The attempt to change the pan flag (and the subsequent harassment of the creator) has been going on for a year now. It started with outright lies about the flag and creator (baseless accusations of transphobia and theft), and then moved on to plain old exclusionism.
There's a "new pan flag" that was created and promoted in bad faith by non-pan people, has problematic meanings, and is being repromoted due to the original pan flag creator *not* being an exclusionist.
So, for the record, this account only recognizes and accepts this pan flag.
For any pan, aspec, non-binary, and intersex folks who need to hear it:
You aren't taking space that doesn't belong to you.
You aren't hurting, erasing, or invalidating anyone.
You're meant to be exactly who you are.
You're meant to be here.
You're okay.
To spread some pan love and visibility during Pride Month, I'm going to post a pansexual quote a day, all from the '70s to the '90s!
#Pride
πππ
To be clear: pan flags created by pans for personal use, fun, aesthetics, or to incorporate other identities are supported here!
Pan flags created by non-pans and/or to replace the original due to lies and exclusionist rhetoric that fuel transphobia and panphobia are not.
"New" pan flags are rooted in hateful lies, panphobia, exclusionism, and harassment. Some were made by people who aren't pan. Some were given transphobic and panphobic meanings. Almost all are nearly identical to the flag they so desperately want to move away from.
The most popular "new" pan flag is the green/yellow/orange one, which stresses that pan is only attraction regardless of gender, erasing the fact that pan is also defined as attraction to all genders. Y'all would rather a panphobic pan flag, than one created by an inclusionist?
Wishing everyone who identifies with being pan in some way has a lovely pride month and celebrates their pan identity in whatever ways they feel comfortable and safe. I see and love y'all, this month and always. ππππ
Before using a new pan flag, learn who made it and why. All of these new pan flags popping up have been created or inspired by a group of non-pan people who have been harassing the original pan flag creator over blatant lies and for not being an exclusionist.
Reminder: pansexuality is defined by the pan community and queer organizations as "attraction to all genders and/or attraction regardless of gender" πππ
Ever wondered what's left out of those "pansexual history" posts/articles (looking at you Medium) written by panphobes who clearly just want you to be a panphobe, too, so they paint an entirely negative picture of pan history? Well, here you go!
The original pan flag has existed for over a decade without issue. It's not okay for a group of people who change their flag so often that people rarely know what it is trying to do the same to the pan flag by suddenly creating new ones for us every other month over non-issues.
Friendly reminder: if a character has been confirmed as both bisexual and pansexual by those involved with the character, then they're both and that's okay! It doesn't have to be one or the other!
Stop treating bi as the default (or only) mspec identity. Stop assuming mspec characters are automatically bi until stated otherwise. Stop erasing pan, ply, omni, and other mspec identities.
Pansexuals, repeat after me:
π I am queer enough
π I am not harming anyone by being pansexual
π I donβt owe anyone an explanation of pansexuality
π I deserve respect and acceptance
π I am a valued part of the queer community
π I am allowed to take pride in my pansexuality
Pan is such a lovely label. Being pan is honestly wonderful. I truly love being pan. And so should all pan people. You have every right to be proud of who you are, don't let anyone steal that. πππ
Pan is attraction to people of all gender identities/lack thereof. It can mean, more specifically, attraction not determined by gender identity/lack thereof. It doesn't other or invalidate trans people or imply bi is binary. It does not mean "hearts not parts" or "gender-blind".
The validity of pansexuality is not up for debate. It's real and it's valid and it does not harm or affect anyone. Accept that pansexuality is not and was never the horrible, offensive, bigoted identity you so badly want it to be and just let pan people live.
The Bisexual Manifesto doesn't invalidate pansexuality, it does however explicitly support all mspec people, regardless of labels, and was published in a magazine that explicitly supports non-bi mspec labels, using multiple mspec labels, bi dykes, and bi gays.
