Professional Skating Development for Toronto Maple Leafs/OHL Barrie Colts/PWHL Barrie Sharks/Barrie AAA. Specialized skating techniques for players youth - pro.
Very excited to announce that I've joined the Toronto Maple Leafs player development team in a skating development role. It's a tremendous opportunity to be part of a leading-edge organization & collaborate with a staff that's at the forefront of player development!
#LeafsForever
A great exercise to help players unlock their upper body from their lower body is alternating fwd and bwd crossovers while keeping the puck on the forehand. Most players will turn everything with their feet but many movements on the ice benefit for this ability to separate. 1/2
I've had an unusually high number of players telling me coaches are instructing that arms should swing front to back during their stride and I can't take it anymore! Coaches please🙏don't perpetuate this myth, key to a quality stride is width with the arms! Not like running arms!
Should have been out here this morning for my usual private/semi private lessons but thanks to Ontario's punitive youth focused lockdown it is now "unsafe". Hopefully Ontario residents speak up and let our so called leaders know this is unacceptable treatment of our youth.

Hoping to dispel the myth of "C cuts" as a useful tool for backward acceleration. As shown here, players that embrace a launching technique that allows players to essentially turn while airborne will outperform old school "C cuts" that have been handed down for generations. 1/2
Here is a good look at how width of skating widens as a player transitions from the acceleration phase into the stride phase. Through the first 3 launches everything is as narrow as possible including narrower arm swing to match the narrow pattern from the feet with no glide. 1/2
Working on repeating outside edge C-steps with recent
@DetroitRedWings
draft pick Larry Keenan. This simple exercise addresses outside edge confidence, hip flexibility and upper body separation. Notice the upper body facing out of the circle throughout both fwd and bwd edges. 1/2
Great job by members of the U16
@BarrieAAAColts
earlier this week at
#DevelopmentNight
working on their acceleration and then applying it into a simple "strip and go" scenerio. Lots of great elements to highlight here that are shown throughout the sequence. 1/2
With the
#NHLdraft
approaching I think it's a good time to showcase the work that
@tfoerster8
of the
@OHLBarrieColts
has put in on his stride this summer to date. I've included some simple technical pics as well as a slo-mo video in the thread below to help explain all he's done:
Different audience for me today with over 30 open minded coaches learning how to implement an edge and balance skating component into their practice plans. Hope everyone enjoyed the information I presented and hope it helps your players build a better skating foundation. 🏒🥅👍
Some hesitation deception footwork development shown here from Shamar Moses of the
@OHLBarrieColts
. The ability to change your toe direction temporarily without reducing speed will tend to gain separation from a defending player that will slow down expecting a turn or a stop. 1/2
Puck placement through tight turns and escapes can make a huge difference to the skating of the turn as well as the overall puck control. Here's
@colebeaudoin11
from the
@OHLBarrieColts
showing how to touch the puck to the area where the skating can pick it back up cleanly. 1/2
Arc crossovers are the greatest weapon a player can use to achieve top speeds on the ice. Here we see how
@OHLBarrieColts
Bode Stewart creates power and launches across the ice off both his RFI and LFO edges. The knee and ankle flexion is key to create the spring like action. 1/3
More escape footwork today with
@OHLBarrieColts
, using blue line as barrier to get puck safely to the other side against a D gives players chance to experiment with timing & manipulation of D's speed & feet. Catching defender accelerating opens the door to play off his heels. 1/3
Worth pointing out Makar does use crossovers to defend here & uses them to effectively counter McDavid's crossover pattern. Many players come from situations where they're told NEVER to back crossover defensively but what a disadvantage that would be here given McDavid's speed...
I've referenced my Grandma a few times here, & players I work with have all heard about her strength but unfortunately after 99+ years she passed away this morning. Incredible lady that believed in sports & left a mark with everyone she met, the world is more empty without her 🙏
Refreshing to see that I'm not the only one to teach outside edges this way! Crossing over is easier but encourages rotation to help the outside edge which then becomes a crutch, get players to master outside edges using only lower body lean and they will be much better for it!👇
The ability to change speeds and accelerate from a gliding situation is a difficult skill for most players to master. Players that can cease gliding to spike their acceleration with blade grip and launch across the ice will stand out and win more races shift over shift. 1/2
Minor hockey coaching mission statement...if truly dedicated to individual player development encourage players to read situations & make decisions. Taking decision making away may reduce mistakes short term, but hurt long term development.

