That’s it - my last day in the Army after 34 years of service (and 43 in uniform - from Cadet to Colonel). Thank you to everyone who made it such an amazing experience. So many memories and people to thank - but above all my wife and family. It’s been an honour and privilege.
80 years ago, following an attack that killed 10 and wounded 26 Nazi soldiers, 2,794 Serbian civilians - including 144 school boys were executed in Kragujevac. The picture of the boys holding hands with their teacher is heartbreaking. The resistance continued. Rest in Peace.
On this day in 1940 the S.O.E. was formed. One of its members was Anthony Quayle, who later became a famous actor. Earlier this week I visited his secret hideout off the Albanian coastline - in which we discovered four Vickers Machine Gun tripods that they had left behind!
My last Remembrance Sunday in Regular service. Next year I will march as a veteran. The baton has already been passed to the next generation

Brilliant. This sums up Mission Command - don’t tell him how to do his job -just tell him what you want him to achieve. Teaching himself to speak Polish in order to carry out his mission, epitomises the professionalism of this soldier and demonstrates his cultural intelligence.
A picture that pains a thousand words. At the end of this week my daughter

this week did so in their combat uniforms. I am proud that my daughter was one of them and the first female to win with Enterprise Award. With no Commissioning Ball - we celebrated together - 1500 miles apart.
80 years ago this evening in 1944, some 54 members of Force 133 of the Special Operations Executive gathered close to a makeshift runway in the mountains of Serbia ready for their evacuation. With them there were 42 British and US airmen, 12 Poles and two others.

There are many links between Serbia and the UK. On this day in 1973 Milunka Savić passed away. In 3 wars she was wounded 9 times. She was to become the most decorated woman in the history of warfare - one was the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George for her heroism in WW1.
A very proud father moment. Not only is she at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst; in her final term; and under so much pressure that few can ever imagine - she is using what spare time she has to organise an event to inspire other women to achieve their full potential!
Finishing my final term with an event to try and inspire young women to consider the Army as a career. Genuinely had the best time this year and can't wait for what's to come in the future.
Just over 77 years ago, 57 members of S.O.E. and over 50 Allied airmen and POWs were flown out from a mountain airstrip in Nazi occupied Serbia. In memory of that event, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace unveiled the first ever S.O.E. memorial in Serbia.

Whilst visiting Novi Sad today, I came across a classic tank. Whilst many will think of the movie ‘Fury’ when they see a Sherman - for me - I only think of one of the greatest war films ever made: ‘Kelly’s Heroes’
@militaryhistori
Milunka Savić - the most decorated woman in the history of warfare, is remembered at a memorial in Inđija near Novi Sad. Amazing pictures of British and Empire troops - including Flora Sandes and Sir Thomas Lipton (Lipton Tea) who came to Serbia in her hour of need in WW1.
Two Defence Attache’s looking rather pleased with themselves having just visited a long lost secret base of S.O.E. in Albania with a group of young officers who have been trained in the U.K. Unforgettable moments in the footsteps of legends.
This is a picture of the most decorated woman in the history of warfare. Her name was Milunka Savić of the Serbian Army and was wounded nine times during three wars. For those debating the latest change in
@DefenceHQ
@BritishArmy
regulations on hair - note how Milunka wore it.
On 1 November 1918 Flora Sandes, a British woman soldier serving in the Serbian Army, took part in the liberation of Belgrade from Austro -Hungarian forces. Despite her injuries she marched the 400 miles in 7 weeks alongside her Serbian comrades. A truly inspirational woman.

