My safety flag sticks out 70cm, which is less than half the clearance drivers are supposed to give when passing. So, driver of blue Mini MF68YFR shouting "you need to pull that thing in mate", you are the reason I have it.
In 60 years of walking, I've never been nearly hit by a cyclist. In Almost half a million miles of driving, I've never had a problem with a cyclist. Yet I am endangered by drivers, sometimes deliberately, every time I ride my bicycle.
@jasonball
As a pedestrian I've nearly been knocked down by cyclists more times than I can count and as a driver, it never ceases to amaze me how many cyclists run red lights to avoid "breaking their cadence".
Just reported this driver. 50cm away at 22.5 miles-per-hour. This was without doubt a deliberate punishment pass because the driver didn't like my correct road position.
Driver of MM70UMF, when you blast your horn because you have an issue with my safety flag, you are showing without any doubt that you are the reason I use it.
It extends out less than half the distance you should be leaving when you overtake me, as defined in the Highway Code.
So, amid the 'war on motorists' crap from Government, they have withdrawn the statutory guidance on providing for active travel
This really is the war on active travel.
People who want to walk & cycle: "We need safe space so we're not killed."
Councillors: "Can't do that, not enough room."
People who drive: "I bought this huge car and I have nowhere to store it."
Councillors: "Leave it here at the side & on the footway. There's plenty of space."
Just finished submitting video of this driver, from this morning, to
@GMPTraffic
. About 45cm away at 40 miles-per-hour. Without a shadow of a doubt, this was deliberate, and was probably a result of the culture wars stoked up by the right wing press.
It's always annoying when a van driver tries to lecture you on his ignorant, made-up rules for cyclists. It's even more shocking when it comes from a serving police officer driving a liveried
@GMPolice
van!
A perfect example of the kind of entitled attitude from drivers that results in people getting killed or seriously injured. This driver really believes that their "right" to go as fast as they like is more important than the lives of someone's mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers.
GM Police are taking this case forward for prosecution, fixed penalty or a driver improvement course. 90cm away at 30 miles-per-hour is far too close in a huge tipper truck like this. Thank you
@GMPTraffic
. (No video as it may go to court.)
When you have both baby grandchildren to look after, you really understand how utterly selfish some motorists can be. Just three of several examples from this morning.
Use your head. Wear a helmet and flameproof suit every time you drive. 🧠

I really hope GMP prosecute this driver who passed me about 70cm away at 30mph today in this behemoth. (Note, the load sticks out a good way beyond the wheels of this trailer.)
Something needs to be done about all these bl**dy stupid barriers on the canals in Wigan. I have to remove my panniers to fit my bike through and lift the back end high to get the handlebar under the rail. How the hell does a disabled rider manage?
Seems like a metaphor for Bolton Council's attitude to cycling. The red sign represents the (evidence-based) officers and the blue one represents the (social media-based) Council Executive.
Good grief. I had a chat with the owner of this when I was leaving Aldi. He said each of the two motors is 1000W and he's been up to 40mph on it. That's an illegal motorcycle, not an electrically-assisted pedal cycle.
It's as if there's a competition to see which news outlet can be the most ridiculous in its anti-cycling campaigning. "A FAMILY have told of their horror after learning their home is set to be demolished to make way for a new cycle path."
This approach to the cyclops junction is part of Bolton's newest cycle infrastructure, and will also form part of the "flagship" Manchester Road Corridor scheme. This is why people are able to say: "waste of money; nobody uses it anyway"! 1/6
Yesterday I was pushing my granddaughter's pram along a pavement when a driver drove his car up onto the pavement right next to me, a few inches away. I looked at him and shook my head. As I was walking away he got out and started screaming at me, calling me a knobhead. Really?
Drivers! Before you decide to overtake someone on a bicycle this closely because you think they delayed you by a few seconds, make sure that: (a) they're not recording you on high quality video, and (b) your vehicle tax didn't run out two months ago. Reported to GM Police.
Last year, Bolton Council rebuilt this 40mph speed limit road (not just resurfaced). They then painted these cycle lanes back just slightly wider than before. According to the guidance (LTN1/20), these unprotected lanes are unsuitable for a 40 mph road.
Got caught up in a Critical Mass this afternoon on Blackburn Road. Motorists exercising their right - I mean privilege - to be on the road. They seem to hold them far more regularly than the cycling ones, but they didn't seems to be enjoying it as much.

