The issue isn’t simply “the Doctor killed all the Sontarans” It’s that a story that gave us the mass genocide of 4 different species can barely find time to treat those actions with any kind of weight or significance.

@5WF The mental gymnastics people go through to defend this convoluted, poorly plotted, and frankly dull era of Doctor Who is insane to me. This is storytelling at its most mechanical and hollow. It’s like people lower their standards so much purely because “it’s Doctor Who”.

I’m gonna say it. The Chibnall era suffers from being “performatively” political. It places itself on a pedestal and lectures the viewer with incredibly simplistic takes at best, and downright hypocritical ones at its worst.

I really don’t like the narrative that the only people who object the Chibnall era’s handling of political themes are apparently anti-political, racist, or sexist. There are plenty of legitimate criticisms to make that don’t boil down to “diversity BAD” or “woman BAD”

@spacethirteen Usually such prior actions taken by the Doctor are framed as morally dubious, or with a degree of nuance. There’s often a thematic reason for such action to be part of the story. Without this, we get Thirteen making yet another questionable decision that’s framed as heroic.

@spacethirteen Whilst far from the worst action she’s taken, it’s still another to add to the pile. One that the episode treats with barely any weight or nuance A consistent issue with Thirteen has been the way she’s always presented as morally correct, whilst taking questionable actions

I think it’s unfair to suggest “Moffat doesn’t get any grief for the War Doctor.” The War Doctor appeared in one specific Anniversary special and was the result of extenuating circumstances. It wasn’t Moffat’s first or second choice.

Whilst they’re entitled to enjoy her, it is bizarre seeing Thirteen stans fall in love with a version of the Doctor that not only misinterprets the character’s core traits, but that also presents her increasingly questionable actions as morally correct.

What Chris Chibnall has done to Doctor Who is reset the boundaries of storytelling. From telling the story of Rosa Parks to The Timeless Children, he never played it safe and pushed Doctor Who into new completely new territory. For a 60 year old show, that’s an huge achievement.

@TerwillikerInst The way I see it, the issue is more the use of CG vs the amount of CG. I love the potential of CG, but I hate how it’s used. Rather than being treated as an important, planned part of the process, it’s used as a fix-all solution in post.

There it is again, “subtlety”. It’s not subtle, its hardly there. These moments are always incredibly on the nose, we just barely ever get them. The characterisation simply isn’t there to make ‘subtlety’ possible.

Why is so much focus placed on the social-political responsibility of the casting? No matter who you cast, you need to put effort into the characterisation and themes for it to work. Jodie’s era shows than even a progressive casting choice doesn’t guarantee a progressive show.

Oh sure it’s just some musty colour grading. Never mind the cluttered shot composition, static blocking, cramped close ups, focus-pulling issues, constant shaky-cam, murky lighting, choppy editing, and lack of spatial continuity. It’s the best the show has ever looked!

I believe with this era of the show (some musty colour grading aside) has been the best the show has ever looked. Chris Chibnall wanted to give the show the aesthetic of an ITV-drama & it was an astonishingly good look for the show. Double Negative's CGI work was also top-tier.

If your entire engagement with a TV show has been theorising as to where it ‘might’ be going, doesn’t that suggest that you don’t actually care about the story it’s telling, merely the idea of a more interesting story being told eventually?

I think people need to stop treating Doctor Who as some untouchable entity or worshipped creation. It’s literally just a good idea for a show that it manages to deliver on maybe 60% of the time. I love it, and it inspires me everyday, but it’s literally just a show.

The thing I'm most interested in about RTD2 Doctor Who is how the show looks. He seems enthused about bringing everything from his first go back and if that includes the cinematography then I'll laugh. RTD1 Who is the 2nd worst looking era after the 80s.

@Diamandahagan You don’t know what “cinematography” is and you’re basing your argument on superficial qualities like the camera technology and limitations of the time. The only real issue was being over-lit, but the shot composition and overall direction was FAR superior to Chibnall.

“Rosa” is bold in concept but chickens out with an incredibly surface level and, at times, problematic exploration of its issues. The Timeless Children is a twist that effectively goes “What if more Doctors” yet fails to generate compelling drama or conflict from it.
