The car will be out of power and may actually crank several times to start. Also,the engine will either run too lean or too rich which will result in a different fuel consumption pattern. You can also spot a bad MAF sensor if the check engine light is on and reads MAF sensor.

A pattern too rich, combustion is black smoke coming from the tailpipe because the extra fuel cant be burn't in the combustion chambers. A contaminated or failed MAF sensor cannot measure the amount of airflow correctly. The ecu then miscalculates the amount of injected fuel.

When the hot wire gets dirty, it cant do its job anymore. It is partially blocked from accurately determining the air volume. Other problems can be wiring harness or a bad connection. Disclaimer:Do this test with alot of care to avoid damaging the sensor. Or engage an expert.

Combustion is initiated by an ignition spark jumping across the electrodes of the spark plug. When spark plugs wear out,the gap between the tips extend leading to ignition and combustion lag in seconds which in turn lead to increased fuel consumption!

-Checking dipstick and oil warning light -Over-filling engine oil effect -Engine leaking or burning oil(probably your piston rings or valve shaft seals are bad. SOLUTION New valve shaft seals and bump up the viscosity of the engine oil.
