After some consideration i have changed the way i do commissions purely because my current model is kind of unsustainable and quite taxxing. So here are my new offers and price listing.
Despite the fact that there are many elements in Tolkien's writing that are surprising and worthy to be praised, Moore is not exactly wrong here. Many of Tolkien's sentiments in the books are despite everything, conservative in a very specifically English way.
This is genuinely some of the most emotive and realistic piece of voice acting in history and i have no idea how they mustered up this much genuine anger and confusion. This needs to be studied.
It was like, overnight and it's baffling to think that something that was so everpresent for eight years simply ceased to exist because we all collectivley decided it wasn't worth it.
Eight years of memes, refferences, a presence you could not get away even if you tried and didn't care and all of this, ALL OF IT, undone to such a point that i can't even remember the last time i saw GoT refferenced or talked about.
'But who would clean the sewers in your anarchist society, hm?'
You will. The fact that this question is posed with such sneering contempt merely shows how the people asking this see themselves as 'above' such low work and demand others do it for them.
Genuinely one of the worst one of these to come out. The man was a sword-bearer and page to the most powerful man in Japan and 'fought for a while' against the men who betrayed and killed Nobunaga and willingly surrendered, after that was released to the Jesuits.
The common denominator between the two is that they're both being constantly accused of some sort of vague sexual perversion, especially compounded by the fact that the harassment JoCat receives is often homophobic, and Bunlith is, crucially, a *trans woman.*
twitter's massive and unwarranted hatred of these two needs to stop being ignored there are full on harassment campaigns against people for fucking existing and it's infuriating that the cycle just keeps repeating itself
Frodo, contrary to what we might think, is not 'common' in the sense of wealth. He's actually filthy fucking rich, and his class relationship with Sam is one of a wealthy man and his much younger, much poorer servant, even if they deeply love each other.
YouTubers needing to censor words like 'murder', 'suicide', 'genocide' and 'death' in their videos is one of the bleakest displays of the rampant sanitization of the Internet. I'm watching a video where so much had to be censored and muted that the sentence was incomprehensible.
An understated part of this James Somerton debacle is the fact that he laundered Nazi propaganda back to his audience in stupendously vapid attempt to make himself appear academic.
But the overall point is that nobles of high breeding and the correct blood and lineage have a mythic and spiritual right to a throne to a fallen kingdom, which will then heal upon their ascension to the throne.
Tolkien's relationship with monarchy is more complicated. Towards the end of his life he began espousing 'anarchist-esque' beliefs, and his treatment of monarchy in LOTR is more informed by fairy tales and folk tales than political sentiment.
This is in truth very Arthurian, and is i suspect what Tolkien wanted to capture, rather than making a political statement, but the core logic of kingship being granted upon a sacred and holy birthright *is* there.
I'm not a fan of how consistent it is that Bethesda will release a mediocre or downright broken game, everyone agrees it's mediocre and broken and then years down the line we have tens of thousands of people suddenly claiming they're hidden gems of game design.
@ThatRogueTrader
@zachsilberberg
Christopher Eccelston, he played the Ninth Doctor and has been vocally anti-monarchy and called Elizabeth 'parasite in chief'
Sorry but the fact that a trans teen got fucking... arrested and taken away into foster care because she couldn't go to school, because the school makes it impossible for her to be herself is gonna make my stomach hurt for the rest of the day.
Like i said many times before, the whole 'trans women VS femboys' is a manufactured culture war led by right-wingers in an effort to further drive a wedge between GNC men and trans women and to isolate them and potential trans femmes from a supportive environment.
His relationship with race has been explored at lengths by thousands of people but to put a long story short, Gimli and Legolas becoming firm friends does not make Tolkien's depiction of non-white people any better.
This is again a consequence of Tolkien being a very English man born in the late 19th century. I don't say these things to vilify him or portray him like the worst racist, but that this simply was the time and environment he grew up in.
People who weren't on tumblr in like the mid 2010's really don't get how prevalent historical misinformation was under the guise of social justice. For example: Jesus was depicted as a Middle-Eastern man until the Borgia's whitewashed him to hide his Jewishness.
