🧵1/3: This is an excerpt of the exchange between yours truly (A) & OSDE counsel (Q) re: the book Stamped: A Remix by @JasonReynolds83 & @ibramxk during a hearing to revoke my teaching certificate. Citing OK's HB 1775, OSDE considers such a text "unlawful r*cist instruction."

As I arrived home to boxes and boxes of my life’s work, my classroom’s contents (the books, the posters, the Takis bags, the notes and graduation announcements and Taco Bell coloring-book pages) haunting the darkness of an otherwise empty apartment, you finally drew blood.

🧵1/3: I am tired. I am terrified. But I am no NPC. I am no easily dismissed casualty of just another culture war. And I am certainly no one's unwitting pawn. I am no hero, but I am human. I am a reader. I am a protagonist if the plot demands it. I am a fully certified teacher.

🧵1/11: Normally, during #BackToSchool season, I would be a ball of nerves filled not w/ air but anticipation, bouncing skyward w/ a little bit of physics & a whole lot of hope. But this year, I feel more like a chalk outline--empty inside, a poor facsimile of the person I was.

🧵6/6: You've learned about book bans; you've learned what to do about them; here's your chance to do the damn thing now ... & again in November. Laws come & some should definitely go. Civic engagement as muscle memory? That's forever, though. @UABookBans

This #Halloween , I’m going as my 100% still valid #OklaEd teaching certificate. To bigots haunted by 📚 you scream go bump in the night, the people in those pages scare you in your smallness, but they aren't the actual monsters. And neither am I. This T isn’t afraid of you. Boo!

Imagine a teacher being unable &/or unwilling to answer questions in the moment before an unpredictable audience from anyone who isn't also the dashboard of their car. Such a person should probably pursue a different line of work. #oklaed #TeamNelson #Election2022 #votED

🧵2/3: I will not beg for what belongs to me, but I will open a window so the room can hear the voices of #OklaEd , voices belonging to Ts & Ss, voices that cannot be so easily silenced. I will not speak for them, but I will speak in support of them ... again & again & again.

@GovStitt Hi, it’s the “Norman teacher” here. This AM, I booked a one-way ✈️ out of OK. Want to know why? You. You’re the problem. It’s you. #OklaEd Ss & Ts deserve better. I’ll be working to make sure my OK kids & colleagues are closer to “better” by the next Statehood Day. Imagine that.

🧵6/6: HB 1775 is an intentionally porous conduit for bigotry, the moldy Swiss cheese of legislation, if you will. Ergo, it comes as no surprise that this justification for revocation is actually just a profoundly stupid work of fiction.

🧵2/6: The thesis--revoke her certificate--is the rhetorical equivalent of pineapple pizza, discernible but indefensible. While it does attempt to explain, that explanation's ridiculous. From page 1, what little credibility (ethos) the author & signatory have is already cracking.

Representation matters. Stories (and who gets to tell them) matter. As a teacher, but more importantly as a person, I refuse to be party to this censorship. Do with that what you will. But whatever you do, please vote @GraceForOK on 8/23. #oklaed #elaok #OKleg #fREADom 3/3

I see a certain someone is back to using a beige car interior as the backdrop for his partisan drivel. In completely unrelated news, my #oklaed #elaok teaching certificate is still active. #QRCodeResistance #BooksUnbanned #TeamNelson
