Yes the return of Buffalo makes me very happy but as much so does the return of swift foxes to the prairies. They, along with bison and prairie wolves and grizzlies, were wiped out in the late 1800s.

My mother, ca. 1955, after St. Michael’s Residential School she attended the School of Nursing in Humboldt. I sensed her independent spirit and desire to live free of constraints. Like many children of survivors, even though she raised me, I still feel I really didn’t know her.

The girl in this photo has been identified as Eunice Nimiqraqruaq Ochakpaut Nuliayuk. She grew up in Spence Bay (Taloyoak). She married in 1969. She died in 1972 in the tragic Martin Hartwell plane crash.

Another iconic ‘rocky mountain’ photo, ‘The Indian Madonna’ by Elliot Barnes, was taken near Maligne Lake, in what is now Jasper National Park, or on the Kootenay Plains. The woman is Gussie Abraham, the child’s name is lost. The Abraham’s were a well known Stoney Nakoda family.

As someone who has dealt with depression for years and two suicide attempts, last one with RCMP knocking on my door, don’t compare life situations nor suggest it’s a selfish act. It’s a dark hole that’s ever present. Always there. And yes, regardless of the light, it often wins.
