Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it’ll keep the clickbait sites busy!)

But mocking them online and calling them names? These are good people in a bad situation under a kind of stress that you can’t begin to appreciate from the comfort of your couch.

Good-natured laughter is one thing. Heck, they laughed at themselves. But, hey, cut them some slack. Unless you’re there, you have no idea how different it is in the studio.

And, of course, when it’s solved, you want to crawl in a hole. I’ve been praised online for “keeping it together” and not making fun of the players. Truth is, all I want to do is help to get them through it and convince them that those things happen even to very bright people.

Now imagine you’re on national TV, and you’re suddenly thrown a curve and you begin getting worried about looking stupid, and if the feather isn’t in your hat, where the heck can it be? You start flailing away looking for alternatives rather than synonyms for “hat.”

The first attempted solve was “Feather in your hat” which, by the way, is how a lot of people say it. So all three players thought it was a good solve, and were stunned when I said it was wrong.

Last night’s “Feather in your cap” puzzle was a case in point. Sitting at home, it seems incredible that they couldn’t solve it, but I knew in real time what was happening.

Merv Griffin, the creator of “Wheel of Fortune,” was born on this date in 1925. I owe the man so much. He absolutely defied network executives by insisting on hiring an unknown local TV weatherman to take over his show in 1981. That was me, and I’ve been grateful ever since.

So sorry to learn that contestant co-producer Jackie Lamatis has left our show after more than 30 years. She’s a dear friend, and her work with our players was absolutely amazing. She will be sorely missed, but I know a lot of good things and happy times lie ahead.

Sad to say that Wheel’s director, Bob Ennis, will be leaving the show after this season. Bob’s been with us since 1983 & has been our director since 2015. His calm, steady leadership is just what we needed. I wish him and his wife, Alex, many happy and healthy retirement years.

@briandarby I’ve contributed a few over the years (among them the toss-ups and getting Jim on camera) but for the most part, our EP and creative team do everything internally.

@ArmadilloAl @SunsetRoadzter That was used during an April Fools show where Alex and I switched places. I played against Vanna and my wife, Lesly, took care of the letters.

@briandarby I think the balance is pretty good. We want our players to win, but, obviously you need the risk factor. There’s no thought about increasing it right now.

@giraffe_boy The rule has since been changed. (And there has been a tie since then.)
