AI is eating the world. If you are spending time every day trying hard to automate as much of your job/company as possible, you have a seat at the table. Everyone else is on the menu.
Achaar is not pickle. English doesn't have a word for achaar.
Achaar is a glorious explosion of flavours. A pickle is a depressed cucumber that drowned in vinegar. They are not the same.
Devanagari is an extremely elegant script. But this was never explained to us in school.
A thread on the awesomeness that is devanagari.
Let's start with the things that my teachers did *not* teach me in school:
Did you know that all the nuclear bombs we exploded in the '40s-50s-60s have permanently contaminated all the steel the world has produced since then? All steel in the world is divided into two categories: pre-1945 non-contaminated steel, and post-1945 contaminated steel.
How?
OMG. A person whose last name is "True" has been locked out of iCloud for 6 months because the code got confused between the last name and the boolean value!
Anyone else getting this error from Apple iCloud ? In past or now?
I’m 6 months deep freeze & looking for any help.
I rem dead coding languages like kobalt.. & this seems like an Apple coding issue — not hardware
Germany to Botswana: Stop killing elephants
Botswana: Because of conservation efforts, elephant population has exploded. We'll send you 20000 elephants. You try living with them peacefully.
Not a joke: this really happened.
As a child, I always wondered why Indian words like राम always got written as "Rama" in English. To me "Ram" seemed like a much better fit for the pronunciation. I thought it was because of British arbitrariness.
Only recently I learnt the real reason for this. /1
Any time now I expect Mark Zuckerberg to step back and appoint an Indian guy named Shiva as CEO just so we can have a Satyam Shivam Sundaram of Indian CEOs at the top tech companies.
Two years back, the software industry hired a record 6L engineers. Last year it hired around 2.5L. This year (i. e. The year ending in March 2023) it looks like the number will be less than 1L.
This is the worst job market in India in at least 20 years if not more.
Stop whining about the traffic jam on Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Even Mount Everest has multi-hour traffic jams
The problem is that people want to do the same damn thing that everyone else does and on the same damn day
I no longer understand modern financing. I bought an appliance at Croma and was offered ₹5k discount only if I opted in for EMIs via credit card X. Paying 5k less for EMIs vs a lumpsum now makes no sense. I looked for gotchas, and there were none.
Why do both श and ष exist? (The difference in pronunciation was never explained) Why do ङ and ञ exist?
What is ऋ? Is it pronounced “ri” or “ru”, and in any case, why does it even exist if री and रु exist?
If you read any row horizontally, you’ll notice that your lip position and tongue position remains the same, and only the method of expelling air from your voice box, nose and mouth changes.
Much later in life, when I understood the meaning of the rows and columns in Devanagari, everything fell into place and I saw the beauty and elegance of it all.
Have you ever wondered why the alphabet is always written out as a 2-dimensional grid like this? The English alphabet a one-dimensional sequence without any organizational structure.
Hint: say aloud the letters in any one of the horizontal rows. Notice any similarities?
The entire क row has back of the tongue touching the back end of the palate. The च row has the middle of the tongue touching the palate. ट row = has the tongue curled back. त row = tongue touching teeth. प row = the lips together.
I bet Vishy Anand's greatest accomplishment won't be his own championship but the lasting legacy of world class chess he created in India.
Vishy's Children.
Congratulations! The Indian earthquake in Toronto is the culmination of the shifting tectonic plates in the chess world as the 17 year old Gukesh D will face the Chinese champion Ding Liren for the highest title. The "children" of Vishy Anand are on the loose!
Ever wondered why "sin" (of trigonometry) is called "sin"? Today, I decided to find out, and the history is fascinating. It comes from the Sanskrit word for bowstring which somehow got translated to the Latin word for the "pallu" of a toga.
Follow me down this rabbit hole 🧵
Now, read any column, and notice the similarities. The table in the previous tweet gives away the answer of course: in any column, the way air comes out of our mouth/nose/voicebox remains the same and only the tongue/lip position changes.
So, apparently, now RBI is mandating that banks disable copy-paste into the login/password fields!?
No more password managers?
God save us from the maai-baap government, which for our own good, implements strict rule (that will have the opposite of the intended effect)
In the next two tweets, I'll teach you the right pronunciation for ङ and ञ.
First pronounce न and म a few times and understand where the air is coming from. They’re nasals, so the air is coming out of the nose, not the mouth.
This is the original Sanskrit pronunciation of ऋ but modern languages decided that was too difficult and Hindi simplified it to री while Marathi picked रु. The original sound is no longer used by anybody and Hindi and Marathi have officially replaced it with cheap knockoffs.
Pre-1945 non-contaminated steel is called "low background steel". And when we need it, where do we get it from?
We go, find pre-World-War-II sunken shipwrecks, and then salvage the steel (and lead) from those to build our instruments which need heavy radiation shielding.
1. I'm going to say this one more time:
You do not get jobs by applying through company websites or by uploading your resume on naukri or monster or writing to careers
@company
.com
You have to get your resume forwarded by someone in the company or known to the company
Now look at this image and you should understand the difference between श and ष. श uses the same tongue position as च except you force some air through the space between the tongue and the palate ("aspiration"). Similarly the tongue position of ट with aspiration gives ष
Now pronounce क ख ग घ a few times and understand the tongue position. Now use this tongue position but try a nasal pronounciation (like न or म). The sound that comes out is the ङ. Similarly combining the च tongue position with a nasal sound gives ञ
If you're a STEM major, the US still remains the best place to go for higher studies. Based on discussions in social media, the US seems like a horrible place. But this is an illusion: the other countries aren't better; their problems are just less discussed.

