#OTD in 1939, Germany invaded Poland and thus plunged the world once more into war. Canada was forever changed by the war. Out of a nation of only 11 million people more than 1 million Canadians served in the armed services. More than 43,000 lost their lives. #canada #history

#OTD in 1941, OLt Franz von Warrna escaped from a train near Smiths Falls, ON, crossed the US border and returned to Europe. He is believed to be the only Axis prisoner of war from Canada to make it back across the Atlantic. He was killed in October 1941. #history #WWII

#OTD in 1917, at Passchendaele, Sergeant George Mullin, of the PPCLI, attacked a German pillbox and killed a sniper outside it. He climbed onto the pillbox's roof and shot two machine gunners. He compelled ten others to surrender. For his actions Mullin earned the #VictoriaCross .

When forced to register as an enemy alien he threw his war medals on the table saying “What are the good of my medals?” We must remember Masumi Mitsui’s story.

He emigrated from Japan and fought at Vimy Ridge. He earned the Military Medal at Hill 70. Upon return, he had to fight for the right to vote. In 1942, Canada called him an enemy alien, seized his farm, and forcibly relocated his family. Never forget Sergeant Masumi Mitsui.

#OTD in 1917, the Canadian Corps attacked the heights near Arras thus beginning the Battle of #Vimy Ridge began. Most of the Corps' objectives were taken on the first day. The German defenders at Hill 145 held on until the 10th and the "Pimple" was taken on the 12th. #history

#OTD in 1918, Cpl Joseph Kaeble, of the 22nd Bn, held off a German advance, alone, at Neuville-Vitasse. He was wounded and before losing consciousness, he shouted “Keep it up boys; do not let them get through! We must stop them!" He was awarded the #VictoriaCross for his actions.

#OTD in 1957, HMCS Bonaventure was commissioned into the @RoyalCanNavy at Belfast, Northern Ireland. She was the first aircraft carrier to be owned outright by Canada. She was paid off in July 1970 and sold for scrap. #Canada #history #Navy

#OTD in 1944, the fighting at St Lambert sur Dives ended. Major David Currie had led Canadian troops for 3 days trying to close the #FalaiseGap . Currie only had 1 hour of sleep during the 36 hours of battle. After being relieved fell asleep on his feet and collapsed. #WWII

With an influx of new followers, I'll introduce myself again. My name is Brad St.Croix. I've been interested in military #history since I was quite young. That interest led me to complete a PhD in history from @uOttawaHistoire . I wrote my dissertation on the Battle of #HongKong .

He was shot by a Canadian sentry leading to the lost of a finger. As an artillery officer, he was trained as a pilot to be able to direct artillery fire from the air. He was very skilled as a pilot. #DDay #WorldWar2

June 6, 1944, James M. Doohan of Vancouver, led D Company of Royal Winnipeg Rifles ashore at Juno beach. He would be shot 6 times, survive and go on to become Scotty on Star Trek.
