Thomas was misbehaving. No matter how many times he was inspected, oiled, or pushed along, he would not start. The big model railway show was the next day at 10am. "Oh dear," said The Vicar, "I suppose I shall have to use Spare Thomas instead!"

There was a big fair at the Bluebell Railway when Thomas visited, with dozens of stalls and many vintage vehicles to talk to. "This all been arranged for me?" asked Thomas in bemusement. "Well, you are the most famous engine in the world!" laughed Bluebell.

The brewery on Thomas' branch line has a small yard for loading barrels. A steam lorry called Elizabeth handles local deliveries, and the railway takes them further away. But one day, a rude lorry had taken Elizabeth's place. "Blimey, another kettle getting in my way", he moaned.

There is a Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge at Vicarstown which crosses the Walney Channel, so the Fat Controller's engines can travel to the Mainland.

In the cold air, the children's breath came out as fleeting clouds of vapour. They darted around the school yard, blowing great streams of mist up, pretending to be trains. "Look Rheneas," they called, "now we're just like you." On his way up to the Top Station, Rheneas tried it!