Oh dear; such a deliberately obtuse response. You know perfectly well that the fact he was riding a bike has nothing to do with the fact that he attacked an old lady. By all means mention that he used a bicycle to get away. You usage of language here is pure prejudice.
On the left is a space that Bolton council considers isn't big enough for cyclists and pedestrians to share, so they banned cycling there. On the right is their new shared walking/cycling "facility" at the busy Astley Bridge junction.
@DameSarahStorey
What cynical BS is this,
@boltoncouncil
? On a 40mph road, a brand new "advisory cycle lane", 1.3m wide, disappearing at pinch points. And you've the damn cheek to ask "why not walk or cycle?" on a flashing sign! Watch my lips: LTN1/20!
@DameSarahStorey
@Chris_Boardman
@bricycle
Dear
@ElectricityNW
. Your use of this red sign on Moss Bank Way, Bolton is a breach of the code of practice for "Safety at Street Works". If the main carriageway is still open, the yellow sign is more suitable.
A good example of how our motor-centric street design forces people cycling to come up with strategies to keep themselves safe - in this case by being well ahead of the motor vehicles when the lights change - and how motor-centric rules attempt to prevent that.
@bike_rogers
@gazza_d
🤣 I've been doing similar for years & wrote an article about it in 2018. I tend to use it only on roads where I get very bad, frequent close passes, like Belmont Road to the North of Bolton, but it makes a massive difference and saves me a lot of time on police reports.
Pleased that
@GMPTraffic
are serving a notice of intention to prosecute on this one. Oncoming drivers failing to give way on minor roads with parked cars is a very common issue.
This
@BoltonAtHome
driver didn't endanger me at all, but broke the law to save about 4 seconds. I haven't submitted to the police because I haven't time right now. Would others bother reporting this?
Are these just intended as an art installation,
@MiddlebrookRLP
? As cycle parking they are practically useless. Far too close together and far too close to the wall.
THREAD. A consultation isn't a referendum,
@BoltonCouncil
. You think you had overwhelming support for the town centre cycling ban in your PSPO consultation? Here is the actual support put into context. (Areas are proportional to the number of people.)
Breaking news. In Ideas With Beers, those brilliant folks at TfGM just showed us (approximately) what the junction of Trinity Street and Manchester Road is going to look like. More info tomorrow from myself and Graham L.
Whenever a driver blasts the horn at me, screams, gesticulates, and/or tailgates me, it just confirms my decision to take the lane was the right one, as they would undoubtedly have done a dangerous overtake. It also confirms we need protected cycle lanes on all major roads.
I saw several families out on bicycles today (all carefully keeping their distance from others). I can't remember the last time I saw even one family out cycling. We must not lose this when the lockdown is over.
Finally, a local authority has actually cut to the chase!
"plans for low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) traffic restrictions across every residential neighbourhood in the borough."
How do we report to you your Bee bus drivers putting us in danger,
@BeeNetwork
. This one's going to the police anyway, but I'd like to start reporting these to you as well.
Interesting nature or nurture question. Do Range Rovers just attract selfish, entitled morons, or does driving a Range Rover turn ordinary people into selfish, entitled morons?
Free schools meals: "lefty nonsense"
Free healthcare: "lefty nonsense, scrap the NHS"
Free higher education: "lefty nonsense, charge them fees"
Free parking: "I demand my right to park my big arsed SUV wherever I f'ing well please".
Just to be absolutely clear. When a councillor claims that it is "not their fault" when a driver kills or injures someone on a cycle, refer them to the law, which makes them clearly responsible.
Update: I have already had a good response from Bolton Police, with an apology and undertaking to educate the officer. I am very satisfied with this speedy response. I've suggested wider guidance to officers might be helpful as well.
Apparently the scheme has many compromises because there isn't enough space to do better. This is because it's all to be done: "without, of course, inconveniencing responsible motorists" (... to quote our Exec Member for Highways and Transport.) 5/6
News. What I believe is the first close pass case to come to court through

