Some GUI screenshots of phone interfaces from the mid-late 2000s. See the alt text for more info!
This is possible on many Qualcomm-powered feature phones thanks to the documentation out there for its diagnostic interface.
Around 12:00am for each time zone in the US,
#Verizon
's CDMA cell service went quiet. Here are some photos shared by ROMphonix members as the network became weaker, before eventually shutting off altogether.

More ringtone sample source discoveries! Every single sample used in the
#Samsung
"Techno Dance" ringtone has been found, making a lossless recreation possible! Here's a quick example of such:
This
#LG
LF1200 preloaded ringtone and this song from a certain Nintendo game sound a little too similar...
(LG LF1200 video courtesy of Sunyerid on YouTube)
Here's the Windows "Passport.mid" MIDI as played by 5 different phone synths.
Download links to the separate audio files and a higher quality version can be found here:
CMX Studio, an in-house Qualcomm tool used to make ringtones, has recently been uncovered and it simulates Qualcomm "Brew" software synths quite accurately. The setting used in the video is "CMX 2.X".
Download it here:
The original samples used in a
#Samsung
shutdown sound heard on phones like the SGH-E335, SGH-E900 and others have been found by
@edentrix1
! They were found in Ueberschall Sample Libraries.
The file hosting site has announced that it will delete "old, long unused files" by November 16th. This is important because there are dozens, if not hundreds of accounts that have uploaded firmware files and other tools pertaining to older phones.
The "Space War" game included on the
#Samsung
SGH-X426 has a title theme similar to one from a Sega Mega Drive game... wonder if it's more than just a coincidence.
This sound (Bell 6) from the
#Samsung
SGH-T500 may not be a ringtone banger, but it almost sounds like the startup sound to some sort of early 90's "future" PC.
The differences in some Yamaha MA-x tones really shows how capable it can be.
This is a
#Qualcomm
Reference Device, the example here is specifically known as the "6280 F-US" as noted by the sticker below the screen.
It's a very interesting piece of tech, including both BREW and J2ME runtime support as well as having a plethora of debug and testing apps.
The miniBAE software synth that was used in tons of
#Nokia
phones (and others) was open sourced a while ago, but a fork from zefie has made it usable on PCs!
In the video, "Jig" from the Nokia 7260 and "Frenitian" from the Sony Ericsson P800 are played.
This sound file seems to be on almost every
#Samsung
phone with a Yamaha SMAF sound chip. No idea what it's for (if anything) though.
This comes from the SGH-C260, but it can be found on many more models.
One of the menu themes from the
#Samsung
SPH-A790 / IP-A790 as a single GIF.
Oddly enough, this and a few other Samsung Sprint phones store certain menu graphics and the boot animation as lossy JPEG frames!
#DidYouKnow
? In
#Samsung
"Anycall" phones, it's often possible to take screenshots by quite literally dumping the memory locations that the framebuffer uses!
Shown are framebuffer screenshots from the SCH-G100, SPH-W5000, SPH-V6900, and SCH-V600.
Thanks to the AOSP source code including it, the Sonivox FM (or "arm-fm-22k") software synthesizer is now available as a standalone Windows program! Here are 3 phone MIDIs rendered by it:
Custom ROMs for feature phones in 2024? Believe it! Here's one for the
#Motorola
E398:
I could not possibly go over everything added in 1 tweet alone, so definitely give the MotoFan forum post a look:
or a YouTube video by EXL:
Many new sample source discoveries from
#LG
ringtones have all come from one single sample disc! Here are just a few found in "Airport", "Calling Trip", and "Orange HardDISK":
The Nokia N-Gage is a quite well known attempt at a gaming phone, but both LG and Samsung had a go at this concept as well. Shown below is the
#LG
SV360 and
#Samsung
SPH-G1000.
An interesting tidbit about the
#Samsung
GT-B5702 is that one of its wallpapers was also in Windows Longhorn build 5048. In fact, this isn't the only example of "Longhorn" content appearing on a Samsung phone.
Decided to finally release the progress of the "High Resolution Phone Wallpapers" pack. There's still lots to add though!
Hopefully the link will stay the same as it gets updated too.
Another unreleased prototype
#Samsung
phone has been dumped!
This is the Samsung SPH-M250, a Sprint version of the SPH-B2500 (or SCH-B250) that was canceled before release.
Firmware dump is available on the Dumbphone Repo as always:
Custom ROMs were also sort of a thing in the era of old phones too. Many
#Motorola
phones such as the E398 had "Monster Packs" that included many custom skins and other features such as native ARM .elf program loading and more.
