A danger before a vote has been counted of some progressives repeating the triumphantalism of the right in 2019. In truth the election will reflect a starkly disillusioned electorate who having demanded change to the status quo in 2016 & 2019 are really hoping its 3rd time lucky

@MattChorley @TomHCalver The election win remains a remarkable achievement (Levido / Brooks / DC utilised BJ’s polarising appeal to exceed all expectations). But yes, I fear we are in violent agreement on BJ’s popularity, which evolved (receding but with increased intensity) following the referendum

We must also build trust in regulated news sources - particularly the BBC. I’m not blind to its failings but I saw first hand during the pandemic the vital role it plays in our national conversation. Its role in a fractured media landscape will be more important than ever before

Huge challenges ahead but there is a *small* pathway to an electoral victory in 2024 but first weeks critical. The PM has to show the country he understands and will deliver on *their* priorities. This is what Boris did so effectively in 2019

Unsurprisingly, the ‘supermajority’ message has made people *more* likely to vote Labour 👇

Ok, this is the absolute chef's kiss moment of this GE campaign. New polling shows that repeated Tory warnings of a Labour supermajority have made people... more likely to vote Labour (by 2-to-1 vs more likely to vote Tory). Glorious.

Negotiations for TV debates take months. Everything is up for negotiation: format, presenter, location, arrival shot, audience demographics, which candidate speaks first, who closes the debate, which side of the stage they stand, how many interjections they can make, how many

4/ The govt needs to move away from the rigid focus on ‘media management’ and the longstanding obsession with the daily news cycle, instead giving greater weight to policy development & serious strategic communications

7/ Despite 24/7 rolling news & social media, the govt still runs a predominantly analogue system in a digital age. Digital skills are still in short supply & broadcasting experience is extremely limited – with emphasis still disproportionately aimed at print. This must change.

All elections are ‘change or more of the same’. The Conservatives hope to convince voters to ‘stick with the plan’ but that’s an incredible difficult message to land when the country is clearly crying out for change. Hear my general election take on @TimesRadio earlier today 👇

🗣️Thoughts from this weeks focus groups: Chichester, Birmingham, Clacton, Edinburgh, Grimsby & Bridgend 1)Talking to different groups in different places brings home how vast the Tories problems are: they haven’t just alienated a single group but have lost trust across the board
