Devastating #GlassFire #ShadyFire #BoysenFire in Santa Rosa. We went through *exactly* the same thing with our family there 3 years ago in the Tubbs Fire. I’ve lived in CA my whole life. This so, so far from normal, and it’s not because we don’t take our forests.

A lot of hikers are applying for Mt Whitney permits now. They'll need to practice, and Mt Baldy is widely regarded as "training." If you're around LA and have your eyes set on Whitney, please stay away from Baldy or the San Gabriels high country now.

I've met people in L.A. who never hiked Baldy or even Mt. Wilson but have their sights set on Whitney or Shasta. Some free advice from an experienced (but not expert) hiker: Don't be one of those people.

@JozefColomy The Bobcat, El Dorado and Creek fires are all burning primarily on national forest (as in, federal government) land. But I do believe that lawmakers need to be more careful about building in populated areas adjacent to forests.

LA County vote center @LACountyRRCC at Doctors Hospital in East L.A. had a bit of a ruckus. Machines went down and at least one concerened watcher was raising his voice about provisional ballots. A lot of people got out of line, then the machines came back up.

Growing up in L.A., Mt. Wilson is where I started to learn about the area’s history beyond water theft and suburban expansion. It’s where, as a trail runner, I can take a welcome rest before venturing further into the rugged San Gabriels.

It’s where I can escape with my kids on hot days when the beaches are hopelessly crowded. It’s where we mingle with volunteer docents and who regale our kids with, in the same conversation, tales of celestial exploration and (yes) the golden age of hiking in L.A.

This is the Devil’s Backbone in June on the way down from Baldy. Imagine covered in ice maybe w/ snow cornices and 50 mph winds in winter. And this is the *easiest* route from the summit.

I think I've become so hardened to danger that I regard "close calls" as only near-crashes where I thought I might actually die. But if we're talking about every time I must take evasive action to avoid being hit, then yeah, I have close calls all the time.

I love when people say I'm making up my stories about close calls with drivers because I have so many of them. I'm not making them up; I just walk and bike a lot. This is what life is like when you primarily get around a city outside of a car.
