A decade of through-balls in Premier League:
Through-balls are one of the most lethal passes in football. They have a good conversion rate & are exceptional at splitting opposition lines.
With ~13k through-balls in the last 11 seasons, here is a closer look at them.
[A thread]
Portugal vs USA pass network|
#FIFAWWC
Well this tells a story.
-Portugal's midfield diamond clearly visible, USA's midfield non existent
-Portugal's strong connections & possession ideas compared to USA's left side bias and reliance for progression & creation
Deadliest through-ball combination in La Liga | 2009-10 to 2021-22
I was looking at the combination that has produced most goals from through-balls between them and...
I think this Lionel Messi guy is a freak of nature.
📜FIFA Women's World Cup is about to take over & with it the players will gain a new fandom.
Here I will try to shine light on some players who demand your attention going into the tournament down under.

Naomi Girma vs Sweden |
#FIFAWWC
Girma was the standout player throughout the tournament & in this game as well.
Her defensive awareness to put out fires & her on-ball quality to help switch point of attack & progress play is phenomenal.
All the tools to be the best CB itw!
Christian Eriksen vs Arsenal | Premier League 22-23
Eriksen was stellar vs Arsenal. His ability to play those vertical line-breaking passes from deep was among the main reason for United's first goal & it helped them in buildup as well.
Brings the calm to that United midfield.
These Spanish players deserve this, they are one of the most talented pool of players internationally BUT the circumstances this is happening in will only delay the change that is so desparately needed.
Sweden continue to be the bridesmaid but never the bride. Feel for them.
What a season this has been for Spurs
1. Qualified from a group of Barca and Inter
2. Beat Dortmund in R16
3. Beat City in Quarters
4. Beat Ajax after being 3-0 down with just 45 mins to go
All of that without spending a penny and with major injuries
TAKE A BOW!!!!!!
Most dangerous passers by zone (so far) | Ligue 1 22-23
•Malo Gusto🔝
•In Zone 14, the player with 2nd highest xT so far is Lacazette with (0.5 xT). Messi has 2.51 xT.
•Mbappe from cutback zone
Romelu Lukaku as an outlet | Chelsea vs Arsenal
Lukaku was a brilliant outlet for Chelsea throughout the game, receiving 22 (!) progressive passes (most in the game, 2nd best Mount with 7). His hold-up play & ability to link-up with others is fantastic.
Incredible performance!
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal has played some scintillating stuff in the first 3 games but a common theme in all those games has been the drop off between 1st half & 2nd half.
The period from 46th-75th min is where they lose a lot of control in games.
Better teams *may* punish that.
This is what I feared the most if Spain succeeded at the World Cup.
These results will only cement their believe that whatever has happened and continues to happen is right in some way and that continuing with it will bring success. It couldn't be far from the truth.

82 key-passes
A 22 year-old Fabregas captained Arsenal and produced magic every time he touched the ball. Golden boy!

Real Madrid are into the UCL SF
No let me say that again..
REAL MADRID
-without Ramos AND Varane
-without Carvajal or Vazquez
-playing Liverpool, Barca & Liverpool within 1 week
-with 35 yo Modric playing 270/270 possible mins
-With Valverde playing as RB
ARE INTO UCL SF!!
England's first senior trophy since 1966 is achieved by the very people they banned from playing football.
I think that's poetic and beautiful. Give them the stage and they will shine!
Melchie Dumornay vs England |
#FIFAWWC
Dumornay with an absolutely gargantuan performance against European champions. When she carried the ball it was purposeful, her positioning off-the-ball was incredible & she was unbeatable in duels.
What a way to announce yourself!
Most dangerous passers by zone | Bundesliga 21-22
•Raum's numbers aren't a typo
•Diaby (1.26) & Gnabry (1.22) rank 2nd & 3rd respectively behind Muller for xT accumulated in that right half-space
•Gvardiol is progressive on the ball & attempts a high volume

Where do teams create the most threat from? | Premier League 21-22
•Liverpool's right side is most threatening.
•City and their usage of the halfspaces on both sides.
•Burnley with slightly deep & wide zone from where they usually cross from.

•Sané's resurgence from the LW spot!
•Freiburg seems like an interesting team
•Kostić has been brilliant in that LWB role for some time now
•Gnabry cooking!

Naomi Girma has been one of the most consistent and brilliant CBs at the tournament and gave a very good account of why she was the defender of the year in the US in 2022.
Has almost everything in her locker. A very solid first tournament to build on for her.
Dumornay is walking around like the shadow of Keira Walsh when not on the ball & then obliterating lines with her carries when she gets on the ball.
Incredible player!
Karou Mitoma ball carries & take-ons vs Liverpool
Mitoma's ability to provide penetrative runs into the box makes him such an excellent threat. He can break lines & beat multiple players with it.
Makes sense for someone with a thesis dissecting his own dribbling ability.
Jun Endo vs Norway |
#FIFAWWC
Endo has been one of the most consistent players at the tournament so far.
Her disguised balls, vision to play the ball around a team's block & offer a wide progression option with her positioning is amazing. Does very well defensively to.
Vinicius Jr - Benzema - Hazard territory map | Real Madrid vs Valencia | La Liga
While Vini offered width on the left, Hazard rather drifted inside and occupied central areas, resulting in the lack of width from the right side.
Shot stopping in Premier League | 2021-22
•De Gea has been at his shot stopping best this season & has rescued United multiple times. Dave Saves.
•José Sá has been a brilliant signing for Wolves.
•Robert Sanchez is quite underrated

Goalkicks in Premier League | 2021-22
•Man City play it short and are very effective at building from the back.
•Burnley like the route one better.
•Arsenal show good variation.
•Spurs not so great at utilizing either routes.