What a difference in stride positions from September to March by Luke Ellinas as he prepares for the 2022 OHL Draft. Credit to Luke for getting completely out of his comfort zone and putting himself in uncomfortable positions in a quest to improve his stride power.
#overhaul
👏👏
The ability to accelerate backwards without crossing feet has many applications both defensively and offensively but unfortunately it can be difficult and uncomfortable to do. Great job by Brody showing how to push off his left back outside edge repeatedly with no crossover. 1/2
What a difference a year makes when a player puts consistent week to week work in on his skating as shown here by
@colebeaudoin11
. Looking at his stride notice the new lower hip position shown in top pic vs the bottom pic taken a year ago as a rookie w/
@OHLBarrieColts
. 1/2
For all the players that have heard me reference my grandma before when challenging you to try something uncomfortable because my grandma wouldn't hesitate...well here she is turning 99 today. There's nothing this lady wouldn't try & succeed at. 99 & going strong!

Please read the statement below and share, this applies to so many sports that have been shut down not because of safety, but simply because it was easy for the government to do.

The following official statement has been issued by the Mariposa School of Skating in response to the Ontario Government’s Roadmap to Reopen released on May 20, 2021.
Has been a summer goal of
@Matt_Beleskey
to have more skating weapons & acceleration to get out of small areas & corners. Past few weeks have been his best demonstrating proficiency with a number of new deceptive skills & tactics. Biggest difference maker is the acceleration exit
When working on backwards crossovers it's helpful to apply some of the same concepts that players would go through with forward crossovers. In this challenge players attempt to make the crossovers much more linear by launching down the ice with minimal curve. 1/3
One of the most difficult things to do is acceleration straight ahead when already gliding. Great execution here from
@DuncanGrube92
as he shows how to instantly hit an "h" position and initiate launching across the ice eliminating all gliding during the acceleration phase. 1/2
Rare personal post, congratulations to the
@BarrieAAAColts
U14 team on our second
@HometownHockey
championship in the past 3 years! What a Sunday! 👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆
First session back after lockdown for this group of
@OHLHockey
players. Back to basics w/ foundational edge power to get everyone's balance aligned & on top of their edges. Doesn't matter age or level always good to recalibrate. Hopefully some games in the future for these guys🤞
Back to basics with foundational acceleration work today with
@OHLBarrieColts
, really good example of launching through first 3 steps with detailed touches of the ice here from
@beauakey
as he continues to add acceleration to his already strong arsenal of skating abilities. 1/2
Working with
@OHLBarrieColts
newcomer
@decmac25_
this morning getting his first step to cover ice efficiently. Really good look here at one of his repetitions, notice how the rapid extension from the right leg propels him across the ice for instant acceleration. 1/4
Great example of launch & ice coverage from isolated back crossover start from
@isaakphillips7
, notice slide of upper body weight (without shoulder drop) initiated by left inside edge then built on & multiplied by right outside edge. No "C" cuts just pure launch power
#NHLDraft
A goal for
@OHLBarrieColts
Riley Patterson at the beginning of the season was to improve his acceleration. As shown here in a stationary double crossover example, his ability to cover ice has improved significantly while maintaining an element of quickness through the steps. 1/2
This signing deserves more attention than most! Leeker didn't play AAA until U18 midget & attended multiple skating sessions per week the past few summers & spent extra time on his skating development in season sending videos from work on public ice as well.
#itsnotwhereyoustart
Combining "punch turns" with back inside edge delays can be an effective tool when there is enough separation from a pursuing player. The left outside edge changes the direction & speed then essentially executes a 3-turn allowing the player to face the pursuer & draw them in. 1/2
The myth that backward skating is for D only couldn't be farther from the truth. In many cases Fs should be using backwards in more offensive areas & D are using forward skating in more defensive situations. The need to be well rounded continues to grow as the game evolves... 👍
Backward
#skating
is an underrated technique that forwards can also benefit from tremendously. The ability to always face the play and be adaptable in all situations on the ice transforms a good
#hockey
player into a great hockey player. 💪🏻
Been working on upper body carriage keeping weight out of the shoulders with
@Matt_Beleskey
to improve launch & tempo of crossovers. Great results today after a couple weeks of detailed repetition, notice tempo & rhythm in real time, then ice coverage on each launch in slo mo. 👍
Great post below, especially in minor hockey it's misunderstood that becoming a better skater allows you to take on more players 1v1 when the reality is your skating should allow you to keep the puck safer and manipulate defenders not just for your advantage but your teammates 👍
KIDS: Every level you go up, the less likely you are to see a player try to beat a defender 1v1.
Why?
The higher the level you play, the less likely you are to beat a defender 1v1.
Defensemen are too good. They are faster, smarter, close quicker, and there’s less time and
Some extra technical work done on Friday morning with
@CooperMatthews_
and
@EthanCardwell2
of the
@OHLBarrieColts
focusing on "punch turns" or "cutbacks", specifically prioritizing balance through the turn and then maximizing acceleration on the exit. 🧵 1/6
What an ending to the season for this U12
@BarrieAAAColts
team. 2OT in both semis and finals to secure the
#RedHats
. This team's dedication to player development has paid huge dividends, great to see them rewarded with the season's ultimate prize! 1/2
✅Kids spaced out
✅Healthy physical activity
✅Healthy social camaraderie
✅Safely entered/exited facility
Last small group practice for this U11 AAA team tonight before the unnecessary artificial regional lockdown starts tomorrow.

