Universitas2 yang punya prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris mesti lebih ketat seleksi mahasiswanya. Banyak guru2 Bahasa Inggris yang ngga kompeten dan/atau ngga punya minat ngajar, jadi mereka ngajarin hal2 yang keliru ke murid2 mereka pas udah jadi guru.

@englishfess_ To those looking for explanation, diff. stress placement changes the meaning: 1. Not me, but somebody else. 2. Not once. 3. I never said it out loud, it was just an idea. 4. Not us, someone else should. 5. But we could. 6. We could torture him instead. 7. Not him, the other guy.

@bumblesupremacy This is fair enough. Kalo orangnya ngga nyari temen dan cuma nyari pasangan seagama yg nanti bisa dia nikahin, I don't see anything wrong. "Tapi kan temen doang ngga perlu seagama." I agree, but again, not everyone is there to widen their circle - not everyone has the energy.

Here's a prime example. Kalo gurunya aja tata bahasanya begini, gimana mau ngajarin murid2nya tata bahasa yg bener - bedain 'remind' sama 'remember' aja ngga bisa. And there are a lot more errors! I bet some of her students speak English with better grammar.

@englishfess_ While English doesn't measure one's intelligence, it's not just a language - it's one of the most spoken languages in the world. And as such, it gives to access to knowledge and opportunities, among others. It's NOT just a language.

I was once asked to help screen a potential English tutor at my workplace. I said no to said candidate because of his apparent lack of preparation and poor command of grammar and pronunciation, but they accepted him anyway. Less than three months after, they fired him.

@englishfess_ Couldn't be closer from the truth. Some are too obsessed with accents when really it's the last thing they should worry about. I've heard someone speak with what was supposed to be a "British accent", and I couldn't make out a thing she was trying to say. 💀

@englishfess_ Here's a tip. Think of something you do on a daily basis. That'd likely be a common daily activity, right? Meaning the verb is used frequently. Make a sentence in the present simple (V1). Then use it in the past simple tense (V2). Then use it in the present perfect (V3).

@englishfess_ "What are you reading?" ---> Smth happening in the present as you speak If you're talking about a general habit, it's supposed to be 'What do you read?' If you know anyone saying grammar isn't important, refer them to this so they'll stop thinking that. Grammar *is* essential.

@englishfess_ A makes the most sense from a grammar point of view, but meaning wise it sounds off. It's the present simple, so what it means is that the person has the habit of telling the other person (you) to stop eating. I'm assuming it's supposed to be 'I told you to stop eating.'

@englishfess_ Seen other replies pointing out the present continuous is broader than just an ongoing event in the present. Great point. However, a lot depends on what the speaker actually means - it could be either one. So, in my humble opinion, we'd have to ask the person, don't you think?
