“God will not ask you, “why did you sin?” But He will ask you, “why did you not repent?”
-Coptic Pope Shenouda III quoting an unnamed saint.
Blessed beginning of the Dormition Fast!
After moving to L.A. I’m realizing my coffee shop/bar evangelization process seems to be universal:
- I become a regular.
- A barista/bartender boasts of their relationship with me “a priest” to their Catholic parents/grandparents.
-They all come to a Theology on Tap.
Some of my brother priests and I will be doing both public and private penance for the evils committed by our fellow clergy. Any suggestions for penances that would be effective and helpful?
@RiotMary9811
Great question. All nuns are called “Mother” at life profession just like all monks are called “Father”. They are mother and father to the whole church.
Airport-bar evangelization update: guy “understands my point” about organized religion not being inherently evil, the Catholic Church not being a purveyor of guilt, and celibacy being a supernatural call. He’s sending me a bottle of small-batch bourbon he made. Spirit was here!
Dearest Denver,
My bishop is sending me to LA to shepherd our parish in Sherman Oaks, CA. I’m both heartbroken and excited. My 14 years here we’re so immensely joyful and life-giving. I’ll be leaving the last week of August. Going-away party info below...
Accidental Renaissance! I had to dig up an old photo to share that both Mother Natalia and I will be podcasting live at
#SEEK24
this January. We’ll announce the date and time when we know. Anyone else coming?
I was strolling towards the beach when I was suddenly surrounded by a surging mass of humanity sprinting and very anxious about something. They weren’t running from anything, they were running to the sunset, afraid they would miss it. I love how childlike we can be sometimes
@jdflynn
Aww thanks for throwing in “Byzantine”. I feel like a kid named Methodius who after years of searching finally found a little mini license plate with his name on it at a tourist stop in Pueblo.
@TheHappyPriest
Thanks for understanding and supporting our Church and kiddos. I just gave First Holy Communion to my three week old nephew a couple hours ago.
Elizabeth of

created an amazing film about Mother Natalia’s discernment and life profession. It premiered this past weekend at

. I’ll share the news when it becomes available to the public.
What?! Your church doesn’t have perfect lighting whenever a newly baptized baby is being clothed in her baptismal robe?
"O most merciful Christ our God, who clothe Yourself with light as with a garment, grant me a robe of light." -Byzantine baptismal ceremony
Dear Denver,
I’m in town for the weekend to see my family and celebrate our podcast’s 10th anniversary. I’ll be concelebrating the 11:30 AM Mass (w/ my podcast cohosts) at Saint Joan of Arc, Arvada on Sun. the 12th. I’d love to catch up afterwards with anybody who can make it.
Bartender at my fav LA restaurant:
“I’m thinking of going as you for Halloween.”
I don’t think he committed enough to shave his head and smile non-stop all day.
Of all the glorious superpowers we celibates possess, no one talks about the ability to assemble products that ordinarily require two people. And (usually) without any tears!! (can someone please photoshop a cassock on one of them and ❌out the other one?
I was just notified by a barista that she’s on step number two. Anybody have connections and could get me a gig at L.A Theology on Tap in the next year?
Guy strolled into our parish shrine, bowed his head in front of the icon of the Mother of God, and left one marijuana cigarette in amongst the candles and flowers. Kind of widows mite-y?
I’m Byzantine so…
-Venerable Gorgonshuthymus of Koomandaloonis
-Woman-Martyr Ataria Ustabeeunchaste
- John the Weird Eared
-Equal to the Apostles and Hierarch of Rhode Island and All-Earth Ed
-Origen
What are your top 5 best friend saints, not including Mary and Joseph?
I'll go first:
1. St. Ignatius of Loyola
2. Saint Francis Xavier
3. Saint Anthony of the Desert
4. Saint John XXIII
5. Saint Augustine
CHRISTIANITY: Belief that one God created a universe 13.79 billion yrs old, 93 billion light yrs in diameter (1 light yr = approx. 6 trillion miles), consisting of over 200 billion galaxies, each containing ave. of 200 billion stars, only to have a personal relationship with you.
I needed a simple way to remember to pray, fast and work for the scouring and healing of our Church after the revelations of the evils done by some of her leaders and members. I had these wristbands made hoping wearing one would help me remember. (contd.)
@FrHarrison
I think the one solution is not expecting Sunday at a parish to be someone's first experience of what it looks like to live a life of faith. If we create interaction and community closer to someone's "real life", then by the grace of God they will desire the Sunday experience.
Prayer to the Mother of God
O Theotokos, my most holy Lady! By your holy and all - powerful prayers drive away from me despair , forget fulness , misunderstanding , and carelessness . By your mighty prayers cleanse my clouded mind and bruised heart of all this…
@fr_quizzical
I used to think “Imma be passed out drooling on myself the whole flight” was is a good reason not to wear them, but then I found out people find God’s presence even in that.
I’m sitting in a cigar bar reading the incredible story of the saints of the day, a story of heroic purity and self sacrificial love, while overhearing two men talk about their favorite porn. These saints are truly the light of Christ in a dark world. Martyrs Theodora and Didymus
Almighty Word of the Father… enlighten my mind by the light of the understanding of Your Gospel, my soul by the love of Your cross, my heart by the purity of Your teaching. Protect my body by Your sacred passion and my senses by your humility…
Prayer Before Sleep- Antiochus
@jdflynn
18 years today!! And pick away! We appreciate the feedback done in love…the Byzantine ordination ritual includes the bishop laying his hands on our head and saying “the Holy Spirit fills all that is lacking…”
Before your venerable death on the Cross, * mankind stood in terror of death. * But after your glorious Passion, * it is death that stands in fear of man…
-Morning Prayer
2/10 Holy Martyr Charalampus. Tortured and killed at 113. They scraped his body with hooks and he said "Thank you, my brethren, for scraping off the old body and renewing my soul for new and eternal life." His name means “Lamp of Joy”. We are all a lamp of something! Pray for us!
I went to the Flower District the day before Mother’s Day. I’m definitely a city boy, and I love crowds, but that was absolutely insane. Also, isn’t my new Momento Mori chotki absolutely awesome!?
…Help me quench the fire of evil passions . Free me from mem ories of evils long gone by . For you are blessed by all peoples and your glorious name is praised , now and ever , and forever . Amen
Fr. Michael O'Loughlin, who Chris calls, "the most content man he's ever met" teaches us in this episode how to tap into the eternal joy of Christ and to live it out in our daily lives and daily conversations.