Yes, yes, we all know about Sam's inner monologue about the fallen Haradrim warrior. It's a very important scene that i think people gloss over, but even with that, people of color in Tolkien's work are often evil, mislead and antagonistic towards the 'white' characters.
Tolkien was a war veteran who saw one of the worst battles of WWI first-hand and lost most of his friends. He uses Eowyn to instill to the reader that wanting to heal and mend and grow things is aspirational to everyone, and not just women.
I feel like i should add an addendum that SHOULD be obvious but none of these criticisms are meant as condemnation. It is actually entirely possible and mature to enjoy a thing while being aware of it's flaws.
Eowyn becomes a healer and a homebody not because she sees that war is a man's world but because she has seen it first hand and decides that she wants no part in it, as it is a cruel and horrible business.
Would i call it *misogynistic?* Eh, maybe not THAT extreme, but Tolkien wasn't exactly a feminist in his life. He famously made his wife give up on a promising pianist career so she would stay home and take care of the kids, something she resented him for, for years.
Tolkien's relationship to women is a bit tricky. Tolkien placed women on a very patriarchal pedestal, but i wouldn't argue that his treatment of Eowyn was informed by *hateful* misogyny but more by him trying to communicate, again, that war and battle are not glorious.
Despite this, Tolkien doesn't give as much time or consideration to his female characters as he does to his male ones. Arwen does not even have a single line in the books.
I need all of you to see this painting done by Chris Appel, of a Prohibition era Gangster being held by his trenchoat, balancing himself on the running board while on the move, blasting a fucking Mi-Go with his Tommy Gun. Funniest fucking piece of Lovecraft art I've ever seen.
@Angry_Crow24
I don't know how many times you people are going to throw this around like some sort of 'gotcha' as if the actress herself didn't say that they had to factor in how long she'd be in it costume and how many stunts she'd be doing that made the one on the right impractical
None of what is said here is true, it actively goes against Japanese accounts of the man. These fuckers do not give a shit about history, if they did they would not be this angry about a black samurai and yet never get angry about white samurai in fiction.
For what it's worth i genuinely love the two powerful women in his books and what he wanted to communicate with them, but it's not a stretch to say that Tolkien treats women in a very old-fashioned way.
Galadriel is a stand-out character, who wields unimaginable power without even commanding force of arms or being a warrior herself. She tears down Dol Guldur with her own magic.
I also should mention, on account of 'imperialism', that Gondor ceded Rohan to the Rohirrim as a gift, and then the Rohirrim proceeded to displace the native Dunlanders, who are portrayed despite this in a very negative light (and of a darker skin). So yea.
Tolkien wrote Gimli and Legolas as two noble characters who slowly come to regard each other as best friends and mend the relations between their two peoples and yet the only thing people get out of it is that fantasy racism is fun.
This distinctly American drive to imagine that corporate superhero blockbusters are somehow on the same level as mythology and folklore is so pathetic, as if there isn't actual folklore you can read an engage with that has existed for hundreds of years in the public domain.
Utterly and completely unnecessary. The original trilogy hasn't aged a day. Instead of doing something new we're stuck reliving the past 20 years in a vapid display of infantile nostalgia. No one wants this. No one asked for this.
The fact that certain individuals have managed to convince tens of thousand of young queer people that 'lesbian' is not or was ever an umbrella term despite the very clear messy and complicated history of the term never ceases to amaze me.
There are some fantasy races that are simply evil by design. Trying to change that now is impossible bc this was established centuries ago.
40K understands this simple concept. Can u imagine a friendly Drukhari or Tyranid? I can barely imagine a half-decent ork.
Japanese anime, manga and video games often include white samurai. Samurai Champloo has one, in Nioh you play the literal William Adams (Yasuke also appears) and Sword of the Stranger features a white mercenary fighting for a Chinese assassin organization in Japan.
What they truly want anarchists to say is that someone else, someone they won't have to see or think of for a moment in their lives, will do all the work they don't want to do so they can maintain their mode of living without care.
