Olivier Award-winning makers of new plays by new writers. Our opportunities are free. All you need is a story. Now: Some Demon
@arcolatheatre
&
@bristololdvic
It’s get-in
@arcolatheatre
for 2023
#PapatangoPrize
winner SOME DEMON by Laura Waldren. As we open this world premiere by a debut writer, we thought it might be useful to be transparent about what this show takes. The £££, the timeline, the risks, all of it.
So, here goes...
We won the
#OlivierAward
for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre.
10 years ago we were a scratch start-up, with no funding and no private income, working multiple jobs to pay rent and somehow make tiny (but brilliant) shows to support writers. What a journey.
This is a horrible time, especially for those worried about loved ones or struggling in isolation. Our West End premiere's next month, and we fear the financial and artistic impact.
BUT we all need to help each other. This is a package of things we can offer immediately. THREAD.
We’ll pick 10 and pay £100 for each.
Then we’ll cast 10 actors to self-film these for £100 each.
The films will be shared online for free so everyone, wherever they are, can enjoy new writing.
Use this link: to share your monologue by midnight, 31 March.
1. Isolated But Open Commissions
Self-isolating or losing the theatre tribe is tough, including for being creative.
So we’ve set aside £2000 to support 20 artists to create despite coronavirus.
We invite you to pen a monologue(s) of up to 5 minutes (2 – 4 pages) on any topic.
We're delighted to publish our five-point roadmap for creating five-point roadmaps.
1) Take three months. This is vital.
2) Preening interview in old mate's newspaper.
3) Mess around with bullet point symbols in Word.
4) Any old nonsense.
5) Congratulate self. No one else will.
We believe that transparency is key, especially in difficult times. So, shared in the spirit of solidarity: we made our first bid for
#NPO
and didn't get it. The letter said we were rated strongly on outcomes but turned down because we aren't in a Levelling Up For Culture Place.
We waited until it was past noon to announce the amazing number of entries to
#IsolatedButOpen
, just in case anyone thought it must be an April Fool.
We received a staggering 2063 monologues! Thank you to all the writers who have been inspired to create in these tricky times!

This tender, honest story about three teenagers in a young offenders' institution, facing up to parenthood, blew our readers away.
A few people have reached out, seeing we didn't get a CRF grant, to ask if we're OK. That's very kind but please don't worry (if you were) - we didn't apply!
We're in a secure position (for now), so didn't want to bid for funds others might need more. So all is fine at our end!
We're excited for the Sky Arts Awards today, and especially to cheering on
@samueldbailey

Samuel's nominated for The Times Breakthrough Award for his

Financial pressure is undeniable. We've not had ACE subsidy for a production since 2021. We've no core funding. Audience numbers are still down.
Yet we've just announced two major commitments to new writers. When the old money runs out is exactly the time to try something new.
.
@Hamps_Theatre
,
@youngvictheatre
, and
@royalcourt
have warned of "devastating" pressures on their finances, as changing audience patterns, rising costs and funding cuts deplete their reserves and force them to adopt more cautious programming strategies.
We'll soon release the film of

We're so pumped for the first film capture of a
#PapatangoPrize
winner!
We're so excited for the
#OlivierAwards
today. We first started working on Old Bridge way back in May 2020 and at times it felt like we’d never get to open. The production was such a team effort and we were so lucky to have such an incredible team to work with.
2. Papatango Library
We’ve got a bookshop. In normal times, we sell plays dirt cheap to fund our free playwriting workshops in state schools.
Now, with many people facing self-isolation and/or worried about finances, we will create a free, mobile library of brilliant new plays.
We’re thrilled to share our 2021 season! We rebuild from the pandemic with our biggest-ever programme of open-entry opportunities, free resources, and world premieres.
Now, more than ever, we believe our motto should hold true. All you need is a story.
So, 2021 will see…
We've been a bit quiet on here lately. Please be assured, that doesn't mean we aren't beavering away on reading, planning, casting etc; rather, it means we're so busy doing that we haven't time to tweet!
We'll be in touch with
#PapatangoPrize
and

news very soon.

It's inspiring and reassuring to know that, despite everything, stories are still being told. We're also very touched by the appetite for the remodelled Prize!
Just tweet us with

Such a joy to be telling stories again, especially after the West End transfer was lost.
New writing is in peril.
Cuts to London infrastructure disproportionately hit new work, because a London-centric press/industry are often key to impact.
Plus, because unknown stories/artists are often a harder sell, especially in a financial crisis, funding matters even more.
Hampstead Theatre (
