Nintendo releasing an overpriced clock while their fans are on their knees sobbing and begging for switch 2 news is somehow the most Nintendo thing they've done this year.

A long thread about how harmful one of the new specials, splattercolor screen, has been toward people with sensory issues. Its getting banned in competitive circles recently and some people are being ignorant, please listen to people like me as to why this is🧵

🚨 KOSA UPDATE 🚨
Recap of what's at stake:
- Our ability to protest for Palestine.
- To be openly LGBTQ.
- To not have to use a ID to use social media.
- To be free from suffocating political censorship.
The theme for the 16th Splatfest is in! It asks: "What would you do at the world's end?" Same Ol', Bucket List, or Save the Day?
It's an ominous theme, but fortunately hypothetical, so you can participate worry-free.
This event runs from 5/17 at 5pm until 5/19 5pm PT!
First of all, I would like to preface that I don't play competitive, I'm a spectator who plays the game casually. I have sensitive hearing and my eyes are sensitive to bright lights, and I've been enjoying Splatoon 3 since it launched last year.
From the get-go, I knew screen would either be not very effective or annoying at best, but I never anticipated it to cause physical harm to me. The first time I was hit by the special in game, the extreme brightness and fuzzy noise was very unhealthy for my senses.
I felt slight eyestrain, a sharp pain in my head, and my ears began to ring. The ringing in my ears persisted the most, and it affected my gameplay for nearly double the time the screen effect last. Running into it on repeated games, whether by accident or having to, made me sick
"That's the point of this special!" How much you're affected by it varies on how sensitive you are to the effects. Besides, it shouldn't be so effective to the point where it makes you sick.
I have been overestimated by Splatoon 3 in the past, but its never been to a point where it made me feel physically ill. I've loved many things about this season, but I'm disappointed in Nintendo for letting what is basically a spit in the face towards people like me in this game
"Just don't go through it!" Screen is a displacement special that is comparable to inkstorm. It takes up a huge chunk of space and moves up for a while without the opponents being able to destroy it.
"Lower the brightness/volume to compensate for screen!" And when screen isn't in play? I'm at a full disadvantage because I might not be able to see or hear things clear enough, just to compensate for an effect that attacks my senses for 9 seconds.
The difference between storm and screen though is that I'm not being discouraged because its a disadvantageous position, I'm being discouraged because it makes it harder for me to sit through a whole match. I can still be forced into moving through it too.
The competitive scene choosing to be more inclusive towards its playerbase is a good thing, nobody should have to quit comp over something only Nintendo can control. If you really want your foil squeezer in competitive, be vocal about this issue towards Nintendo.
There are multiple accounts of others experiencing similar physical harm from the special too, I'm not a rare case. Screen takes accessibility away from people with sensory issues, and as a result its being banned in multiple competitive settings.
I really hope splattercolor screen gets patched to be much less aggressive very soon, I think the idea for the special has its merit but was implemented very poorly.
On that note, please be mindful towards players with disabilities when discussing screen. I and others who suffer from similar sensory issues who are vocal about this just want to enjoy the game, a special shouldn't take that away from us.
@Riomations
Obviously there's AI that exists out there that works well, but this is specifically targeting Ai generative content. Sorry if that was unclear
@dastyyup
Ai is extremely accessible and fast by comparison, hence why its much more dangerous for situations like this. Photoshop takes time to learn, while Ai generating just requires you to get a computer to take a bunch of pieces of different images to make what you want.
@Suslent
Outdoor cats are both unhealthy for the cat and whatever ecosystem you let them out in 😭
Domesticated house cats are invasive species in many areas they're let out in and are usually responsible for the death of billions of small birds.
Going to bed soon, only just noticed a typo, "overestimated" is suppose to be "overstimulated" lol
Other than that, thank y'all for sharing experiences and generally interesting discussion, I've never had a tweet blow up like this before 😭
Hoping Nintendo changes screen soon
@_DivineOmen_
Are you saying fight fire with fire? Cuz that only makes a more deadly fire.
Its better to prevent a situation like this then let it get worse overtime, and its clear we've reached a stage where its a genuine threat.
Here in Kirby fandom civilization, no one gets too attached to niche characters. Its safer to gravitate towards Magolor or Meta knight, whom already get a lot of attention from HAL then it is to form a connection to a character that gets a single bread crumb every decade.
@dastyyup
It's not about the same end result, its about the accessibility. Anyone can try to do something like this with an Ai generative program and get results in seconds, there's basically nothing stopping people from trying to do gross shit like this because there's no skill barrier.

If these people really cared about children's media they'd be upset about all the internet content made specifically to make as much money off of children as possible in exploitive ways.