Some youngsters showing us what the Chorley New Road and other proposed Bolton cycleways are all about. Also shows: how pleasant walking is when separated from traffic, and how much space is still available for drivers to use. (Picture from an Active Travel Forum member.)
Thirty years ago, I'd cycle about 12 inches from the kerb with a silly little flag sticking out 12 inches from my right seat stay to keep drivers away.
It's easy to forget that most of our councillors still live in that world; that's why we have such a long way to go.
This thread makes me think of a variation of an old joke" A motorist, a cyclist and a pedestrian are designing a road. The motorist takes 80% of the road space, then says to the pedestrian: "Watch out for the cyclist; he wants to take your space".

That's fantastic. In my first full year of cycling to work, I covered over 4000 miles, saved 92 gallons of diesel, equivalent to £572 and 1.11 tonnes of CO2, handed in my work parking permit, saving £160, and we got rid of one of our two cars, saving about £1500 per year.
When you walk down Ashworth Lane in the rain, you have to try to avoid walking in this river. Whatever could have caused this damage? Pavement cycling, perhaps?
That awful moment when you're approaching a pinch point, you hear a car approaching from behind, and it sounds like it isn't slowing down. This idiot will be "having his collar felt" I think.

Highway code 170:
Take extra care at junctions ... watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way.
Many drivers have forgotten that or their instructor never told them 😉; this is to remind them.

This driver was referred to Court for Dangerous Driving.
After being found guilty the driver was disqualified for 15 months, given 60 hours Community Service and a fine of £180.

For goodness sake
@GMPolice
, take this awful rubbish down! Blaming someone hit on the footway by a drunk driver for not wearing hi-viz and a helmet? Does that apply to people walking on the footway as well?
@CyclingInASkirt
A cyclist, a motorist and a pedestrian were designing a highway. The motorist grabbed 90% of the space then said to the pedestrian: "watch out for the cyclist, she wants to take your space".
@Chris_Boardman
When I went on Crimewatch Roadshow with the (original)

team, the producer told me to come in my cycling clothes. So I did: cargo shorts, sandals and a short sleeved, cotton shirt. 😀
@i_was_an_enigma
@boltonathome
Well, he didn't *have* to do it; he chose to do it. As others have pointed out, use of cycle lanes is not compulsory. But also it's difficult to use a cycle lane when some dick-head has parked a car in it.
So, in a morning I ride 4 miles to my granddaughter's home. I hitch her little bike to the trailgator and we ride 0.8 miles to her school with her whooping, singing and chattering all the way. I take her bike back and then ride the 4 miles home. A great way to start the day.
This is the brand new cycleway on Trinity Street, Bolton. Compare the surface to that of the carriageway. Even a "prestigious" facility like this shows clearly the attitude of our Council to activate travel vs motoring.
@pseuderman
Their shout through the window as they passed suggests they probably would have tried to overtake me extremely closely into oncoming traffic. Otherwise, why would they be annoyed.
@Jonthemon6
First, because that's the safest place to be in a lane that isn't wide enough for a safe overtake in the lane. Second, because I'm preparing to turn right ahead
But all that is irrelevant; drivers must follow the highway code even if they don't understand the reason.
GM Police result: "forwarded to the Central Ticket Office for the driver to be dealt with for the relevant offence with a view to prosecution and or, the offer of an awareness course if applicable".
