Ex-physician, ex-academia, ex-biotech startup. Dog-mom. looking for a job/project. Critics say I have a mediocre Twitter presence. I say I am better in person.
@EM_RESUS
Also, when a critical patient suddenly says ‘I am scared, something is off, I don’t know what but something is about to happen’ they are about to code until proven otherwise.
My brand new sister in law found 80k hours (independent of me), read their career choice guide and concluded that she should switch to.. being a florist 💐!!

I don’t understand how it is okay for a therapist to divulge patient notes/health info to a commercial writer (vs legal requirement). Is it some free-pass from working in the Bahamas?
Shout out to the one person at
#EAGlobal
who asked me ‘So, how does having a puppy tie into doing the most good for our future’ amidst endless ‘Aww an EA dog is what we need’, ‘Hope this inspires more EAs to get dogs’ and ‘He is soo fluffy and soft’ -s.
@malkeasaad
EM needs SLOEs to apply. Which are usually given only to people with rotation through VSAS. VSAS is not available to IMGs. Rotating in ERs is not available to IMGs. That’s why you won’t get applicants
Mr. Mushu will unfortunately not be attending
#EAGbayarea
after his debut at EAG SF last year. He is sad to be missing all the scritches and belly rubs.
@pskantesaria
As an IMG who cannot get rotations just like AMGs can, I can vouch that if the focus shifts to letters and rotation evals for residency, there is not much that our CV can say for us.
Unless step 2 is the new step 1
I asked
@joel_bkr
to guess my weight last yr vs now (having gained some weight) and he guessed both right to the rounded off digit. Now he wants me to accept that he has superpowers. Men just want one thing and it to be able to estimate things. Disgusting.
I kinda like doing work-trial tasks. I get to work on a variety of new topics, possibly learning new techniques while getting paid. This is actually the most writing I have done in a long time!
@IDdocAdi
It's a very isolating experience in total. You definitely regress on the the socialization skills you ever had.
It's paradoxical with how interactive and people-focused the profession is in reality (on the patient front).
Was he not officially a therapist but a person everyone paid to speak with? How was he prescribing then? Is this somehow not HIPAA violation? Does the US practicing license take that into account?
Random cafe thought: Why do we chose to neuter dogs rather than opt for vasectomies if the idea is only population control?
Given castration increases risks of obesity, orthopedic conditions and possibly reduced lifespan if done too early (before puberty).
I studied mpox for work back at the beginning of the ‘22 US outbreak and my biggest takeaway then was ‘I am so glad that it is not Clade I that’s spreading right now’.
So naturally, I have my eyes peeled, following the current outbreak for a while now.
I am following this closely
Monkeypox in this week's Sentinel minutes: ~60% Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in the next 12 months, case fatality rate currently 3-5.5% but probably extrapolates to 0.2% if it goes global; probably 1-5x times as worse as seasonal flu if so.
@brianluidog
I assumed it was because bags are handled by people and above a certain weight it is hazardous for them to move it around, lift it overhead etc.. nothing to do with peoples weights. I have never looked this up tho.
Should other patients of his be worried of having spoken to him? Or rethink their continued relationship with him as a care provider (book mentioned that he was a therapist for a lot of EAs) ?
How is job hunt going you ask?
I am excited about working as an invalid variable!! So. Much. Impact.
I miss being valued for what I bring to the table.
It’s 9 pm in Mexico City, it’s pouring down outside, I am at poke place, the waiters are playing with my dog while I am listening to a podcast and they just gave me a free carrot cake slice.
Life’s is good atm :)

I have the best dad and I’d like to share him with anyone who might need some amazing dad-ness in their life. He is wholesome and I am a very lucky daughter :)
A while ago a dreamt of an active PPE (face mask) with far UV-C inside it. Somehow the the light didn’t touch the face but was like a shield 1cm from the face that worked on every inhaled exhaled air.
I keep thinking about it. Someone tell me that this won’t work, so I can stop.
Yup, I would currently need to go back to India, apply with a stack of paperwork, wait 15 days, and come back if I want to take a 4 hour train to Paris (from London).
Applying for my 10th schengen visa for a 10 day business visit.

Very real, it’s in motion. She has found a local florist who’s work she liked to apprentice with bcz ‘Going to art school to study flower arrangement seems like overkill and probably something rich kids do’.

