Rory Gallagher has been lauded for his coaching ingenuity. Derry are showing a huge amount of attacking creativity, utilising various shapes to expose opponents. The most remarkable part is the game IQ of players both on & off the ball to set different ones up and execute plays
Cork avoided Kyle Hayes all day by not hitting ball down on top of him. But there was a subtlety to this, when he advanced forward for his only score, Darragh Fitzgibbon immediately exposed the space he'd vacated.

Derry are constantly evolving and bringing new attacking ploys based on their opponents set up.
Rory Gallagher's team are reimagining what attack in Gaelic Football looks like as they try to develop an arsenal for all comers.
What are Armagh to expect in the

Playing in the image of their manager.
@MeathGAA
made a return to a kicking games as they attempted 15 kicks to inside line from outside the 45 against Cork. Winning 8 of these and scoring 1-7 off a scrambling Cork defence.

There is still room for an old school man marking corner back as evidenced by Nathan Mullen
@sligogaa
as he managed to derail Keith Beirne.
Berine scored 5-49 in the previous six games before being held to 0-3 (0-1 from play) on Sunday, even missing uncharacteristic frees.
Is Kieran Kingston now giving game time to forwards based on work rate?
Hoggie has been hauled ashore the last two days soon after half time, as he isn’t doing the foraging of other players.
The goal getter Connolly is far more than just a finisher.
.
@ballygunnerHc
produced a fantastic display to overcome
@NapGAA
on Sunday. The game was rightfully lauded for it intensity but Ballygunner won the tactical puck out battle.
They scored heavily off their own puckouts, particularly short ones.
Neither resulted in scores but Armagh looked to set up structure attacking plays in the closing quarter against Kerry. They used a 'spine' and a 'clear out' formation in an attempt to unbalance the Kerry defence.

Clare made a decision to go man on man with Limerick and suffocate their puck out. This worked to an extent as Limerick only retained 50% of their own puckouts and only 40% of one that went past their own 45.
But Limerick found a way. Their line always seem to solve a problem.

Cork scored a point from all of their first six puck outs in the second half. 0-6 return. The first three were all the exact same, down on top of a Brian Hayes mismatch with Kyle Hayes staying zonal and over Declan Hannon's head.

CONOR GLASS TOUR DE FORCE
The
@WattyGrahamsGAA
man gave a performance for the ages on Sunday as he had fingerprints over a lot of what Glen done well.
Turnovers, contesting kick outs, points, goals, freeing up space and organising men he did it all.
Jimmy’s winning matches!!!
Jim McGuinness has stated his second coming with three league wins. So far he is all about contested long kick outs on both sides and moving the ball fast with the foot.

Limerick are again League Champions as they look to land a fourth All Ireland in a row and they look better than ever.
Below we look at 6 aspects of them in the league where there is improvement from where they were already the barometer.
Tyrone being Tyrone!
There is something about the Kerry jersey that brings out the competitor in
@TyroneGAALive
as they celebrated the battles throughout the game as they secured a much needed two points. They set traps, hunted as a unit & tackled aggressively to shut down Kerry
Gearoid Hegarty has produced the goods on the biggest day three years in a row. His performances have been all action, power and finesse.
Scoring heavily across three finals & huge PO option.
Strong passing networks with Quaid, Will O'Donoghue, Tom Morrissey, Cian Lynch.
Oisin McConville described him as “the worst kept secret in Derry football”. He added that he is “wise beyond his years & going into places others won’t”
Watch how Cormac Murphy uses pace across full depth & width of pitch & sets up marker, an addition to
@Doiregaa
attack
Ethan Rafferty, the converted keeper, continues to be a pivotal part of the
@Armagh_GAA
attacking plan. He had 32 in play involvements and these in play involvements helped contribute 0-5 for the Orchard county and scored a free where a left footed striker was needed.
Utilising the offensive mark
Oisin Gallen put on an attacking clinic against Derry. His use of footwork, game understanding and timing to free himself for passes saw him claim 3 marks (scored all 3) and also 3 from play, many off one of the best man-markers in McKaigue.
Adam Hogan managed to win 4 front foot (crowd rising) frees against Kilkenny. His low centre of gravity and understanding in the tackle making it difficult for opponents.
What can opposition teams learn in terms of tackling men like Hogan and a best approach to stopping them?
THE INVISIBLE GAME!!!
The invisible game on Kevin Walsh is a fantastic coaching insight. His impressive record against Mayo continued with Cork last weekend as a final quarter assault led to victory
Video below shows his 79:1 principle & 6 defensive pressures for close games
Neither resulted in scores but Armagh looked to set up structure attacking plays in the closing quarter against Kerry. They used a 'spine' and a 'clear out' formation in an attempt to unbalance the Kerry defence.