#endthelockdown
I've posted a lot about the technical aspects of escape turns, here is a good example of working on the timing of when to use the turn. Notice how Summer waits for the defender to catch up and extend before executing her escape and then accelerating back up the boards. 1/3
An under appreciated skill for players to add to their skating is to keep elbows bent & flared away from their body while they skate without a puck. Cole here is on a medium sized arc of crossovers with shoulders level & arms in a great position to stabilize his balance. 1/3
Adding outside edge options to turning & transitions today with
@OHLBarrieColts
. Good look here at simple outside edge C-step sequence from
@beauakey
, notice how use of outside edges while turning allows him to maintain clockwise circle but upper body faces out of the curve. 1/2
First day of summer training for the pro/jr groups, right into it with some review of stride fundamentals then focusing on acceleration principles! 🚀
#nocomfortzones
#bettereveryweek
Re-watching Kendall Coyne Schofield's allstar performance today, the camera angles of her stride are perfect to illustrate how she uses arm swing for WIDTH!!! Still hoping to convert old school coaches that preach front to back running arms... 🙏

On the left is
@lucas_chiodo18
late 2016, on the right is Lucas today. Incredible difference in depth of stride position and power. Another player that is spending his holidays from the
@OHLBarrieColts
schedule working on details to be ready for after Christmas and it shows.
Working on zone entry pull ups/outside edge punch turns with
@OHLBarrieColts
today, slo-mo example here from
@tfoerster8
, notice the confidence in the RFO edge on the turn and the detailed placement of his upper body on top of that edge.
#bettereveryweek
"It starts in youth hockey. Sweden programs want to instill in the kids to make plays with the puck, skate, and to not hesitate. You can be creative or use your imagination to do things"
I'm always hoping more minor hockey coaches here will take this approach at every age/level.
Lastly, Tyson's biggest challenge has been removing the excessive shoulder rotation & torque from his stride & allowing his legs to take over. This video shows the now quieter shoulders with wider arm swing originating from the shoulders rather than shoulders initiating the arms.
While there is still work to be done on his stride along with gaining consistency of everything shown above, Tyson should be commended for his improvement over the past months. Stride can be one of the most difficult elements for players to change...👏👍
#GetBetterNotComfortable
Big improvement in lane change crossover pattern detail today from Kashawn Aitcheson of the
@OHLBarrieColts
, notice the slower "S" type pattern on the left vs the quicker toes up ice lateral movement with his crossovers on the right. Important detail for players to apply!👍
When working on crossovers it is a big benefit to the players to spend time on increasing radius circles as opposed to static sized circles. The advantage is learning to avoid constant full body leaning into circles & controlling curve radius with degrees of counter lean 1/2
Couple great camera angles to highlight how elite players accelerate. First clip shows Stutzle's ability to grip the ice and launch across the ice to instantly accelerate. No gliding until he reaches a speed after two grip steps that warrants glide and stride.
Launch➕Tempo=🚀
Huge believer in this, but it's become harder for kids to play multiple sports at a competitive level. Fall hockey tryouts mean more players are on ice more often in the summer. Tryouts this year for AAA hockey happening same week/nights as AAA baseball forcing kids to choose.