Congratulations
@PadreMichaelO
and Mother Natalia on your 200th episode of What God is Not!
And thank you for the three-episode-long deep dive into Great and Holy Week!
Your show has been such a blessing to me. 🙏
Buona Pascha!
“Today is suspended on a tree He who suspended the earth upon the waters.
The King of the angels is decked with a crown of thorns.
He who wraps the heavens in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He who freed Adam in the Jordan is slapped on the face.
The Bridegroom…
I didn’t know the Latin Church did this too! For Byzantines:
Monday-Angels
Tuesday-John the Baptist
Wednesday-The Cross
Thursday- Apostles, St. Nicholas
Friday- The Cross
Saturday- The Deceased, Saints
Sunday- Resurrection
Do you remember the Catholic custom that each day of the week is dedicated to a special devotion? If there’s not a saint’s feast day on a particular day, I celebrate a Votive Mass based on the day’s devotion.
I’m having one of those wonderful mornings that I am sure I will try to replicate over and over again by going to the same place and hoping the experience is as joyful.
If you’re at
#SEEK23
I’ll be podcasting in the media fishbowl on Wednesday at 5:15pm.
@Cameronfradd
is joining me to discuss canon 1370 para 3 or whatever else we don’t plan ahead of time. Miss you Mother Natalia!
Tonight, live on at 7EST - I’ll be chatting with
@PadreMichaelO
about how he’s bringing the Gospel to coffee shops and pubs and Dr Dre’s bar. 🙂
Don’t miss it!
The greatest honor is that I've now brought all of my children to the Holy Land as pilgrims. To lead my children to Jesus is my primary goal
Lord, may I embrace my role as spiritual leader of my family even more deeply. It's the greatest honor of all.

saints today (Jan. 31st). Unmercenary Healers Cyrus and John are patron saints of those who suffer with insomnia. Holy Martyr Tryphaena is the patron saint of mothers who are unable to breastfeed their babies.
“While there is much in the world to love, it is best loved in relation to the One who made it. The world is beautiful, but much fairer is the One who fashioned it. The world is glorious, but more delightful is the One by whom the world was established.