Tipperary’s plus one tactic was ineffective against Offaly as the Faithful men used ball through Dan Bourke in the vacant 10 position, placed ball outside +1 on delivery and carried with the extra man in the middle sector. Offaly avoided aimless striking.
WORKRATE!!! What is takes to be the first team in a club to win a county title!!!
@ShinroneGaa
landed their first
@Offaly_GAA
SHC in their history at the weekend as they dominated KK in the workrate stakes.
Aerial bombardment!!!
Eoin Murphy hit 16 balls which landed inside the Dublin 45 last weekend. This resulted in a 1-6 return.
The focus on puckouts should be end outcome of that phase of play rather than initially securing possession.
What does the year hold for the goalkeepers in Hurling? They are advancing much like their football counterparts and operating as quarter backs at times.
Both Billy Nolan & Enda Rowland had positive impacts on their teams attacking transitions in league clash.
Cork are top goal scorers across all divisions to date. They are showing a willingness to make incisive runs with and without the ball.
The return of Sean Powter to their attack gives them serious creativity.

Limerick flooded the Clare delivery zones & long delivery landing zones. Clare only won 8/28 deliveries to their forwards. Limerick punished severely scoring 1-8 from these 20 possessions, using their intricate passing game to play back through Clare.
THREAD 🟢🔴🧵
Mayo have displayed a significant amount of creativity throughout their league campaign. They have added defensive & attacking threats to their arsenal. Here we have a look at six of them.
While Cork won the overall turnover of possession battle, it was Clare who dominated the tackle turnover battle. The most important aspect of this was these turnovers by the forwards.
Derry created huge depth to their attacks against Donegal with 3-12 of their 3-14 finishing or having a play in the high zones inside the 21m line
The creativity to some of the attacks is visible in video below
🫂 Exploiting Donegal man marking key Derry men
📐Smart angled runs
Liam Cahill teams are known for their attacking strengths. They manage to make the Pairc as big as possible for Cork to defend, as they shifted possession from side to side.
Barry Nash is being touted by man as a potential hurler of the year. Corners backs aren't typically teed up for such an award. Is the converted forward evolving the role of the modern corner back???
Houston Rockets GM, Daryl Morey labelled Shane Battier a Lego player.

The anatomy of Kerry's goal in Munster final.
A divine right to be great or working hard & learning on the training ground?
🏃♂️Runs into vacated space
🏀Evasion and dummies on the bounce
🧙♂️Ball carrier dictating others runs
↪️Back Door Cuts
Shane O’Donnell has come back from serious concussion set backs. The
@CLGEireOgInis
man has been a more abrasive figure than ever in attack for Clare this summer always seeking out work on & off ball.
Derry managed to dictate the Dublin defensive shape as man to man battles ensued all over the field.
Speed of attack from Derry and kicking over the top as runners identified vacant spaces helped unlock Dublin.
Kerry tried to implement an aggressive kick out press following all four David Clifford scoreable frees in first half against Mayo. One worked and they turned over Mayo defender. However the three sent long by Reape were all won by Mayo and Mayo scored 0-3 off them.
Diarmuid Ryan continued to have a strong influence on the game. His willingness to join attacks and get his man defending is a real challenge for opposition. Like Kyle Hayes in previous years he is changing the role of a half back
Clare dominated the Cork Puck Out, particularly in the first half as they won 13/14 long and Cork failed to work any of their 5 short to a possession in Clare half.
Cleary spoiling Hayes and Conlan screening Barrett was central to this success.

Galway's second half defensive adjustment was able to curtail Dublin's progressive kicking. Note the cohesive movement of Tomo Culhane here from a defensive perspective.

Limericks attention to detail is second to none. The Sunday game live highlighted their sideline defensive arc at half time. But the numbers suggest it didn’t work as Waterford won 7/11 of their sidelines, as they went around and over it.
Carrying a county on his shoulders?
Well not quite but Ryan Taylor seems to be a designated ball carrier for Clare. He has carried ball ~1-1km in championship with 0-9 coming from these carries.
His first instinct is to carry, which is his first action 77% of the time.
Innovation in PO strategies are in vogue, Cork and Waterford are trying very different methods.
At times, Cork opting with 8+ inside their 45 and Waterford going with 0 inside their 45.

Third man runs are the most unstoppable pattern in football. De Bruyne may be an elite ball-striker, but it's the pace, power, combination play, and runs from deep that enable him to use that ball-striking.
When you make a run, the defender must react to you. You are in control.

