I have written & deleted a tweet more than 10 times now in the past few days on academic corruption, dishonesty, & stealing of ideas. I literally am traumatized by a recent event. All relationships are based on trust esp. in academia-unbelievable how some people just ignore that.
My group is recruiting 2-3 PhD students for Spring and Fall 2023. Research topics include: catalytic (nano)materials, membranes, and 3D printing for water treatment and
#PFAS
remediation; waste-to-materials for nutrient recovery; data science for water treatment.
#AichLENS
I will be joining the University of Nebraska Lincoln
@NebEngineering
as an Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering from January 2023.
This will, most importantly, give me the opportunity to be reunited with my wife after a long 4.5 years of long-distance relationship.
Sharing the news with mixed feelings:
After an incredible journey of 7 years, I am leaving
@UBuffalo
@UBengineering
end of this year. I am grateful for the friendships & thankful for the support I got for growing as an
#ECR
. I will very dearly miss this place, people & students.
One of my UG students is abandoning her plans for grad school & NSF GRFP apps to take up job so that she can protect her younger/minor siblings from their mother who is antivax politician. She wants to come back later for grad school. This just blew my mind with respect for her.
I am tired of hearing stories about abusive PIs. We are all stressed as PIs but it is not right to put that pressure on our trainees & students. As I tweet, I try to check if I am doing wrong with my trainees. Please empathize, self-evaluate, & change if needed.
@AcademicChatter
Many junior faculty get hurt & exploited by their students, when the PI is a very good & caring person (not me or my students). Many of my PI colleagues suffer from mental health issues when dealing with bad student behaviors & are super depressed. We need to help these PIs too.
Woke up with the news of a paper rejection which we didn’t expect. My first thought was about my PhD student & instead of forwarding the email, I called him up to discuss what happened. He didn’t deserve a forwarded email after 2 years of hard work. Now we grieve & move on.
This is Dr. Yun Wu, currently Associate Profesor of Biomedical Engg
@UBengineering
. She is my 1st collaborator & she taught me from scratch how to write an
@NIH
proposal, even line-items of the budget & how to interpret reviewer comments.

Finally got caught. It’s been more than a week now since symptoms, but still positive. Honestly, it’s been the worst feelings since my month long typhoid back in 2004. It is not an easy one to handle.
Our granddad was a poor village farmer with no education in Bangladesh, my dad got an MS and became high school teacher, my mom was the first PhD in our family abnd was a college teacher, my brother and I are first generation PhD in the US.
#Education
is the most powerful weapon!
When I was applying to USA/Canada for grad school, a faculty from my undergraduate department said that I shouldn't aim too high. 10 years later, I am going back (virtually) to give distinguished alumni lecture as the Youngest Faculty in North America from that department.
Yesterday was our 11th marriage anniversary. The moon was spot on. And we reflected on our past & present. It’s been an eventful journey with >6 years of that as long distance (& ongoing). Yet, we have come far & have grown together - lot more to grow & enjoy! Love U
@UpomaGuha
One of my
#ACSSpring2022
highlights was to get career and life advices from two amazing mentors -

I am blessed by their kindness & support. Hope to pay it forward to others.

Every time I am on a flight to Bangladesh- a huge emotion takes over. This is only the 3rd time in 13 years - 1st time since COVID started.
I feel you - international students & scholars - who are grinding away with all these!
Just got the news that our collaborative proposal to
@USDA_NIFA

Just heard that my uncle-in-law (brother of father-in-law) died of

01/20/2021 will now be forever memorable for me. Congratulations to Dr. Arvid Masud
@arvid_masud
for successfully defending PhD & becoming the First PhD graduate from

Major accomplishment in 2022 is to be able to finally get back together with

11 years ago this day I got on my first ever flight to come to the USA. I was so naive/immature-had to learn everything from cooking to driving, new rules, new culture, of course studying & research. Without help from family, friends, strangers, mentors - I wouldn’t survive. Thnx
Thanks to

To all those students who is not hearing the good news from

today, please know that applying was already a win. It takes immense courage & perseverance to even apply. And, please don't take reviewer comments to the heart - they don't define you.
@AcademicChatter
Most journals have the requirement of putting figures and tables at the end after the references. This is very problematic for reviewing purposes and also for any reader. Does anyone else think so?

After my PhD defense, I told one committee member: 'I wish I could repeat, I could have done better. I now know how many things went wrong.' She replied: 'Don't worry. This is how it's supposed to feel. We are researching unknowns, & realizing that is a success'

Today is a very important day in

’s and my life. We received our green card almost 10 years after coming to US. Although it may seem trivial to get a green card, but honestly for internationals like us it is huge relief from professional, personal, and emotional stress.
Very happy that our paper on 3D printing for graphene-based water treatment is now featured as a cover article in the journal

Today I listened to a 1st yr PhD student at another university who want to switch bcoz of toxic advisor. 3 things came to mind: 1) Why can’t these advisors be a little more supportive? 2) How can self-evaluate as an advisor? 3) I was a lucky PhD student.

Getting updates from parents every week/month we hear some relatives - close/distant - pass away. It's a time that scares us all. Being international student/faculty/professionals, we cannot go & mourn the way we would otherwise. The emotional toll of this situation is enormous.
Had a foodie celebration of the Bangla New Year to cheer up the mood! Gola khichuri (lentil rice), chicken BBQ masala curry, hilsha fish fry and curry, spinach with Hilsha, eggplant and pointed gourd fry, and tomota salads.

The best feeling after becoming faculty so far - I am so proud of my student. Details coming later, but honest to god, there is no other feeling greater than the students' success. I could cry in joy!!!
March 13, 2020 to August 19, 2021: With all scary things with the pandemic, we got to stay together. Today it ends as I am driving back to Buffalo. Strange how life works. Grateful that we were together during the scariest time. We start

One of the most important thing I learnt in last 6 years as a TT faculty is - A Strong Support System of Colleagues, Mentors, Friends, and Family is a Must - they keep us afloat from drowning, pull us up, & guide the way we never could have imagined.
#Thankful
@AcademicChatter
My parents stayed for a month with us. This is the longest in the last 12 years after coming to the USA we stayed together. Eli enjoyed the whole time and when they were crossing the TSA, Eli cried. Leaving is never easy.

Bit of a good news: UG student in my lab got MS/PhD offers from 7 schools out of the 10 she applied to - 5 top 10 environmental engg programs - 2 of them with full financial ride PhD with one Presidential Fellowship. I am stoked! She has the sweet problem of too many options!!!
Bangladeshi scientists who are rocking the world with their inventions and dedications for research and equity! Proud of them and I get inspired everyday thinking how much they have accomplished with the limited resources they had. Looking forward to the days coming.

What to do to celebrate? Honestly I wasn’t ready for this today!!!! As an immigrant POC, the amount of relief and happiness is unfathomable!!!! I am in tears.
The best compliment on teaching I got today. The students asked if I am teaching any course next semester because they want to take it. I will take this as a win!
This was probably the most nerve-wrecking talk I have ever given. And of-course it was to my department. But it's been wonderful to show what we have achieved