Pan is not, and was not created to be a bi replacement or upgrade. It originally served as a sort of safe space for trans and non-binary people, in response to the real transphobia in the bi community at the time. Trans and non-binary people who were there for it have said this.
Here's a little lovely reminder to all you pansexual, panromantic, and otherwise pan folks (and allies) that May 24th is Pan Visibility Day! πππ
A quote from Bisexual Politics (1995) about how newer terms and identities, such as omnisexual, pansexual, and polysexual, suggest an expanding consciousness regarding sexuality; the limitations of language and existing terms don't encompass the full scope of our sexuality.
respect how people self-identify and resist the urge to assign bad faith assumptions onto why they identify the way they do. pansexual is good πππ bisexual is good πππ
july 14th is international nonbinary people's day so shoutout to pan nonbinary folks! y'all are so lovely and deserving of respect and recognition and support! ππ€ππ€ πππ
Freud did not create pansexuality. His concept, pansexualism, is not the same as pansexuality. It wasn't even a sexuality. It was a theory about human behavior. Stop associating pansexuality with him or using him to invalidate pansexuality.
Been seeing people talk about What We Do in the Shadows lately, so here's a reminder that Paul Simms (executive producer, co-showrunner, and writer) has said all of the characters are pansexual.
"All of our characters are completely pansexual."
Happy
#PanVisibilityDay
!!! πππ I hope all pan folks are having a good day and being treated well, today and always. Days like this are a perfect opportunity to learn about pansexuality, so here are some basics, and you can learn even more here:
happy
#bivisibilityday
and
#biweek
to all the bi folks out there, as well as all the mspec folks who might not necessarily identify as bi but consider themselves part of the bi umbrella/community!!! y'all are wonderful and i hope you're having a lovely day!!!πππ
How individual pan people explain their attraction varies. Offensive or ignorant explanations do not represent the entire pan community or identity as a whole. Making generalizations about an entire community and identity based on the words of a few is not fair or okay.
"Pansexuals and omnisexuals have always had more prominent and favored voices than bisexuals."
I'm torn between anger about this blatant lie and erasure of pan, omni, and non-bi mspec invisibility/erasure/silencing and embarrassment for the teenagers confidently saying this.
Since people have been sharing these tweets due to another "new" pan flag being spread around, here's the thread from the original pan flag creator about its creation, as well as the months of baseless claims against them:
Another response to that transphobia was to change the narrative in the bi community. That transphobia being largely corrected does not then render pan unnecessary, as it has its own history and importance to people that can't be thrown away or dismissed.
For
#PanWeek
this year, I made sort of mock magazine covers of pansexual characters with quotes from the actors, writers, creators, etc.
What better way to start the week than with the pansexual icon David Rose?
Shoutout to folks who identify as only pan or only bi and folks who identify as both who love/support each other and know that labels/identity is only ever personal, they are not erasing/threatening each other, and solidarity doesn't mean forcing one way of self-identification.
The bisexual umbrella should be an option for those who want or need it, and the bi community's history of welcoming and accepting all mspec people should be respected and upheld, but the bi umbrella shouldn't be a universal or required understanding of one's own mspec identity.
Pansexual celebrities being biphobic are not representative of the pansexual community, and their biphobia does not justify panphobia.
Just like any other queer celebrities being queerphobic only represent themselves and doesn't justify being queerphobic about their identity.
Will panphobes ever stop projecting their own issues onto us? WE live in an echo chamber?? WE need to talk to queer people "irl"?? WE are making our identity our personality?? WE should feel bad about the "damage we're causing"?? Us???? Pan people?????? Give me a break lmao
Shoutout to all the pan people who have come out recently. Whether you came out to your friends, family, peers, coworkers, etc., or you came out to yourself. That's incredible. I'm proud of you, and you should be, too. πππ
Someone on Reddit summarized my pansexual timeline and said "Pan history is badass. I love the layered connotations of kink positivity, glittery glam rock splendor, and sexual anarchism." and I think that's beautiful.
