Hey everyone, I was reading through the libertarian handbook and for some reason, I can’t find anything on how to handle a deadly pandemic. What am I missing? What is the Libertarian solution here?
Many companies will need a Gov’t bailout. I would not give them one taxpayer cent, unless the money buys preferred stock on behalf of American taxpayers. Every SS card holder gets an equal share of the stock. It all vests upon retirement. One giant finance company owned jointly.
@AnandWrites
Ya pal, I call those folks "Fauxgressives". They are progressive right up until it will cost them money or power, at which point they are like, "fuck that". Let's make the rich richer, but be nice to the blacks and the gays while doing it. Think Howard Schultz.
People think I’m joking, but I’m not. Index the minimum wage to the maximum wage. Tie to the earnings of the top 1%. Deliberately tie our economic fortunes together as a country. It would be better.
If I make $20 million per year and 9 other families make $50 thousand per year, then on average, we all make $2,045,000 per year. Yeah. We’re rich! Feel better, middle class?
This asshole
@BenSasse
voted to enact the Trump tax cut for the rich that both massively increased the amount of interest we pay and deprived the country of 1.5 trillion in revenue for important things. Complete fraud.
I wanted to riff on why business people like Howard Shultz usually make terrible political leaders. Put aside Howard's policy positions on economics which are straight up trickle down economics.
One idiot shoe bomber tries once to blow up a plane and now we are forced to take off our shoes in airports.
1606 mass shootings since Sandy Hook Elementary, 10's of thousands dead, and Republicans in Congress worked to make guns easier to get.
This is why when people (many of my peers) say "We need to run the country like a business" it makes me want to throw up. The country is not a business. Saying we should run the country like a business is like saying we should fly the airplane like a unicycle. You will crash.
I’m with Warren. Private equity is basically a cancer on capitalism. It is a business model that should be reformed or banned altogether. The private equity firm that just bought my family business bankrupted it within 18 months. Unbelievable, and zero accountability.
Private equity firms are destroying our free press. They buy newspapers like the Monterey Herald for cheap, cut the staff, and bleed them dry. My new plan to hold Wall Street accountable would end this looting.
I’ve been waiting 15 years for a Democratic politician to effectively sell progressive economic policy as pro-growth. Biden is the first to be able to do so. Paging Dr.
@RonaldKlain
I’m a complete hypocrite. I just gave rich people a $1 trillion tax break and NOW I’m worried about the deficit. I’m depending on you not being able to do simple addition to maintain my credibility.
I'm voting against this $300 billion spending hike. Fiscal responsibility is more than a talking point to trot out when the other guys are in charge. Let’s be conservative no matter who’s in charge, no matter who’s in the White House, or who controls each chamber of Congress
Hey,you, rural, middle class, conservative Trump voters. Was your expectation that your guy was going to try to pass a giant tax cut for rich, urban elitist, liberals like me, just so they can cut your Medicare benefits? Just wondering.
Running businesses well is super hard. The people who do it well are often extremely talented. But good ballet dancers are also extremely talented. We do not often recruit them to run large businesses. Be highly suspect of business leaders as political leaders.
Lots of my rich pal's are made super uncomfortable by this "Abolish billionaire's" talk. But it beats the shit out of "Kill all the billionaire's and take their stuff" talk, which is soon coming. Maybe we should raise wages. Just sayin....
Pathogens are a fact of life. Pandemics are a product of governing incompetence, wishful thinking and ignorance. This is
@realDonaldTrump
's report card. "F".
I won't lie. I would actually enjoy watching the secret service drag Trump, and his entire family out of the White House by their hair and in hadcuffs. Go ahead, mother fucker. Don't concede.
Howard Schultz: “I should pay more taxes.”
Ok. How much more?
“I don’t know what the number is. What I’m saying is we need comprehensive tax reform.”
How about a ballpark figure?
“Seventy percent is a punitive number.”
What’s not punitive?
“I don’t know what the number is."
"Bosses like me have had the power to force employees to work overtime for free. It's time to remind Americans overtime pay is a fundamental right." Thanks to
@businessinsider
for letting me write on the importance of restoring the overtime threshold.
If we can give the rich a $trillion dollar tax cut, we can give a $trillion in relief to the folks carrying student debt. 45 million of our fellow citizens.