George (Đorđe) Mihailović, the keeper of the Serbian First World War Military Cemetery at Zeitenlik, in Thessaloniki, has passed away at the age of 95.
He was the third male (and last) of his family to take care of the graves of those killed on the Salonika Front. Rest in Peace
On this day (15 Sep) 1918 Serbian troops supported by 🇬🇧, 🇫🇷, 🇮🇹 & 🇬🇷 forces broke through the fortifications of the Central Powers at Salonika and went on to liberate Serbia; contributing to the Allied victory in WW1. A ‘forgotten front’ - not forgotten.
75 years ago Belgrade was liberated from Nazi occupation by the Red Army and Yugoslav Partisans. The UK provided the largest military support to the Partisans up until this point. A few days later the UK Flag was very visible in Republic Square on Tito’s return
@ukinserbia
A Vickers Gun mounted on the type of tripods that were still inside the cave. Amazing that after 76 years they are still there - mind you it is not easy to find.
“For you the war....is NOT over!” Between 29-31 May 1944 over 100 SOE operators and Allied airmen were successfully evacuated by

@ukinserbia
On Christmas Day 1942 British S.O.E. Colonel William Bailey was parachuted into present-day Serbia to support Gen Mihailovic and the Yugoslav Army of the Homeland’s attacks against Axis supply lines passing through Yugoslavia on route via Greece to Rommel’s forces in N. Africa.

80 years ago SOE Capt Bill Hudson was making his way from the Adriatic to Ravna Gora in the Serbian mountains to support the Resistance against the Nazi occupation. By this stage Royalist Chetnik and Communist-led Partisans had created the first liberated territory in Europe.
Despite the wind, rain and a “fuel crisis” - over 8000 motorbike riding servicemen, veterans, partners and supporters assembled @ the National Memorial Arboretum for the annual ‘Ride to the Wall’ in order to pay our respects to the fallen since WW2. Lost but not forgotten

So proud that my daughter was part of this. It was a real shame that she did not have the Sovereign’s Parade that she deserved. No one can take away from her the fact that she has earned the respect of commissioning from RMAS. She just did it differently.
Traditionally, when officers leave

Just back from a brilliant week in 🇧🇦 with 🇬🇧Army HQ staff. Ideal to discuss the lessons from a war whose character and nature is in many areas similar to that in 🇺🇦. Peace will come - but what will it look like? We will be wise to learn the lessons (good and bad) from Dayton
In WW1 Britain fought shoulder to shoulder with the Serbian Army on the Salonika Front. The War cost the Serbs 1/3 of their population and 58% of their male population. In WW2 Yugoslav casualties were greater than 🇬🇧🇺🇸and 🇫🇷 combined. Lest we forget.

This signalled the end of the SOE mission with the Royalists (known as 'Chetniks') after Britain decided to give full support to the Communist-led Yugoslav 'Partisans'. The Chetniks, at great risk, guided the British officers and downed airmen to Pranjani.

....over a hundred Allied officers and men had been flown out of Serbia. We, as representatives of a large nation, were given by representatives of a small nation a lesson in manners and on how to conduct oneself with dignity in adversity". The last aircraft took off on 31 May.
The operation was kept secret to avoid issues with the Partisans and was the inspiration for a much larger operation launched by the US OSS/15 USAAF called Operation HAYARD that evacuated a further 500 allied airmen from occupied territory. A memorial now stands to their memory.
A moving visit to Vido Island and Corfu Town to walk the ground where, in April 1916, what was left of the Serbian Army arrived on Corfu. Of 450k who retreated over the Albanian mountains only some 200k survived the journey. Six months later they were back in the line at Salonika

In 1944 British personnel stuck behind enemy lines found fellow heroes in local troops and villagers in what is now Serbia. Together they built an airstrip under the Nazis' noses from which 2,400 Allied Airmen escaped. Today
@BWallaceMP
opened a memorial to mark their courage.

75 years ago this evening an operation was launched to safely extract 67 members of the British Special Operations Executive, as well as 60 Allied airmen shot down over occupied Serbia. Tonight British and Serbian officers dined in London as a mark of our continued friendship.

at the annual day of remembrance for Serbian and Greek soldiers killed in WW1 who are buried in Pirot. 101 years ago our three nations, along with the French and Italians fought ’shoulder to shoulder’ for Serbia’s freedom.
During the 1942 North Africa campaign, Mihailovic's attacks against Axis communications - especially along the Belgrade-Nis-Salonika railway, were a key factor in reducing supplies via the shortest route to Rommel - thus contributing to the eventual Allied victory in N Africa.
