Cartersville seniors Tee Webb and Jonah Gambill will be signing with Louisville and Memphis, respectively, on Wednesday, per CHS recruiting coordinator Joel Miller. Former Canes standout Trey Creamer is also anticipated to sign with Charlotte, following a JUCO stint this fall.

Matt Montgomery has officially been named the full-time head baseball coach at Woodland. The Cartersville High graduate served as the interim head coach for a vast majority of this past season after one full year as an assistant for the Wildcats.

Final: West Forsyth 10, Lambert 0 Both teams are now 6-1, as the Wolverines end the Longhorns’ unbeaten start to the season. All 10 points resulted from bad snaps by Lambert’s punt unit. Conversely, West Forsyth punter Luke Anderson did a phenomenal job flipping the field.

Cartersville AD Darrell Demastus confirms the Canes will remain in Class 5A for the upcoming two-year reclassification cycle. CHS initially received 6A designation but other schools being bumped up in class pushed the Canes back down. As such, all Bartow schools will stay put.

Just spoke with #Cartersville graduate Anthony Seigler who says he will be heading to Tampa on Thursday, will take a physical on Friday and (pending the results of the physical) will be signing with the New York Yankees on Saturday at the slot value of $2.8159 million.

Adairsville head football coach Eric Bishop told his players this morning that he is retiring. His wins (60) and win percentage (.606) rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in school history. Bishop led the Tigers to the playoffs seven times in nine seasons, including the past three.

#Cartersville rising sophomore Buck Brumlow verbally committed Friday to play golf at the University of Georgia. As a freshman, Brumlow finished tied for second in the Class 4A state tournament. The son of two UGA alums said, “I just couldn’t turn it down.”

The Cartersville baseball team repeats as champions of the Battle for Bartow Baseball Classic, defeating region rival Cedartown 1-0 in a rematch of last year’s final. Neither team scored for the first 6 1/2 innings. The Canes drew four straight walks for the literal walk-off win.

Cartersville football game scheduled for this Friday at Alexander has been called off by the Cougars due to COVID-19 issues, according to Canes head coach Conor Foster. Cartersville is looking to replace the game this week, if possible.

Woodland wrestling has won the Class 5A state duals title, defeating two-time defending champion Buford in the finals. It’s the third duals state title and fourth overall wrestling state title for the Wildcats, who last captured the crown in 2011 as a member of Class 4A.

The Cartersville boys are headed back to the Class 4A state tournament after rallying from 16 down for a 61-55 win over LaGrange in the Region 5-AAAA quarterfinals. Perignon Dyer (18), Isaac Gridley (13), Micah Tart (12) and Amarai Orr (11) all had double-digits for the Canes.

Woodland head wrestling coach Adrian Tramutola is stepping down but will retain his athletic coordinator position at the school, per Wildcats athletic director John Howard. Tramutola led Woodland to seven state titles and eight runner-up finishes in his 13 seasons as head coach.

Woodland High announces Brandon Haywood as its new head football coach. A Rockmart graduate, Haywood previously spent time as an assistant coach at Cass. Most recently, he’s been at his Polk County alma mater. He and Adairsville new HC Jon Cudd are both Carson-Newman products.

According to @HoopsCanes , Cartersville senior Perignon Dyer broke the program record for points scored in a single season. He finished the year with 608 points — 10 more than Canes legend Lamar Heard scored in his senior season of 1978-79.

Cartersville felt a few breaks didn’t go its way against Cherokee, and this is a big one. On the first Warriors touchdown drive, a wide receiver clearly runs out of bounds before making a catch. Ended up being a 19-yard gain on 2nd-and-11, instead of an illegal touching penalty.

Per @GHSFdaily , Cass' 23-7 win over Dawson County was the program's first victory over a top-10 team since 1983 — the Colonels' best season ever. That year, Cass went 12-1, won its only region title, reached the state QFs, & defeated top-10 teams from Adairsville & Cartersville.

A sad update on a recent article I wrote. Ashley Welsch, wife of Forsyth Central head volleyball coach Brian Welsch, passed away last week at 37 following a nearly 3-year cancer fight. Attached is a link to a GoFundMe started last year by a family friend.

Woodland coach Colman Roberts announces his retirement after the game, ending his 18-year run with the program. Roberts finishes with a 390-254 record. His teams made it to state 13 times, reached the Sweet 16 five times and advanced to the Elite 8 twice, including this year.

Woodland’s season ends with a 10-1 loss to Jones County in Game 3 of a Class 5A state quarterfinal series. The Wildcats finish 25-11 and match the 2004 team for the deepest playoff run in school history. The Greyhounds will play in the Final Four later this week in Columbus.

Cartersville escapes with a 59-57 win over Madison County in the first round of the Class 4A state boys tournament. The Canes outscore the Red Raiders 22-10 in the fourth quarter, including ending the game on a 12-2 run.

Forsyth Central girls defeat Denmark 3-2 to win the Region 6-7A championship. The Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three goals in the final 18 minutes. Brielle LaBerge scored the first 2 goals for Central before Avery Berryman headed in the winner with 20.8 seconds left.

Final: No. 1 seed Forsyth Central 3, No. 1 seed Archer 1 The Bulldogs dominate the second half, scoring twice in under three minutes to advance to the 7A Final Four. Brielle LaBerge scored twice, including the sealer with under two minutes left. Avery Berryman scored the winner.

Final: No. 1 seed Lambert 4, No. 2 seed Walton 3 Longhorns win 4-3 on PKs. Santino Barrionuevo, whose goal with 78 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime, buries the winning penalty kick to give Lambert the Class 7A boys soccer state championship.

The Class 7A state champion Denmark celebrates with the large contingent of Danes who traveled to Duluth High to see a thrilling 1-0 win (4-2 on PKs) over Walton — the team that ended the unbeaten season of Denmark’s 2022 team.

No. 5 seed Forsyth Central downs fourth-seeded Milton in a five-set thriller (17-25, 25-19, 28-26, 17-25, 15-9) in the first round of the Region 6-7A tournament. The Bulldogs qualify for the Class 7A state playoffs and will face top-seeded Lambert in the region semifinals.

The Woodland wrestling team won a third straight Class 5A traditional state championship, with Caden McCrary, Caleb Henson, Jaxon Smith and Cole Cochran earning individual titles. Cass finished second, as Cole Hunt and Noah Hoffmeier won in the finals. Cartersville placed 10th.

It was a unique National Signing Day in Bartow County. I attended ceremonies for a soccer player, a football player, two baseball players, a hunter seat equestrian rider and a sports videographer. Just more proof that this area produces students capable of virtually anything.

The Cass girls repeat as champions of the AHS Tiger Christmas Clash, defeating Trion by a 71-44 final score. Tournament MVP Londaisha Smith had 17 points. Claire Davis (13 points), Haley Johnson (13) and Justice Bennett (11) also reached double-figures.
