It's important for non-racialized kids to see me. Growing up, there were few Black role models in school. It's essential for Ss to see me teaching, especially math & science. I'm a Black man, 6'3 & got more than a few tattoos - not what your "typical" teacher looks like. #OntEd

Just came to a sad realization: I never had a Black male teacher. Not one ... not in grade, middle, or high school & definitely not in higher ed. I recall one in high school but he didn't teach academic level courses. What does that say about the career choice of education?

#BackToSchool highlight: two of my new Ss pulled me to the side during a mask break to inform me of their preferred pronouns & names. Overhearing them, another Ss who came out (to me) last year, shared that their identity is fluid & will update me when ready. Love it! #OntEd

Every time I hear, “I’m not racist, I have Black friends” or equivalently in #education , “Some of my fav students are Black,” I cannot 😴 There’s a dangerous myth that proximity to Blackness immunizes white folk from having attitudes rooted in racism or being racist 🚩 #edchat

Covid has highlighted many terms need to go. "Pivot" was first. Let's add "at risk" to the list. We all know that's coded language for Black, Brown & other POCs. Last I checked my Black & Brown Ss were full of potential. Let's be clear, it's the systems that pose risks #Onted

a #teacher once accused me of misinforming my Ss by glorifying being from the "hood" 🤦🏽‍♂️ i asked her where she was from bc anyone from the "hood" doesn't glorify it, we use it as motivation or to share our story reflecting back, this was one of my MANY early #Karen encounters
