Phonemic Awareness is a great warm-up. I❤️ to target the sound we are focusing on. It doesn’t have to take long either! Blending & Segmenting 2 minutes (w/out letters). The adding, deleting & substituting with letters.

Writing instruction begins with EXPLICIT handwriting instruction. It’s embedded into the DAILY phonics lesson. It supports the phoneme-grapheme correspondence. It requires kids to think about the strokes for each letter and have sufficient practice and feedback.
@SoRclassroom
The Science of Reading isn’t a program or curriculum. It’s a body of research for teachers to guide their instructional practices to assure literacy. There’s lots of great resources out there to help your classroom instruction, knowing how and why to use them effectively is key.
Decoding 2 phonemes.
The precursor to additive blending (successive blending, continuous phonation) with 3 sounds! Love this scaffold for emerging decoders. Don’t forget to discuss word meanings!

Is b/d a reversal problem for your Ss? We use articulation to help with formation!
When you make the /b/ sound your mouth is closed. Therefore, start with a straight line.
When you make the /d/ sound your mouth is open (more like a circle), so start with a circle!

Open/closed syllables in K. I’ve been wanting to explicitly teach this for weeks. Today, I went for it and taught how several of our new irregular words, weren’t really irregular. They’re just an open syllable. Here’s the lesson introduction. Stay tuned for more.
@SoRclassroom
Explicit handwriting instruction begins with grip, posture, paper placement, strokes and more. When we can make these automatic, we reduce the cognitive load placed on Ss and they can focus on letter/sound correspondence and CONTENT writing.

A Kindergarten VOCABULARY routine.
1. 🎥Say the word 3x. Segment the phonemes. Clap the syllables. Give a Ss friendly definition.
2. 🎥 Say more about the word. Use a sentence from the text/content.
3. 🎥Provide examples and non-examples. Ss give 👍 & 👎 to show understanding.
Open syllables in Kindergarten?! You bet! If teaching the high frequency words: me, he, she, we, be, go, & no, it just makes sense!

We are blending! We are reading! We are starting off with 2 phonemes & the first is a vowel. Vowels are continuous. It’s easier on K’s working memory at this point.

Obsessed with this book! It has made such a difference when teaching ❤️ words! I now can give a reason why.
Today we learned “my.” Loved explaining that words in English don’t end with an i. Check out the whole video here:
Today we had an explicit lesson on the nasalized /a/ sound when combined with /m/. I got the idea from UFLI. Overtime, with decoding and encoding it will be unitized and become a word they know by sight. Stay tuned for an on Wednesday!

I love using letters when appropriate to strengthen the phoneme grapheme correspondence.
When spelling with Kindergarteners in the early stage, saying and segmenting the word after they write each grapheme is crucial. Their cognitive energy is so consumed with the phoneme-grapheme correspondence, that they often forget the word they’re spelling

Decoding 4 phonemes. After reading, “The Seeds of Learning” I anticipated this might be a difficult step for them. Taking author, Tera Sumpter’s, advice, we broke it down into more manageable steps. CC+VC

The Syntax Project in Kindergarten.
We are learning all sentences have a WHO & a DO.

➡️Drew a picture of a WHO & DO with our vocabulary word.

Took a chance today and tried some MORPHOLOGY instruction with K. 2 of our vocab words had the prefix: non. Definitely a little uncomfortable, but it’s how we grow as teachers! K learned they love to watch TV non-stop! 😆

What does early writing look like in K? It begins with transcription. Automaticity of letter formation, fluency of phoneme-grapheme correspondence, the ability to segment sounds & fine motor acquisition.

Tap It! Map It! Graph It!
At this stage, our biggest struggle is remembering the word we are spelling!
That’s why handwriting fluency is so necessary.
Eventually we won’t have to devote so much cognitive energy to letter/sound correspondences and letter formation.
Today we used “alone” & “lonely” to help Ss understand how to spell “one.” Thanks to
@nikkibteaching
for the help. She has AMAZING instructional videos.

Every time I sit down to plan a lesson for a letter/sound introduction, I pull from the varied resources I’ve bought over the years. Something so simple, yet it requires a lot of thoughtful planning. If we know their misconceptions, plan for it.

Learning the articulatory features for /f/.
This is a vital understanding. When Ss are finally introduced to quiet /th/, they can rely on teeth placement to distinguish between these 2 similar sounds.
If you expect it, pre-correct it.

your strong, cumulative KNOWLEDGE building is key to literacy. There isn’t random sprinkling of unrelated topics. The science & history build within a grade level and year to year. BRAVO.