Average student loan debt in the US is ~$30k (LOTS have more)
Many won’t fully feel $10k in forgiveness until after a Biden presidency is over, when they’ve spent 10 years paying off the other $20k+
Dems should be championing policy that people can feel ASAP. We need to go big.
Increasing the minimum wage to $15 immediately, particularly on large employers, would be enormously beneficial to the economy. Bonus: no increase in federal spending or taxpayer dollars.
Glad to see
@JoeBiden
plan calls for $15 minimum wage right away. Lowest earners won't have much leverage as we contain the pandemic and economy re-opens. Increasing the minimum wage will help.
@Noahpinion
The pitchforks are coming. And when they are here, there will not be a hole you can dig deep enough to hide from them. Gonna make paying people enough to live in dignity seem really really cheap.
There is a particular type of personality and ego type that ends up being a charismatic business leader. These people are usually the last people who you would want to put in charge of a democratic process.
Biden is reminding us that a thriving middle class isn’t the consequence of economic growth, it is the cause of economic growth. He’s the first post-Reagan President, advancing a new understanding of the economy that breaks from a trickle-down worldview.
Trickle down economics is believing that $1 trillion in tax cuts for rich people creates growth, but paying federal workers 2% more will bankrupt the country
NEWS: President Trump says he's eliminating a pay raise for civilian federal employees slated for 2019 in order to "put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course."
Your daily reminder that
@realDonaldTrump
has donated zero dollars to his own campaign, even though he is getting outspent 2:1 by Biden. Inquiring minds wonder why??
"Mr. Trump has so far donated nothing to his re-election campaign, even as it has spent millions on his private businesses, and some top aides are reluctant to directly request that he dip into his own bank account."
@ShaneGoldmacher
and me
People who are accustomed to other people snapping to attention when they walk into a room, and scurrying around trying to implement their commands and vision, are usually paralyzed and or enraged in circumstances where people openly disagree and where power is diffuse.
Wage theft should be criminalized. There is no earthy reason why someone who steals a TV worth $500 is sent to jail, but someone who steals $1000's or more from many people gets fined, at most. Wage theft is greater than all other theft combined.
Wage Theft >> Twin brothers who ran construction company stole 1000s of dollars from their immigrant workers
One brother responded to a worker's request to be paid by pulling out a knife & with his other hand, repeatedly punching the worker in the head
As many of you know, I think a lot about Neoliberalism, and the degree to which it has harmed our country. In the midst of this crisis, the anti-collective action, anti-government, libertarian nonsense this ideology represents becomes more vivd- and deadly.
Long rant: So earlier today, I got into a spat over the $15 minimum wage with
@JamesSurowiecki
and
@noamscheiber
. Because this disagreement over whether there is a mechanical relationship between raising wages and less jobs is incredibly consequential, I wanted to say more.
Democracies cannot survive unless a majority of the citizens believe that it serves their interests. Today, Democrats took a crucial step towards delivering the biggest proof point in a generation that government can help. More is needed, including $15 min wage, etc.
If you’re a typical college-educated American worker, your annual pay should be somewhere between $48,000 and $63,000 higher per year than it is now. Where’d that money go? For the last 45 years, it’s been funneled to the wealthiest Americans.
@dbbm96ckvv
Well, in one hour I've gotten 12,500 likes, 1700 retweets and 650 comments, 95% of which are some form of "me too". So other than that, no one cares, particularly your 25 followers.
I voted against the $1.9 trillion
#COVID19
package because it’s full of wasteful spending unrelated to urgent pandemic needs. Republicans, in good faith, sought to negotiate a compromise bill that would have targeted COVID assistance to those who really need it.
You know what is massively risky?? Spending twice as much per person on health care as every other advanced society, without covering everyone, with worse outcomes.
My friend
@Noahpinion
is wrong. The only people who cannot answer this question are neo-classically trained economists, clinging to their models. Everyone else knows that wages fell because worker power fell. That's it. End of story.
Gurner Group founder Tim Gurner tells the Financial Review Property Summit workers have become "arrogant" since COVID and "We've got to kill that attitude."
Let's remind ourselves: Daffy Fucking Duck would make a better president than Trump. This freakout over Bernie Sanders is appalling and stupid. He'll make a terrific president, just like all the other Dem candidates.
The number one physiological trait that predicts whether you will be conservative is "threat sensitivity". These folks can work themselves up about literally anything.
