.
BREAKING: Jim Pugh has announced he's stepping down as the head football coach at Hamilton-Wenham after 6 seasons.
Pugh, who told his players the news this morning, went 38-23 with the Generals and won 3 CAL Baker titles.
Including his time at Masconomet, he's 216-132 all-time.
Congrats to Lydia Runnals of Danvers High, winner of the 56th annual Salem News Student-Athlete Award. Three-sport star scored 1400 on her SATs and is the owner of the state championship winning goal for the
