"Good works are necessary for final justification" is not true in this universe or the next because "God justifies the UNGODLY" (Romans 4:5). Mark and avoid.
Best part of my day? Hearing a teary-eyed senior saint tell me that he has never loved God as he should and to comfort him with the gospel of Christ who has.
If final justification is dependent on something thing we have to complete, it is not possible to enjoy assurance of salvation. For then final justification is contingent and uncertain. How can anyone be sure he or she has done enough?
Sinclair Ferguson. In Christ Alone
He is our Savior, not because He has inspired us to live the same kind of life that He lived, but because He took upon Himself the dreadful guilt of our sins and bore it instead of us on the cross.
Machen, Christianity and Liberalism
To reject Federal Theology, that is, Adam and Christ’s representative roles in redemptive history as Paul explains in Romans 5, is not merely to disagree with Covenant Theology but ultimately the clear teaching of Scripture.
If you are a pastor and do not know the difference between the law and the gospel, I WILL LITERALLY PAY YOU TO DO YARDWORK Until you learn. Otherwise, please sell insurance.
God has, does, and always will require absolute perfect obedience to His law. Therefore the one and only way that I can have assurance before Him is through the work of Jesus.
“He has not merely paid the penalty of Adam’s first sin, and the penalty of the sins which we individually have committed, but also He has positively merited for us eternal life" Machen
"We need not try to be a bunch of second Adams, performing Adam’s cultural labors in order to attain the world-to-come. Jesus accomplished Adam’s task once and for all, and did it for us"
VanDrunen, Living in God's Two Kingdoms
According to Machen, the Judaizers affirmed that Jesus existed, lived, died, and rose again. Yet they taught that sinners must believe and OBEY in order to be justified. Welcome to 2023 conservative evangelicalism.
"...creeds and confessions are, in fact, necessary for the well-being of the church, and...churches that claim not to have them place themselves at a permanent disadvantage..."
Trueman, The Creedal Imperative