(MotoMix and MotoG are the ones in the pictures)
3 images of the elusive
#Samsung
SGH-D307 have been found. Before these were uncovered, much of the content available showing this phone was limited to decade-old 240p YouTube videos and 3D renders.
If dumping RAM on Qualcomm-powered feature phones wasn't over-the-top enough for getting UI screenshots, the same process with JTAG might just be!
Memory searching and JTAG test points were utilized on the
#Samsung
SGH-X427m and Gravity TXT to get clean rips of their interfaces.
#DidYouKnow
? Faith Inc., the organization that worked with Qualcomm to develop the CMX audio engine, also worked with chip manufacturers to produce hardware sound LSIs. There's even an authoring tool for them!
Here's "Melody 7", originally titled "May", from the Samsung SGH-E620
Found this old youtube channel named "KouTetsuGumi" that has many covers of video game music supposedly done on
#Yamaha
SMAF chips. Listen for yourself!

Custom themes known as "skins" for
#Motorola
phones such as the RAZR V3 were all the rage in the phone's time. Here are some of the most fitting mid 2000s looking themes I could find.

If you're looking for misc. retro phone aesthetics and information (such as phone wallpapers and other random goodies), you've come to the right place!
Link to High Res Retro Phone Wallpapers:
Been a while since I've uploaded one of these, but here's a preview of the newest Real Hardware Ringtones vid. This is one of the tones from the
#Motorola
i265 called "Lowdown".
#DidYouKnow
? Older Sanyo devices released in the U.S. have standby pets known as "MyBuddy", similar in concept to machi-chara on NTT Docomo devices. In the case of the MM-5600 and SCP-8400, it's a 3D model!
(1/4) In this thread I'll be posting the animated wallpapers ripped from the
#Samsung
SGH-D307, starting with the only option once "Digital Clock" is selected.
Happy 25th anniversary to the Internet Archive, and happy 20th to its Wayback Machine too!
Without tools like this, there'd be no good and interactive way of seeing how websites were back then. Not just that, but the immense amount of things backed up too.

Here's a sneak peek of something in the works..
High resolution phone wallpapers!
In this simple teaser photo, a default wallpaper from the
#Motorola
C139 is shown in the phone's original resolution (96x64) and in high resolution (2048x1366).
3 images of the elusive
#Samsung
SGH-D307 have been found. Before these were uncovered, much of the content available showing this phone was limited to decade-old 240p YouTube videos and 3D renders.
And now for some other examples of "Longhorn" content on
#Samsung
phones (these sounds weren't actually in any Longhorn beta, but they were thought to be for years)! This time it's sound related.
The ROMphonix website now has a section dedicated to phone sounds recorded off of real hardware!
(make sure the beginning of the link says HTTP, this site doesnt have HTTPS yet!)
One old phone that still fascinates me is the
#LG
Crystal (or LG GD900). A keypad that was clear and also lit up was surely a futuristic look for phones, especially back in 2009!
Photos curtesy of yugatech, mobilegazette, and goodgearguide.
This dump is version "htc-29386.0.9.0.0", which has its own BetaWiki entry:
Because of this development prototype's open nature, all it took was a few commands from the Terminal app and a microSD card!
Download here:
#DidYouKnow
? The Spectrasonics Atmosphere VST was used to make the Samsung Sonic Wellness track "Forest".
More specifically, the Dynamic Sprinklers patch.
4 default wallpapers that were seen across many different
#Motorola
phones during the mid 2000s.
These were usually called "Scarlet", "Techno", and "Moto" (for both the pics on the bottom row).
The
#Helio
Ocean, also known as the
#Pantech
PN-810A, has been dumped!
This is the only phone released in the US to use the Yamaha MA-7 sound chip - the last in the SMAF series.
Firmware is available on the Dumbphone Repo as usual, and sounds are available on phonetones!
#DidYouKnow
? There's a program called mSnap that functions as a screenshot tool for older Motorola phones. As an example, here are some screenshots taken from a
#Motorola
RAZR V3.
Credits to
@wackypacc
for taking these.
Always nice to see the commercial i-appli backup scene slowly but surely build up!
From what I've seen, said cable was made by shorting pins 8/9/10 in a FOMA data cable. It took approx. 8 hours to dump the phone!
Keep in mind SD backup decryption still has a long road ahead.
