Showers/storms will be around again today but best concentration will be in North Carolina into southern Virginia. Front pushes south going into the weekend bring less coverage for storms

Showers are beginning to develop across the region and will increase in coverage as the afternoon progresses. Very heavy rainfall is possible in a short time period, which could lead to isolated flash flooding. One or two storms may produce a burst of damaging winds as well.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat. Seems like an everyday thing now. Still in a pattern favoring heavy/torrential rains from thunderstorms, with also a marginal risk of damaging wind gusts from an isolated severe storm. The higher risk area today into this evening is across the Piedmont.

While nearly everyone has received some rain over the past several days, amounts from one location to another vary highly. Such is the nature of scattered summertime thunderstorms. Thunderstorms, this time of year, are driven almost entirely from heating and orthographic lift.

Had enough rain? Or want more? Well, the pattern stays favorable for showers/storms through Friday. The good: helps with drought conditions. The bad: Torrential downpours could cause flooding if storms move over the same area. Rates could be as high as 2 to 4 inches an hour.

Showers and storms continue over southwest VA, WV, and northwest NC through sunset. We are not expecting anything severe, just very heavy rain at times. Deeper thunderstorms can be seen over eastern NC in this infrared imagery from GOES-East.