Thanks to
@GenePereira1
for taking the time to put this together, flattered that a skating coach’s story would be considered interesting enough to be put into an article. Looking forward to continuing helping the local skaters and players achieve their goals for years to come! 👍
Sometimes it's worth watching old videos to appreciate how much a player has improved, case in point here with Terry and her arm swing in particular. A couple years ago it was a major hindrance to her stride but has now become much more efficient & enhances her rhythm/power. 1/2
I truly believe that a player can can have the goal of playing in the NHL but the parent has to maintain the goal of enabling the player to improve. If the player improves the parent should then be proud of that success. Improvement is an attainable goal for every level of player
Kudos to
@_RyderMcIntyre
of
@StingHockey
for continuing to dedicate time & attention to his skating and for sending me some clips of his efforts. Players that put the work in during the season and not just the off season will maintain positive progression instead of regression!👍
Great view of Mikael showing the importance of ice coverage when working on acceleration. So many have been told to have "quick feet" but don't cover any ice with those quick feet. It's the combination of high frequency feet with ice coverage that equals elite acceleration.
Final Monday night of
@BarrieAAAColts
player development with the U16, U12, U18 and U13 teams. Worked on backwards skating D to D pass receptions followed by an "S" turn escape trying to step on a forward outside edge immediately from the backward inside edge.
#playerdevelopment
Some early season technical acceleration work with the
@OHLBarrieColts
, great example of blade grip and launch from
@MatthewSredl
here, acceleration on skates is all about the ability to get across the ice with sprinting technique, no need to glide until sprint speed is maxxed 🚀
If we are serious about promoting being multi sport athletes to our kids (and we should be), more thought needs to go into minor sports leagues and their seasons to help encourage and allow kids to try and compete in other sports.
#wellbalanced
"Multitasking" escape from
@MitchRussell_
of the
@OHLBattalion
transitioning from bwd to fwd, changing direction, & reducing circle radius all with one flip of feet & edges. Notice aggressive plant of RFO edge and steady counter lean on top to both reduce speed & radius, then 🚀
Hockey Canada completed a study which concluded that 1 quality run practice with many puck touches, game like, decision making, challenging and fun will equal up to eleven "regular" full ice games. Keep that study in mind when designing your practice to maximize development.
It doesn't happen all the time but what a bonus to step on the ice with a group of
@OHLHockey
players that I haven't seen since last summer to find that they've retained most of the basic principles of acceleration, and most noticeably the all important "h" position. 👏👏👏
Have had a number of teams calling and asking about Isaak, everyone likes his skating but despite that common opinion I actually think his skating is underrated by most scouts....plus it's still getting better...

#NHLdraft
“I want to be a guy on the ice that the other team notices, where they don’t want to dump the puck in your corner.”
@Sudbury_Wolves
defender Isaak Phillips (
@isaakphillips7
) made big strides as an

sophomore.
Summer Spotlight ☀️:
Here's a good slo-mo angle to help players see how blades should contact the ice when accelerating. Notice the narrowness & lack of glide while the front of the blade grips the ice & launches the player forward, never on two feet at the same time until stride speed is achieved.🚀
Good execution here from
@OHLBarrieColts
@nolannewton_
of an "S" transition where the edges are maintained the same while turning from forwards to backwards creating an "S" pattern on the ice. The weight shift and acceleration following the transition is also a key component. 1/2
A must listen...
The challenges are:
1. Most parents would rather watch games than skill development oriented practices
2. Most coaches would rather coach games than run skill development oriented practices
3. Success is measured by wins not players developed to next level
PRACTICE TO GAME RATIO
This is one of the things that is backwards in our country. Yes, you need to play. Yes, you can learn while playing…. But how many High School/College games do you see where players don’t know how to Space, Screen, Execute, Pass, Finish with Both
Must read for all those involved in youth sport...who else has noticed this?
"Her soccer coach is valiantly Zooming twice-weekly sessions focusing on ball skills; but without the social & actual “play” aspects, Noa has lost motivation & interest."
When working on using backwards skating and getting to the middle of the ice for dmen around the blue line area, it's important to apply the same acceleration techniques we would use for forward crossovers that emphasize launch off of edges and minimize extended glide. 1/4
Just wanted to draw attention to the
@BarrieAAAColts
that saw 3(!!!) players drafted during this
#NHLDraft
. What an accomplishment for the AAA organization to produce 3 players of this calibre as well as others who I know were on the radars of NHL scouts.