After sending off of Paddy Mullen, Ballyhale kicked on but we’re helped by The Village poorly using extra man
💣 6 balls struck aimlessly from inside own 45 (4 to Richie Reid)
👀Sucked into tackle zone & losing runners
How do you solve a problem like Clifford???
McKaigue with a tight approach couldn’t live with him. His semi final 0-9 tally was very impressive in a display full of movement and variety in positioning. His danger also allows score involvements by drawing defenders.
🧵Cork Puck Outs v Limerick 🧵
Cork ripped up the script for the first half against Limerick and Collins hit ball down the middle and Cork got numbers around the break winning 78% first half PO breaks. This was aided by Hannon & Hayes staying within Limerick's PO structure
Cork are trying to find perfection with their puck out execution but the problem lies when it is not won clean as they are at a numeric disadvantage on the ground.

Kieran McGeeney is often agitated by the suggestion that he won't let Armagh play football. This couldn't be further from the truth as they consistently use progressive kick passing. This led to 1-3 on Sunday against Galway (1/2)
Read more here:
Galway are hurling in the image of their manager Henry Shefflin as they are working hard up the field and causing turnovers.
They got 16 turnovers in Dublin half of the field and converted scores of eight of these.
Limerick this Championship have managed to get scorers from all sectors of the pitch, along with a scoring impact off the bench. The half back line & half forward line have done damage from distance. Depending on how a team sets up Limerick will hurt you accordingly. 🎯
John Conlan gave a heroic MOTM display in group game between Limerick & Clare. But Limerick planned accordingly, managing to play over & around him in Munster final, negating his influence while really using Reidy & Gillane.
Clare done so much right on suffocating Limerick platform.
Limerick got message into players of how to adapt on the pitch during Hawkeye break and also through their physio.
Their ability to game an opposition with an excellent game plan is to be admired.

While Tony Kelly & Shane O'Donnell magic was central to the Clare attack, they also had periods of great link play from hard running and excellent angles of support.
Read more here:
Is Damien Reck going to be tasked with man marking Tony Kelly at the weekend? He will need to be alert to his role of winning breaks in the zone in front of competing men. TK is a master of getting in & out of this zone. He has won 14 of 16 PO's off breaks in this 'front' zone.

As the hurling shadow league begins is there anything to be read into teams at the moment?
@LimerickCLG
are showing a distinct change in their use of the ball as they build play. Are they getting ready to again be the best adapters come summer?
Conor McCluskey post Monaghan game, "Horse [Gavin Devlin] has challenged me to increase my scoring rate". The corner back has now scored three goals in the league.
When are his runs which are a vital part of the Derry attacking arsenal going to be stopped?
Galway tried to play Kilkenny on their terms in a dog fight in Leinster final but Kilkenny were more familiar with what is required in such a battle.
Kilkenny with four times as many full tackle turnovers.
Galway with 50% more fouls in tackle.
Liam Cahill teams love goals!!! Hard running from the middle third & skill execution to hand a factor in three goals. Also 2-0 direct from Waterford puck outs. Honesty and workrate a factor in all!!
@TipperaryGAA
playing an explosive brand of hurling, to be expected under Cahill
Brian Hayes was a standout attacking threat for Dublin against Antrim but was this a necessity as a result of a structural disconnect between the backs delivering ball and the forwards movement?
Mayo managed to win two of the five Roscommon Kick Outs with a busy press following Cillian O'Connor scoreable frees. A number of teams are using this aggressive press when playing opposition with a limited KO arsenal.

Clare managed to make adjustments to shut down the Cork puck out in the second half. They got their midfielders and half forwards to kill the space that cork were looking to exploit.
Armagh suffocated Fermanagh in the first half as they tackled with intent, doing so high up the field, pressuring the man in possession with contact and allowing no soft out balls
Cork punished carelessness by Kildare as they mined 1-4 on fast attacking transitions where the ball went from comfortable Kildare possession to score in under 15 seconds on five occasions.
All comfortable possessions under minimal pressure followed by lack of defensive urgency.
Can the real Galway please stand up. Galway have got to the semi final without excelling just yet. Their forward output will need to increase considerably if they are to have any chance against Limerick. Their reliance on Conor Whelan is huge at the moment.
The evolution of how Limerick use the ball following a short puck out since 2019 Championship.
Limerick have changed from a mix of carry & strike pass to almost all strike to middle & attacking third. And they are getting better!

There is something very different about how Clare & Limerick protect their goals.

This is consistent theme and aids their in match adjustments.