I vaguely remember some TV serial where a forgery is detected because the steel used in the supposed-ancient-artifact was not low background steel. I don't know whether that's a real thing, or just fiction, but it's a great story. (We need more such stories in science teaching.)
1/n In about a month, Google is expected to announce that they've achieved Quantum Supremacy. If confirmed, this will be a historic moment, similar to the Wright Brother's first flight.
Here's a thread with an over-simplified explanation of what that means.
The vowels also fall into the same rows. For अ आ start with the same tongue position as क ख ग घ but then take the tongue away from the top so that air flows unobstructed. (Vowel = unobstructed airflow.) And इ ई uses the tongue position similar to च. उ ऊ are related to प.
Now start with the tongue position of ट (or र which is in the same row). But take the tongue away from the top of your mouth so there's unobstructed airflow. And try to say "अ" keeping your tongue curled. Congratulations! You just said ऋ correctly for the first time in your life

The size of an A4 sheet of paper is 210mm × 297mm.
297/210 = 1.4142
This is a special number. Let' see:
A3 is 297×420. 210/148=1.414
A2 is 420×594. 594/420=1.4142
This true all the way up to
A0: 841×1189. 1189/841=1.414
Can you guess why?

Now is the time to be *extra* careful with Covid safety. More so than March (remember those days?)

Foreign celebrities talking about Indian issues is not really worrying. They're irrelevant and will fade in 3 weeks.
What is worrying is that the Indian government routinely cracks its whip on Indian celebrities, and they snap to attention and perform like circus animals
Why do we care about traces of radioisotopes in steel? When making Geiger counters, or medical devices to check for radioactive contamination, or astronomical instruments, the emissions from the contaminated steel would interfere with the measurements.
So we need pre-1945 steel
Random etymology for the day. खर means donkey in Sanskrit. khar means the same in Persian. घोष means sound in Sanskrit. Gush means ear in Persian. Combine those, and we get “animal with large ears like a donkey”—khargush=खरगोश=rabbit
Apparently, IKEA stores serve food because they realized that hungry customers don’t shop for long. So, they sell food at the lowest price on food within a 30-mile radius, so they sell food at a loss but they make it up in furniture
In fact, there are a lot of naturally occurring radioisotopes also. For example, Carbon 14 is regularly created naturally by cosmic rays. All of us are constantly breathing in all these radioisotopes. In fact, the entire concept of carbon-dating depends upon this.
Nuclear bombs (including the tests) create a lot of radioisotopes that are not found in nature. For example Cobalt-60 (a radioactive version of Cobalt-59). And since the 1945 Trinity test, these have all dispersed in the atmosphere.
What does this have to do with steel?
1/ Did you ever realize that the avatars of Vishnu in Vedic mythology loosely track the theory of evolution?
My grandfather pointed this out to me 40ish years ago, and it still blows my mind somewhat
Thread.
The process of manufacturing steel uses atmospheric air (or atmospheric oxygen). Some of the radioisotopes like Cobalt-60 get pulled in too, and as a result, any steel produced after 1945 has embedded in it some of these radioisotopes, sitting there emitting gamma rays.

One of my favorite side stories from the Mahabharata is that of Yavakrita, the youngster who wanted to become knowledgeable without putting in the actual hard work of learning from a good teacher.

Sample stats from privacy report on Indian apps:
• 75% of apps know exactly where you are at all times
• 52% read all your SMSes
• 5 is the average no of 3rd parties parked inside an App
• 94% share your data with at least one 3rd party

Just to be clear: the contamination of the atmosphere (and steel) with radioisotopes is not considered a health hazard (or even a significant environmental problem) because the amounts are really tiny.

The extra "-uh" sound which is the difference between गम and गम् is called a schwa
And modern Indian languages like Hindi and Marathi all have an (unwritten) rule that the schwa at the end of a word isn't to be pronounced
This is called schwa deletion /3