Absolutely insane to see people portray nuns as somehow being a progressive, feminist choice for women and a symbol of bodily autonomy and not, y'know, patriarchal Catholicism that sees the female body as inherently sinful and in need of curtailing.
This is the end result of young queers growing up entirely online in very rigid, sequestered, moralizing environments with steep penalties for stepping out of line and they carried with them that authoritarian and reactionary impulse to police those they deem to be deviant.
so that when you see the Harkonnen soldiers in their exotic, clunky, alien, and impractical suits you understand immediately why the utilitarian ways of the Fremen can easily wipe them out
What is so telling is that they cannot deny Yasuke existed, so instead they present the historical facts around his life in the least flattering way possible, collapsing the context and portraying Yasuke as being a glorified show-pony or jester for Nobunaga.
@Sallymander40k
Tolkien was VERY pastoral in his sentiments. This included a very specific vision of life and the people in it. Those were the sentiments he felt safe in. I don't say this to judge him, but to explain him.
so my latest application for food stamps got denied again and I'm sick for like the 3rd time this winter so if anyone wouldn't mind throwing a few bucks my way so me and my partner can eat and stuff that'd be cool

So many people are desperate to claim that Disco Elysium is somehow politically centrist because it 'makes fun of communists too', it so clearly comes from people who have never been around communists at all.
Japan has way less issues about these because they acknowledge them as part of their history and more so, see it as evidence of the strength of their cultural tradition that various foreigners wanted to engage in it and became established figures in their society.
God, i feel like this testosterone discourse can be pretty cut and dry
- trans women are allowed to feel like testosterone damaged them personally
- it is important not to portray testosterone as the 'bad hormone that will turn you into a violent hairy monster'
Everyone on this thread making fun of a functional poly couple for the crime of uh, preparing snacks for a fun night of sex apparently, are so desperately fucking broken. Find something better to do with your time than make fun of people who aren't harming you.
None of these fucks criticize the many depictions of William Adams, or John Blackthorne who was largely inspired by Adams, or Nathan Algren. This only became an issue when a triple A video game decided to feature a prominent and historical black samurai.
Bunlith animating her 'sona in the 'Japanese man screams about sex' video was met with a torrent of transmisogynistic abuse because a trans woman proudly displaying her love of sex and her own sexuality was of course seen as cringe at best and nefarious at worst.
@TooSmalley
That speaks to how easily Tolkien can be read as supporting many things to many people. Hippies will see his concern for nature and the environment and his anti-war sentiments. Fascists will see the very black and white racial dynamics and the mythification of 'The West'
Just as a caveat, like this is obviously tragic. It's wistful and melancholic, but it's not cynical. It makes you appreciate but also pity the vampire in question and i feel those feelings are more rewarding than sheer revulsion at a vampire's inhumanity and cruelty.
But honestly that's just one problem with this whole 'discourse', there's a whole host of other issues not readily apparent. Like the assumption that this mode of industrial, urban living is the height of human life that must be maintained at all possible cost.
The reason why 'leftists' are telling Ukranians to give up to 'save themselves' is not out of pacifism but because they see Ukranians not as people, but as political tools serving American interests that need to be murdered and oppressed for the sake of "anti-imperialism".
Y'know what i don't think it helps at all to constantly post edited Stone/Toss comics and the 'oh btw the person who drew this originally is a Nazi' disclaimer does nothing to shrink his fucking presence in media and popular culture.

@casersatz
'Alex Jones is being silenced for being conservative'
I'm sure it has nothing to do with him inciting people to shoot up Pizza parlors and harras victims of school shootings.
Todd in the Shadows' video goes into it, but Somerton stated that a) the SS was made up of gay men and b) American GI's had a crisis of masculinity because German soldiers were physically stronger than they were.
'Okay but no one really WANTS to clean sewers'
Yea, and no one really WANTS to grow food, make clothes, build houses. It's not what we *want* but it's what people for thousands of years *needed* and then *did*.
