[thread] Cultural hegemony is a concept developed by Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci. It describes how the state and ruling capitalist class use cultural institutions (soft power) to maintain their grip in capitalist societies. (1/3)

Our national anthem is an anti-working class hymn. If people had any real understanding of the true history of this country or any sense of class consciousness, God Save the Queen would be drowned out by boos every time this grovelling drivel was played.

🧵 Just to recap, because events move so fast, it’s hard to make sense of them: firstly, a group of far right politicians, social media ‘names’ & organised fascists jumped on a tragedy to claim that the person responsible for the carnage in Southport was a Muslim / refugee. 1/13

Hegemonic culture propagates its own values and norms so that they become the "common sense" values of all and thus maintain the status quo. Cultural hegemony is therefore the main tool used to maintain consent to the capitalist order, rather than the use of force. (3/3)

Let me just explain something & then I’m out of here. It’s not really about @jeremycorbyn . But when you don’t speak out to defend him, as a long standing anti-racist & former leader of the party, I think you probably won’t defend me either. And I think I’m right.

“If the press is to choose our Leader, it will also choose our policy, and once you accept that, then you are saying there can’t be a Labour Party.” - Tony Benn.

Hundreds (I’d estimate 500) at the #BlackLivesMatter demo in the shadow of the Cathedral on Palace Green, Durham. Socially distanced, disciplined & average age around 20, I’d say. Very inspiring & moving. #ICantBreathe

Marchers witnessed multiple provocations, threats of violence, abuse & shouts of ‘rapists’. The only reason they didn’t get what they wanted was because of the self-discipline of the pro-Palestinian protestors. The policing was surprisingly relaxed, considering the tension. (2/3)

Message I’m hearing from the @UKLabour grassroots seems pretty clear: let’s ditch the sniping, hyperbole, game playing & backstabbing, deal with issues we have collectively, so we can concentrate on what’s really important: kicking this Tory Govt out of power for a generation.

What people outside of the organised left don’t realise about @HackneyAbbott is that she was a fighter & a trailblazer: someone who’s politics have stayed consistent for over three decades. No one’s perfect, but people like Diane, who’ve led from the front, deserve some respect.

On Thursday, after picking up my daughter Heidi from school (she was ill) and walking past the train station in Durham, I witnessed something so awful, so brutal that it replays in my mind the minute I close my eyes. (1/3)

The person arrested for the stabbings in Southport was named as Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, as reporting restrictions were lifted - again, in an attempt to establish that the perpetrator of these horrific acts was not a Muslim. None of this mattered to the far right. 6/13

I want to say this politely, because not everyone realises the damage they’re doing, but if you see @Lowkey0nline as the bad guy & if you throw around un-researched & un-evidenced accusations of racism, it’s time to educate yourself, not just about the man but Israel & Palestine.

We’re now firmly entrenched in a political culture where bullies win, either publicly or behind the scenes. And they know it. And they will keep doing it. Shame on @glastonbury .

“It’s not clear why” Jokes 😂 I can confirm that @LauraPidcock has left the Labour Party. Interesting that she only informed @UKLabour through the correct, private channels & yet the press had hold of this info within hours, though. 🤔

Take a bow @BorisJohnson . You & your party have starved the #NHS of resources, taken chunks out of it for the private sector, destroyed its accountability, undermined & undervalued its staff & decimated training & development <sarcastic applause 👏👏👏>
