I'd like to share my most recent article with Oxford's Journal of Islamic Studies. It looks at a particular current among Sinophone Muslims, and attempts to emphasize theology - Maturidism - as key to understanding sectarian faultlines in Qinghai-Gansu.

On Nakbah Day (15 May) ANU staff released a statement of solidarity with the student encampment calling upon the administration to divest from all entities complicit in violence against Palestinians. I am proud to have my name in that list. We ask all ANU colleagues to join us.

The GCC isn’t being “lost” to China, but rather, this issue is being utilised (at least in Bahrain and Kuwait) in the context of local political struggles (akin to what’s happened in Indonesia, Malaysia).

Glad to finally be able to share this study I wrote with Steven Hai and Kameal Alahmad examining the past and present of Saudi Arabia's techno-scientific transformation, and China's role therein. Many thanks to @EvanFeigenbaum for the opportunity!

A full advertisement page from Al-Riyadh newspaper fully paid by the ‘association’ of Chinese companies in commemoration of the Saudi national day. Gives a sense of their presence/diversity in the country.

My newest KFCRIS study on China in the Red Sea is out. The report examines various issues, including how this maritime zone is conceptualised in Chinese academic discourse.

Some interesting tidbits from the Algerian intellectual Malik Bennabi's autobiography, Witness to a Century. In the 1930s, during his time in Paris as a student, he embraced a vision of Japan as a liberator of Asia. During the Saudi-Yemeni war (1934), he wrote to...

Another reason to hate cliches in writing - trying to search about a Saudi connection to the emergence of Taiwan's semiconductor industry? 99% of the sources are facile comparisons of Taiwan as the "Saudi Arabia of semiconductors" 😑

Pretty cute: apparently a small edifice was set up in a park in Guangzhou to commemorate the 1980 voyage of the Sohar vessel (a recreation of a medieval ship) from Oman to China. The actual ship was returned to Muscat and set outside a hotel, and the edifice was built in 2018.

This piece leans closer to the truth on the matter on Saudi-Iranian re-engagement. China is a beneficiary of a process that had been ongoing for a while. I do not yet see evidence of a change in Beijing's modus operandi.

A report I wrote for MEI Singapore on China and its stance towards the Qatar crisis. It looks at the writings of Chinese academics and officials in order to understand the rationales underlying China’s approach to the issue so far:

Since a few people were asking about the Maoist propaganda reel entitled "The Palestinian People Must Win" (巴勒斯坦人民必赢) from 1971 and which I briefly mentioned in an old article, here it is:
