Some know my story, but after my parents divorced when I was 7 (both my parents are great) my mom did all she could to raise us. That meant growing up in HUD homes, using WIC and food stamps. The world I’m in now still feels so foreign to me. I still have much to learn.
Talked to a family office last night. “We’ll write a $5M get to know you check, but we want to start doing $20M-$30M sized bets.” They said they’re tired of investing in funds because while having average performance is fine, they want to make a direct impact and bigger returns.
Looking forward to a great

. I’m excited to be attending as CEO of a funded oncology startup. I’ve assembled a great team and we’re looking forward to a productive event. See folks soon!
Maybe I’ve missed it, but is there a good resource on building a biotech (therapeutics-focused) budget? This is one area that I personally need to optimize better. Any advice from VCs who often look at Seed and Series A budgets would be helpful!

, we just got data from our CRO that shows our AAV9-based gene therapy for aging has activity in vitro! Will be posting the report on GitHub shortly. We hope to be working with CDMOs soon to scale up production. Appreciate the support and backing of
Funding secured…for our lead program. Official PR coming soon, but I had to share. Top score to boot! Thankful for the team I’ve been able to assemble! Go,

Celebrating 18 years of marriage today! I’m proud of what we’ve built so far! Life-hack: Find someone great to do life with and it’ll make your life so much better!
Saturday night grant writing. $3M on the line, so worth it to put the hours in! We’re excited to have been asked to move on to the next stage! Good thing I have an awesome team driving this home! More to share soon, but I’m absolutely grateful to be able to be where we are!
About 8 months ago, I was struggling with anxiety at an extreme level. Still not gone, but realizing who I am and who God is really transformed me and gave me freedom. I’m accepted, not perfect, and being transformed. Don’t have to do it on my own.

Pro tip: Translating academic research into drugs is hard. Doing it with a team that’s not equipped, hasn’t done it before, and led by people who “know enough to be dangerous” is a bad recipe. The funds and startups that address this fully will be better positioned to succeed.
Not as great of a pic as I wanted, but it was great to have

Been a great journey from an idea in the lab. Some of you have watched this story since I was a postdoc yammering about an idea to raising our initial funds, to this. Feel proud to be a part of this team and to have great backing.

Those who know me know how truly passionate I am about developing transformative therapies. Truly an honor to have the support and backing of all involved to make this a reality.
Today we are spotlighting our VP of R&D, Board Member and Co-Founder, Michael Torres, Ph.D. We are thankful for the experience he brings to managing our company's Dallas site where we are advancing our

The PCSK9 $VERV debate is an interesting one. Gets back to target and proving your platform. It’s odd to me because investors want low risk, validated targets, yet targets like Her2, CD19, etc are “bad” targets, yet novel is too risky, but the commercial risk can be enormous if
This is going to be a crazy week. Hope to lock down the syndicate for my Seed round now that we have the final term sheet in hand. Go

It’s an interesting paradigm where you can be sitting on good science, but to move it forward, it largely hinges on how good you are at telling the story. If you don’t nail that, it’s going to be mighty difficult to raise from VCs. Thoughts?!
I hope 2024 is the year I can do more direct investing in startups. What better way to make a difference than by directly supporting entrepreneurs and teams working to create medicines that could impact so many. Why get your name on a building when you can point to a therapy?!
It’s nice when a BD guy with close to $10B in transactions thinks my strategy is spot on. Makes me feel like I really have a shot to be a successful entrepreneur that brings effective drugs to patients who have none. Proud of the work being done at

Watching Sunday news and seeing the “months to vaccine” timelines. We don’t have a great track record with developing vaccines for viruses. Just amazed how much it seems we’re expecting that to be a magic bullet coming ASAP.
Send good vibes my way. I’m having a meeting today with a group that are doing some really cool things. I’m fortunate to be able to take my time, but I’ve prepped hard for this one.

Some of you guys know, but we’re weaning my oldest daughter off of
#keppra
. She’s been seizure free for 3 years, so we will see what happens. A little scary for us as parents. She did great on the medicine and no issues on the meds. She’s actually in GT and top of her class.
Proud Dad moment! Our girls got their STAAR scores back! Master’s in all subjects and my oldest scored in the 99th and 100th percentile for math and reading!
The ORR of ADC2 in patients treated with similar payloads was 5.3%. And the ORR of ADC2 in those treated with different payloads was as high as 22.6% (P = .180). (Lots of good info to unpack)
I had a really great meeting with my teammates today. We’re building something unique. If there’s any seed investors interested in the ADC space, let me know. I’ve got half the round committed and would love to have a solid lead VC step up.
I have a simple goal. To make select investors a lot of money so they’ll invest in whatever I like, carte blanche. Alternatively, if I ever get a nice exit from ReCode, I’ll angel invest myself and make it easier for others in the future.
We’re pushing hard to generate additional data to support our work! Happy to collaborate with folks interested in addressing an interesting aspect of aging! We’ll soon have highly pure AAV9 virus suitable for animal models or patient-derived models!

Bought $MDGL at $247 this morning and just sold at $301. Not bad as a day trade. Takes me back to the good old days! (Plenty of “loosing” trades in my book!)

My 2nd grader just discovered she can write the authors of her favorite books to ask questions. Not surprisingly, most authors write back and are delighted. She has consistently said she wants to be an author and illustrator. Trying to encourage this as much as we can!