Outside C-step w/ back inside to fwd outside S-step exercise very well performed here by
@Carterr_2
, notice the smooth connection of all edges as well as his ability to connect every turn that finishes on an outside edge immediately with a crossover. Great upper body control! 👍
Huge thanks to
@Carterr_2
of the
@AttackOHL
for taking time out of his first day of holidays to be on the ice with the
@BarrieAAAColts
U10 team. Carter jumped in all the drills gave the kids a chance to play with an
@OHLHockey
player, if only they could AP him for next game...🏒
Thanks to
@CEMHOCKEY
for having me on the ice this weekend at development camp, great group of players that all embraced the skating challenges presented! Hopefully everyone is able to take something away that will help their upcoming season!
#skating
#nocomfortzones
Thanks to the coaches who took time to come to my 2nd annual clinic to assist in adding foundational skating to their practices. Great group that was willing to try the concepts themselves & hopefully feel comfortable enough now to watch their players and impart helpful feedback!
Introduced backward to forward escape footwork to the group during the
@SkateMariposa
Edge and Balance Program today, really nice example here from Finn showing how to flip from a backwards clockwise circle to a forward counter clockwise circle with maximum efficiency. 1/2
Large radius agility work by
@arturcholach
of
@OHLBarrieColts
, it's important to work different sized radiuses not just the face off circles that tend to be overused. Notice his upper body separation as his feet function independently creating his launch both fwds and bwds. 1/2
An edge & control exercise I like shown here by Declan, keeping upper body facing forward through the inside edge stop & flip helps the player gain independence of where the feet can aim vs upper body. Bonus opportunity to show acceleration launch restarting after each stop. 1/2
Travelling hours to play games isn't necessary, lots of ways to come up with competition within practices & within organizations, especially if we're willing to combine ages & group players based on skill not just birth year!
#thinkoutsidethebox
NTDP coach Seth Appert tells me the plan is to have the U17 and U18 kids back in Michigan on Sept. 1. Because development is key for NTDP, the game schedule can be altered if necessary but there is tons of value in practice/training
Great example of how to use all three types of crossovers to put a successful pattern together. Arc to get off the boards, lane change to get to the middle and linear to propel forwards 👏👏👏
#advancedpatterning
#practicetogameapplication
Also have to point out that once Makar has intersected McDavid's pattern as he attempts to attack the net, his open up pivot to go stick on puck is absolutely textbook. 📖
"We must get back to basics and teach kids proper skating technique before we place a stick in their hands."
I couldn't agree more and offer this advice to so many, but most choose to add sticks before the player can skate. Patience will pay off in the long run!
Working on catching passes while executing lane change crossovers with the U15
@BarrieAAAColts
during Barrie AAA Development Night. Nice execution here by Quinn who's able to present his backhand to receive the puck while crossing over changing lanes to outside dot line. 1/2
Shout out to a couple
@PetesOHLhockey
players
@joshkavanagh14
and Sam McCue for getting up at 4:30am this morning and making the 3 hour drive from Sudbury to Barrie to work on their skating. Showed up ready to go and got some great work done on both sessions. 💪

As part of the daily warmup edge and balance challenges we've been working on "rockers", great for helping players control upper body on top of lower body alternating rotation as well as being detailed with maintenance of an inside edge in this example from

scoring goals and both having great games! 🏒🥅🚨
Given this is the season of tryouts, I have a very cool story to share about Brodie (in the video below) so bear with me through a longer thread than normal. At the conclusion of the 2107-18 season after playing several years of "A" hockey, Brodie made the decision to take a...
Brodie w/ good example of backhand escape. Back crossovers flipping to LFO edge stopping/tight turn edge. Key is getting left toes to angle that instantly decreases speed & allows sudden direction change on smallest radius possible. Counter lean & crossover exit also critical..👍