This is your tired reminder that pansexuality is not rooted in biphobia or transphobia. The existence of pansexuality hurts no one. Pansexual/romantic people are valid members of the community and deserve respect and support.
Identifying as bi before realizing you're pan is okay.
Identifying as pan before realizing you're bi is okay.
Identifying as both pan and bi is okay.
Your journey, identity, and label(s) are yours alone and not panphobic or biphobic.
Panphobic tweets get hundreds and thousands of retweets/likes and endless replies/QRTs agreeing, with barely anyone calling it out. When are queer people going to show up for pansexuals? This shit is exhausting.
Pansexual characters that have stayed with me, are favorites, or I think about often; a thread ππππ³οΈβπ
Feel free to share what queer characters have made an impact on you!
pan week is a great time to learn about pansexual people's health and wellbeing, so here are some statistics on the suicidality of pansexual people, from 2017-2022. for more sources on pansexual statistics:
People often invalidate and throw some pan people under the bus when they try to explain the difference between pansexuality and bisexuality...
So, this is a thread.
Non-bi mspec people have been getting accused of invading the bisexual community, so this is a thread on the history of the bi community accepting/including alternative ways of labeling (or not labeling) mspec identity, dating back to the '80s.
How is anyone *still* arguing that pansexuality was created in the 2000s or on Tumblr, as if that claim isn't easily disproven with even the barest of research? π€‘π€‘
Sourced timeline of pansexual history that gets erased, from the early 1900s to 2020. It also includes the bisexual community's history of including alternative mspec labels.
I've been asked a lot and I see a lot of people wondering about the pan flag, so here's a blog post that details the situation from when it started a year ago.
Spoiler alert: there's nothing queerphobic or problematic about the pan flag or creator.
Reminders:
- pan and bi are valid, legitimate identities that don't mean the same thing
- pan is not anti-bi or anti-trans
- bi is not anti-pan or anti-trans
- PAN AND BI PEOPLE ARE NOT AGAINST EACH OTHER
- invalidating one in the name of the other isn't helpful...or a good look
The replies are so hateful. Ableism, equating pansexuality to pedophilia/grooming, "not like other bisexuals," "sick ideology," sexualization, blaming pansexuality for homophobia, "gender identity cult," dehumanization, TERFs. And not a peep from the community about it. Typical.
To all our pansexual and panromantic family: You are seen. You are heard. You are valued. You are loved. πππ
Thank you for making our community even more beautiful and unique.
#PansexualVisibilityDay
Pan Reminders:
- attraction to all genders
- attraction not determined by gender
- different from bi
- not trans/biphobic
- people who identify as pan and bi exist
- trans and enby pans exist
- not a new sexuality
- hate will not make it any less real/valid
- panphobes can choke
Pan people who don't want to be called bi or included in bi get called biphobic for "thinking it's bad to be associated with bi".
Pan people who want to be included in bi get called biphobic for "invading bi spaces" and "making bi things about themselves".
We can't win.
Knew this was coming. Freud's pansexualism is not the same as pansexuality, which is what was being discussed.
I'm really going to need y'all to understand how classically homophobic it is to insist on equating a sexuality to a theory that was part of treating mental disorders.
Pride Month seems like the perfect time to start sharing my pan content on medium. First post is an abridged version of the pansexual timeline!
Learn some pansexual history and have a happy pride! ππππ
Happy Pan Visibility Day! Here are some things to know:
- Pansexual/romantic is attraction to people of all gender identities/lack thereof.
- How pan people experience that attraction (equally, preferences, not determined by gender, etc.) varies.
- Pan is not a new identity!
Reminder: an mspec person's self-identification has nothing to do with anyone else, and all forms of mspec self-identification (including similar labels, new/less known labels, multiple labels, and no labels) are good and necessary and valuable and do not hurt other mspec folks.