On Newsmax, Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL) encourages parents to go through kids' Halloween candy to look for rainbow fentanyl, just like his mom did when she was worried about razors in apples
A nationwide truck shortage is forcing thousands of shippers into a tough choice: postpone all but the most important deliveries, or pay dearly to jump to the front of the line
BREAKING: "This is a historical day for Chile," says the govt official who tweeted this video. Nearly 1 million protesters are in the streets of Santagio, Chile, now. Internet service is slowing down, as people use social media to make sure the world knows.
This is pure idiocy. Everyone knows why we are fatter. The fucking poison fed to us by Big AG and Big Food. Sugar mixed with fat in every processed food.
In 1976, 15% of American adults were obese. Now it’s nearly 40%. No one really knows why bodies have changed so much.
"This idea that people should eat less and exercise more — if only it were so simple."
Fer fucksakes,
@ericschmidt
it’s called a union. Or a $15 minimum wage. Or an increase in the overtime threshold. This is not complicated, unless you are a neoliberal.
Let's find ideas that can increase the wages of 100,000 low and moderate income workers by at least $10,000. Delighted to support call for ideas for a "unicorn for the middle class" - JFF's $1 billion Wage Gain Challenge.
@SchmidtFutures
@jfftweets
This "middle-out" tweet of the President's is far more than a slogan. He is literally re-teaching everyday Americans about economic cause and effect. This is the role narrative plays in human cognition.
How's everybody feeling about that trillion dollar tax cut for the rich and big corporations Trump and Republican's passed a year ago? Too bad we don't have that money to save lives and small businesses today!
I have the perfect response to those 23 Republican states rejecting federal unemployment benefits. Take all that money and divide it up among the states accepting the money. $600 per week better than $300. Cc
@RonaldKlain
@POTUS
Time to investigate high ranking Obama government officials who might have colluded to prevent the election of
@realDonaldTrump
! This could be WORSE than Watergate!
I think that the word “conservative” has lost its meaning and does not in any way describe the modern Republican Party. I propose the word “Regressive” as a way to describe the selfish, racist, misogynistic, and fact intolerant modern Republican. What say you Twitter?
Every year, $2.5 trillion—that's trillion, with a “t”—is redistributed from the bottom 90 percent of Americans to the wealthiest 1 percent. That $50 trillion used to go to working Americans. It’s instead been rerouted to the pockets of the top 1 percent.
This circumstance creates a temperament and skill set that is completely unmatched to the requirements of running something where literally no one has to do what you say, and where many people actively are trying to subvert you.
There is only one lever available to us to mitigate the impact of all of this on the country and the broader citizenry- a strategy we have not employed in 60 years. It is incredibly simple. Tax the fuck out of the rich. Trust me. We have tons of money.
Dude.Your family isn't homeless. Your kid doesn't have cancer. You aren't a solider, police officer, or fire fighter in (actual) harm's way. You are a billionaire running a tech company that has challenges. The only real personal risk here is to your ego. You need to man up.
Do you know what policies will pay for themselves?
1) Forgiving all college debt
2) Making higher ed affordable for all
3) Medicare for all
4) A green new deal
The best way to bring down executive pay is to require corporations to pay workers more- a lot more. The median worker should get a 100% raise to catch them back up with economic growth over the last 45 years. Do that, and exec pay comes down a lot.
It would be nice if progressives had more interest in bringing down CEO pay, but that is too simple We need lower pay at the top if we want to have substantial pay rises at the middle and bottom
This may be the most egregiously awful thing I’ve heard yet. The fact that this ass-clown can suggest this, and not fear for his life is proof positive that Neoliberalism is a worse infection than Covid 19. Fuck you John Mackey.
We do not and will not block, throttle, or discriminate against lawful content. We will continue to make sure that our policies are clear and transparent for consumers, and we will not change our commitment to these principles.
The biggest difference is that in business, everyone who surrounds you WORKS FOR YOU. You can fire them, at any time. As a business leader, you define the goals, the culture, the terms of service, everything. If people do not comply, you fire them or they leave.
If you want to be angry at someone over this, the gang who argued that we should shrink government down to the size that we can “drown it in a bath tub” might be a good target. Am I right,
@GroverNorquist
??
From broken ventilators to antiquated systems for paying UI benefits,
#COVID19
has laid bare the shocking dilapidation of our public infrastructure. Having treated the public sector with contempt for decades, we've depleted much of our capabilities.