@Bonesdrawstuff
You don't give your personal swords to someone to carry around for you unless you hold him in the highest esteem and trust. Yasuke was also given a fucking house. In every regard he was treated as a man worthy of position and respect.
1/ An 18-year-old Russian has become the youngest person confirmed to have died fighting for the Russians in Ukraine. His death, only two and a half months after signing up, followed the Russian government's decision in 2023 to let teenagers go to war straight from school. ⬇️
This takes the very real issue that Jesus in Europe was relentlessly whitewashed and then used that to simply state... a whole load of genuinely conspiratorial nonsense that simply wasn't supported by even cursory reading of online material.
Letting Nazis take a dominance on the take that the meme isn’t funny is actually a very bad idea and will led to disaster, why are we actually advocating for this????
Sincerely cannot imagine calling your twitter handle 'queersocialism' and going to bat for Russia, a state so famous for it's brutal repression of marginalized orientations and genders that American conservatives praise it and hold it up as a beacon of defense against queerness.
To expand on this a lil' bit more, there is a prevailing, dominant impression that the work needed to maintain communities can only be exacted through coercion or financial incentive.
And don't even get me started on the sheer insanity of 'MedievalPoC', a tumblr that probably contributed greatly to an absolutely warped sense of history, that instead of focusing on actual people of color in history, made a lot of spurious claims and literally made shit up.
Point a) is quite literally a homophobic conspiracy fantasy that made some headway in the 80's, but it's also basically soft Holocaust denial. Point b) is simply astounding and you can only believe it if in truth you know nothing about WWII in the first place.
IPoS taking a huge risk here talking about a specific very popular YouTuber and his Evangelical Christian, far-right politics and as someone who has spoken on this before, I have to applaud him and wish him the best.
Genuinely what the fuck is up with this impulse to outright make shit up about random people online so you can get angry at someone. These are two Polish teenagers having fun and you project your own seething anger at them for what, exactly?
@APWestRegion
If someone wanted to tear down the Notre-Dame or Aya Sophia to build a telescope there, the plan would be DoA, but since these are indigenous people their sacred places are considered unimportant to the whims of white people.
German soldiers were not somehow physically larger or more imposing, or beautiful, than the supposed malnourished, ugly American GI. This is quite literally Nazi propaganda. Straight up.
It feels so weird to me, growing up in an irreligious household, that some people just... live with parents who genuinely believe Jesus is coming any day now to end the world and this is just seen as normal. This shit is just scary to me.
It was a kind of pop history for people who genuinely wanted to feel like they're good people who deprogrammed themselves away from whitewashed history but then ended up with a collection of misinformed beliefs that were sincerely held and violently enforced.
And this is portrayed somehow more agreeable than the simple answer that communities will take care of their own needs not out of any high-brow ideological convictions but the simple needs of living that will inform human actions.
What we have now is that we are simply used to all our amenities being outsourced to a source of manual labor that we don't have to see or think about. It's astonishing to me that these basic material conditions of modern industrial living are simply assumed to be natural.
Marvel movies are not mythology. They're not folklore. They're corporate IP's that are routinely kept away from the public domain so they can be squeezed for money. Calling it 'modern mythology' is downright insulting and an attempt to make it seem more important than it is.
Like, this is straight up just revisionism, Fallout 4 was widely derided upon release for utterly destroying any RPG elements that were central to Fallout as a series but now all of a sudden everyone is 'actually it's a great game'. Honestly.
American 'leftists' keep referring to the specter of the 'Ukranian working class' that they 'support' but then never actually listen to them when they say 'we stand against the fascist Russian invasion and want you to stop dominating the discussion while we're being killed.'
Meanwhile people are now being outright reactionary and contrarian about New Vegas, as if the praise it consistently gets for over a decade now is unearned or overblown.
40k fans get so angry when Sororitas are portrayed as anything other than fashion models and it's so disappointing given how GW's official art portrays them as appropriately grizzled (art by Igor Sid)
I love how every few years there's a new reactionary hate mob erupting from lesbian spaces and it's always related to a perceived loss of 'purity' as defined by it's proximity to maleness and we have to understand how fascist this is.