More good news on the Japanese feature phone game preservation front! User "xyz" dumped an N901iS via a debug cable. In doing so, they preserved Dragon Quest 2 (first volume) and N-Golf 3D, both preloaded games. This new method will be tested on other phone models.
All of the animated menu icons from the recently dumped
#UTStarcom
CDM-8955 as one GIF.
These icons, as well as many of the phone's other graphics, are in Curitel's proprietary "AP" image format.
Happy to announce that I am now part of the Andrelouis Phone Tones archive!
Most of that will probably be giving real names to ringtones and other sounds, as the majority of the archives are named Sound_1.mmf, Sound_2.mmf, and so on.
Developer credits rarely appeared in mobile phones at all. However, thanks to recent contributions, members of ROMphonix Club were able to rip this unused graphic from the
#Samsung
SPH-E2000!
A wallpaper from the
#LG
L1100.
Original image is known as "Black and white cat sniffing". No credit for the picture is listed but this photo seemingly originated from Photodisc.
The Korean-exclusive
#LG
SV360 (a.k.a. CYON Mobile 3D Motion Game Phone) has been dumped!
This is version SV360521, dumped using the phone's JTAG interface.
Firmware is available on the Dumbphone Repo as usual.
#DidYouKnow
? This 1024x768 wallpaper is included as a test file in certain
#LG
phones, such as the GS390 and GU295. On both phones, it's simply called "A.jpg" and can be found in the LGAPP/Pxo/ directory.
It's known by some that many Motorola ringtones were arranged by Keith Manners thanks to credits in the MIDI files. A similar story is true for the tones on early 2000s
#Kyocera
phones!
Many were composed by someone named Michelle Fuhrman. This pic is from "Kyocera_Ringer1.mid".
While not strictly a phone, there is an emulator of the
#Palm
m515 that has some good progress. It's called "Mu", and can be used with RetroArch if that's your thing.
Was not aware of this until recently, but RGB light modding was a thing for old phones too! The phones in this post are certain
#Samsung
devices with some extra LEDs added.
(will be amazed if Twitter crops this right)
You might not expect many layers to something like old phone info, but there's been some interesting things found recently.
The
#UTStarcom
CDM-180 has been dumped! Originally thought to have no JTAG test points present on the board, it turns out they were hidden plain in sight on the TTA-24 (TAS.KO-06.0028/R2) connector itself.
Happy Halloween!
This is the "Holloween" wallpaper from the
#Samsung
SGH-T500.
The original stock photo is known as "Jack-O-Lanterns", and was once available on Media Bakery. Unfortunately all of the links are broken :(
The
#Samsung
SPH-M270's firmware was dumped recently, of which opened up access to its filesystem. Strangely enough, the image below of someone hex editing Sprint-branded LG and Samsung firmware is hidden inside of the filesystem...
#DidYouKnow
? Even old flip phones had emojis! These four come from the emoji set that
#Sanyo
and (post Sanyo merge)
#Kyocera
used on many of their devices.
Wallpapers from the
#LG
L1200 that was dumped yesterday.
Besides the first pic, all of these are standard LG wallpapers from the time except with the Cingular logo edited in.
#DidYouKnow
?
Despite using J2ME for app distribution, some Sprint-branded (and by extension Sprint MVNO)
#Samsung
phones still contain traces of Qualcomm's BREW platform!
Shown here is an SPH-M240 on the AppManager, a replacement known as AppUI, and a BREW 2 version of Pac-Man:
While by no means the first of its kind, the Z520 is one of few Sony Ericsson phones to feature animated ring lights around the frame of the phone. This is just one example of the few patterns the phone has to offer.
Tomb Raider on a BREW feature phone? Believe it!
This is a software-rendered port of OpenLara done by usernameAK, and the phone the homebrew BREW app is being played on is an
#LG
VX8610.
Sticking to the
#Google
Sooner topic, thanks to the aforementioned dump, the prototype's ringtones have been ripped and uploaded!
(Replace HTTPS with HTTP if you click the link, Twitter redirects force HTTPS which this site does not have!)
Now this is a first when it comes to things in phone firmware dumps - 3D image textures!
These belong to the animated 3D wallpapers found on the recently dumped
#Samsung
SCH-M309.
Thanks to generous donations by both Clonelocker () and Rare Noggin Stuff (
@RareNogginStuff
), the following
#Samsung
phones have been successfully dumped:
SPH-A860
SPH-A880
SPH-A800
SCH-M309 (potential prototype)