Ball progression (normalised) among CM & DM | Top 5 European leagues
•Rodrigo de Paul is arguably one of the best ball progressors around.
•Guendouzi has been putting up really good numbers
•Guimarães & Cheick Doucouré have been fantastic. Kroos & Pogba usual suspects.
Today is a big day for Real Madrid. The women's team are set to compete in their first ever final & could win their first ever trophy.
I hope every Madridista tunes in to watch history unfold. Today will be for the players here & ones who came before them. Proud of this team!
Caitlin Foord has become so vital this season especially. She fits in perfectly with the demands of a wide player in the Eidevall system. She can go direct, work rate is off the charts and provides the central threat as well.
Vinicius Jr vs PSG | UCL 21-22 (2nd leg)
He is blossoming into something special. He was basically the main attacking threat for majority of the game via his ball carrying.
Star boy!
She is not wrong.
The Reiten as an 8 experiment should be stopped, just play on the wings. Incorporate Vilde Boe Risa in the midfield for a little more balance and let Maanum do the attacking bits from midfield.

Eduardo Camavinga vs Chelsea | UCL 21-22
What a performance from the 19 year-old. His individual pressing action resulted in the interception for the first goal & then recovers the ball for the 2nd. His passing had a sense of urgency & he controlled the tempo well.
STAR BOY!
David de Gea ranked 13th in the Premier League for entries into final 40% of the pitch in 2021-22, with only 28.7% of his goalkicks entering the final 40%.
He attempted the most goalkicks of anyone (299) but only managed to register 13 direct entries, 6th worst in the league.
Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Benfica | UCL 21-22
TAA showcased his utterly ridiculous passing range against Benfica and helped kickstart Liverpool's attacks. Their 2nd goal came from a brilliant long ball by TAA to Luis Diaz.
He completed 12/14 long balls.

Most dangerous passers by zone | La Liga 2022-23
•Parejo and Kroos as the passing savant, capable of creating from deep.
•Pedri from zone 14 & left half-space
•Isi Palazón ranks behind Dembele from right-half space
•Alba from cutback zone on the left

A look at Arsenal & Man City's goalkicks
60% of the Arsenal's goalkicks are sent long, Ramsdale's distribution gives Arsenal a weapon to kickstart attack.
City keep is short & tidy, often ending inside their own box. Very good at using it to reach final 40% of pitch.
Goalkicks in Premier League | 2022-23
•Brentford with the highest % of goalkicks that reach the final 40% of the pitch
•Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle prefer to go long while City, Spurs & Fulham go short
•City with the highest % of buildup entries in the final 40% of the pitch
Liverpool has treated their women's team as a complete afterthought and they've been under funded and the treatment of players has been truly shocking for a club of Liverpool's stature.
You'll never walk alone but seems like if you are Liverpool's women's side you might have to
While everyone is talking about Ada Hegerberg's return to international football and rightly so, there is someone else who made her return to the international stage after being outcasted for speaking out & demanding more.

One of the things I like about Grealish's ball carrying, apart from his gravity creating space for others, is how rarely he concedes possession from those carries.
One might argue he plays it safe but he offers enough penetration while not being wasteful.
There are tactical questions to answer about Grealish at City, but I cannot bring myself to agree with the suggestion he isn't still a ridiculous player for them. The way he carries the ball, draws men to him, and therefore creates space and time for others is invaluable
Fede Valverde vs Chelsea | UCL 21-22
Fede's presence was absolutely integral in Real Madrid's defending & threat on the break. His workrate to contribute defensively helped keep the right side in check & his ability as a two-way threat via his ball-carrying helped in transitions
One thing to note in Real Madrid's La Liga opener against Deportivo Alaves was the fact that how narrow the front three of Hazard-Benzema-Bale were. All three moved inside, Bale more so than Hazard, freeing space for Vazquez on the overlap & Hazard rotating well with Alaba.
Happy Birthday to Lionel Messi, the man that has captured so many souls with his filthy dribbling and nutmegs.
He was literally toying with players in 2014-15 season💀
On her 30th birthday, here is something that never ceases to amaze me.
From 2018/19 to 2020/21 season in the WSL, Lia Wälti attempted 1145 passes with her left foot & 1280 passes with her right foot, having a success rate higher than 83% with either foot.
Ambipedal much?
In a few hours, Kosovare Asllani will make her debut wearing the Real Madrid badge, a team she called out for not having a women's team just over a year ago.
She wanted this change and she came here to lead this change and I couldn't be more thankful. A real Madridista🤍
Eduardo Camavinga vs Celta Vigo | La Liga 22-23
Camavinga is genuinely insane, incredible influence from left back and then equally insane from midfield.
10 ball recoveries
6 progressive passes
6/7 successful take-ons.
WHAT A MONSTROUS PERFORMANCE. STAR BOY!
Katie McCabe vs Canada |
#FIFAWWC
McCabe was phenomenal against Canada beyond her goal. She was creating, carrying & some of the turns under pressure were so sublime. Captain's performance!
An Olimpico for her country's first ever goal at the World Cup is stuff of dreams.
Sophia Smith's performance vs Vietnam |
#FIFAWWC
Most progressive carries (5)
Most take-ons (11)
Most progressive reception (9)
She offered an outlet, made runs in behind and took on players like she always does.
Arrived at the World Cup & traumatizing international defences.
Aurélien Tchouaméni 21-22 | AS Monaco
Tchouaméni is a monster defensively in terms of pure volume of disruptive and ball winning actions he performs. Would be a great screening presence in that midfield. He is also good on the ball.
