In 1887, workers from NYC & nearby areas marched in a #LaborDay parade organized by the Central Labor Union. It was the labor movement’s 6th annual parade in NYC, but the 1st to occur after NY joined a handful of other states in recognizing Labor Day as an official holiday.

Glow Up 💡 #OnThisDay in 1882, Thomas Edison’s Edison Illuminating Company flipped the switch on his commercial power plant at Pearl Street, providing electricity to homes at a price comparable to gas. By the end of the month, they had 59 customers. The next year, they had 513.⁣

After Frederick Douglass escaped slavery and fled north in 1838, he took on a new name. The year of his birth is known as 1818 but he did not know the date. He chose to celebrate his birthday annually on February 14th.⁣

🥵 How did past New Yorkers beat the heat? By taking a dip in river water—despite pollution. Before public pools, NYC had river bathhouses: floating structures with a well sunk into the river water. At their height, 22 river bathhouses dotted the city.

#OTD in 1883 the beautiful #BrooklynBridge opened. Emily Warren Roebling—who was instrumental in guiding construction after her husband and chief engineer Washington Roebling fell ill—was the first to walk across it. Rumor has it she carried a rooster with her for good luck.

Nearly 400K black Americans served in #WorldWarI , but few saw combat as white officers believed they were better suited to manual labor. The exception was the Harlem Hellfighters, who spent more time in continuous combat than any other US unit. #StoriesofService #BlackCitizenship

“I’m not sure I’ll make it, but I’ll try my best.” In August 1926 Gertrude Ederle became the 1st woman to swim the English Channel. She also swam it two hrs faster than the then-record holder. NYC held a ticker-tape parade in her honor.

#OnThisDay in 1901 The Willis Avenue Bridge, spanning the Harlem River between Manhattan and the Bronx, opens for traffic. The opening celebration included a ceremony on the bridge, young girls in patriotic garb marching in a parade, and even the firing of a cannon. ⁣

Juliette Noel Toussaint (c. 1786–1851) was a formerly enslaved woman & the wife of a successful Black hairdresser. She helped fund the New York African Society for Mutual Relief's meeting house, which had a secret trapdoor for freedom-seeking enslaved ppl.

Hazel Ying Lee, a Women Air Force Service Pilot, & her brother died in WWII. Their family hoped to bury them in a cemetery near their Oregon home, but were prevented by “whites only” rules. After protest, they were able to lay them to rest.⁣⁣ #AAPI #MemorialDay

Abolitionist & civil rights activist Frederick Douglass escaped slavery #OnThisDay in 1838.⁣ ⁣⁣ He disguised himself as a free Black sailor with borrowed papers. After traveling by train, steamer, & ferryboat, Douglass arrived safely in NY less than 24 hours after leaving MD.

On February 17, 1919, 3,000 black American veterans from the 369th Infantry—made up of mostly New Yorkers, hence their nickname the "Harlem Hellfighters"—paraded up Fifth Avenue in valiant return from World War I. #StoriesofService #BlackCitizenship

100 years before Rosa Parks—there was Elizabeth Jennings. On July 16, 1854 she was violently prevented from boarding a streetcar labeled "whites only." She publicized the incident, sued the streetcar company, & won.
