This is my last story for The Baltimore Sun. I had a blast covering the Orioles for the past five seasons, but after spending the last three of those working toward a master’s degree, I’m excited to try something new. It’s been fun.
With all of its twists and turns, the final year of the Orioles’ lease has seemed much longer than that.
From an MLK Day rant all the way up to last week’s drama, here’s a timeline of the saga’s key events in 2023 as the end of the lease approaches.
I will not stand for this.. This is completely insensitive to everything going on in society, and it’s unacceptable. I will not be doing anything with Oklahoma State until things CHANGE.
Trey Mancini was in somewhat of a daze as he spoke with reporters just now. He said the Orioles’ training staff was among his hardest goodbyes: “These are guys who I credit with saving my life two years ago.”
With an announced crowd of 32,286, this is the first time the Orioles have drawn 25,000 fans to Camden Yards in consecutive games where the opponent was neither the Yankees nor Red Sox since May 2018.
The power of the floppy hat and the Hawaiian shirt.
Trey Mancini: “I always said I wanted to see the rebuild through and I feel like, in a lot of ways, I have. I think things are only going to get better here, and besides when I'm playing against them, I'm always gonna be rooting for these guys in here.”
The Orioles, down 6-0 through two innings of an elimination game, now have to sit through an entire ballpark singing along to Creed. The undoubtable low point of the season.
Starting later today and throughout the Orioles’ postseason run, Baltimore’s iconic Domino Sugars sign will have only the sets of “O” and “S” lit, ASR Group announced:

They’re all together on the Orioles’ roster now.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Orioles fan Joan Jett will sing the national anthem at Camden Yards ahead of Game 1 of the ALDS, while Adam Jones will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Ryan Mountcastle noticed there were more autograph seekers as he pulled into the Camden Yards parking lot today: “I was like, ‘Oh, you guys are that excited I’m off the IL?’”
It’s not just Toronto. Ryan Mountcastle is 23-for-50 (.460) since coming back from vertigo.
“It's easier when you're just seeing one baseball instead of three.”

The Orioles promoted Heston Kjerstad, the No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft, to High-A Aberdeen. After two lost years, he hit .463/.551/.650 in 98 plate appearances for Low-A Delmarva.
After the Orioles lost for the sixth time in seven games Tuesday, Brandon Hyde was asked whether the All-Star break was coming at a good time for them.
“We have five games to play to the All-Star break. We're going to need to play these five games well.”
Baltimore won all five.
Félix Bautista is on the field at Fenway Park. He had a glove in hand as he walked with head athletic trainer Brian Ebel and is now doing some running, seemingly having just completed a throwing session.
Trey Mancini on meeting 7-year-old cancer fighter Beau Dowling before the game: “I wanted to go over there after he ran the bases and just tell him he was awesome. I told him I had cancer two years ago and I’m doing well, and I know the same thing is going to happen for him.”

They were baseball’s worst team two years ago.
In 2021, the Orioles lost 110 games, and Relish lost the first 34 Hot Dog Races at Camden Yards.
Two seasons later, the AL East champion Orioles have won 101 games, and Relish beat out Mustard and Ketchup to win the Hot Dog Race race title.
What a year.
The Orioles trail the Yankees by 8 1/2 games in the American League East with 31 games to play. They have gained nine games on New York over the past 30 games.
Adley Rutschman on Trey Mancini: “He’s a guy that I look up to, that a lot of guys look up to. When you talk about a guy who's a leader, who's a team guy, that's him. He’s the gold standard.”
Jack Flaherty: "Adley was just awesome back there. Coaching staff was great, getting me prepped for it. ... All in all, everything has been unbelievable."
BREAKING: Ketchup wins the 2022 Hot Dog Race title at Camden Yards. Relish's win tonight makes it mathematically impossible for Mustard to ... catch up to its red rival.
Excited to announce that I’m joining The Baltimore Sun as an Orioles beat writer later this month.
The Big 12 Tournament will be my last assignment for The Oklahoman. I could not have asked for a better group of partners, editors and mentors to work alongside this past year.
Yennier Cano called Félix Bautista’s exit last night “one of the most difficult and sad moments I've gone through in my major league career so far.” He said it was weird to drive to the ballpark today without Bautista, who had to undergo testing, playing his music.

Mike Elias: "We've got blue skies ahead of us. We've got a No. 1 farm system. We've got a young, talented major league team. We have payroll flexibility. We're past the pandemic. There's gonna be more and more people coming into the ballpark. There's a lot to look forward to."

As I board a flight back to Baltimore, wanted to say a sincere thank you to everyone who followed along with The Sun’s coverage this season, enjoyed my dumb jokes, didn’t prompt me to mute them, etc. It was a heck of a ride.