How are people able to write and maintain blogs?
I have played with the idea myself but am struggling to find the motivation to volunteer my time to the effort required. Apart from not knowing what I’d write about..

From my best understanding, a year long break from working in customer care with the board of equalization for California state. The place you’d probably call when you are stuck when filling taxes.
I have seen this first hand: a bottleneck to speedy research in active COVID emergency state was access to vaccines. This frustration is across the board, in academia & biotech/pharma and across a range of countries. precious manpower spent. It seems like an easy policy win
Vaccine equity needs to be pursued on many fronts, including supporting development of next gen vaccines as well as localized research and manufacturing capacity. But some pharma giants are happy to frustrate such efforts in fear of competition.
I just got off a feedback call for an interview that I didn’t progress on (really impressed that they took the time to do that) and the second most important improvement they mentioned was ‘eye contact’ on a zoom interview. I feel silly to be neglecting such a fixable thing!!
I don't know how to think about this, there is so much buzz around longevity biotech at the same time when >50% positions for superspecialization in geriatrics go unmatched.
Them: That’s crazy talk, you work in a hospital and don’t get COVID tested. NYU and Columbia does it for students
Me : You think that’s crazy!! I was working in a hospital without masks earlier this year. How about that..
@CBSNews
This is amazing. But there are young doctors in the city who are licensed to work in other countries just not here.
Maybe they should be given a chance.
*me : gets a dog so that it can get me out of bed early each morning.

The curse of knowledge in the context of being trained as a doctor:
I am frequently astonished by how people navigate their lives like having a tummyache or unexplained regular sounding symptoms.
Why can’t everyone be taught basic physiology and OTCs?
Final finals week for my Masters and it's been a wild ride this semester trying to learn machine learning and coding on zoom university. Will be done in a week. Until then, goodbye sleep. Can't wait to started with ERAS again.
I watched ‘Poor Things’ recently. Beautiful movie, great work. But weirdly enough it has made me miss being a surgeon. Enough that I looked up what it would take for me to go back to becoming one!!
5 star recommendation, watch at your own risk.
How's this for an idea. If

Can relate. For a long time I did not engage with the feminism discourse because I felt like an outsider cz I have somehow only been around ‘men that are not out to get me’ and genuinely amazing humans. A lot of it has a strong flavor of victim mindset as well.
We are all flawed

I managed to not a buy a single clothing item in the shade of beige for the whole yr. I wrote down beige but subconsciously included grey as well.
A smol win but has me excited to match it for ‘24.
I will be leaving the US soon without a solid plan of returning after having moved here 5 years ago (not leaving by choice). My brother asked me what i’d like to do here for my ‘final days’.
Personal top pick: Go to Costco

I won a national research award/studentship in 2009, was given 5000 rupees by Indian Council of Medical Research for 2 months of work. It’s peanuts but I was thrilled.
I just found out that this year they award INR 50000 to recipients.
Woah! This is awesome!

Can anyone who is dealing with mild/moderately symptomatic patients hint towards a possibility? Id like to gather data if so.

Whoever invented the phrase “it’s only downhill from here” clearly never rode a bike. That’s the best part!
Never going to not use it in the opposite context. Correct me and get ready for the weirdest argument ever..
My nephew (8 going on 9 in Feb) is really into Minecraft. Any suggestions for a great Christmas present?
(For ref, Last yr he was into Pokémon and received so many cards/sets for Christmas that he grew out of the Pokémon phase. I got him a drum set instead and he loved that)
I don't get ‘triggered’ by most things, but anyone telling me any version of ‘
getting married’ in response to my immigration woes as an Indian really does it. Petition to please retire such jokes. Thanx
Will AI in medicine be driven more by computer scientists or clinicians?
@lhpeng
believes it will be clinicians since they are the users
Am I correct in assuming this refers to clinicians with an active license to practice instead of clinicians pivoting careers to work on it?
Medical AI straddles two distinct cultures by existing at the nexus of medicine and computer science. In this clip,
@lhpeng
reflects on some of the differences between the two communities in conceptualizing and solving major problems. Full episode:
Your weekend long-read is here.
Ngl, it’s a bit dense but I learned a lot about CE modeling just helping with the writing. Surprised by the low engagement so far, looking forward to some comments/insights!

FGM actually removes the clitoral glans or the whole clitoris along with the hood by a non medically trained person without anesthesia/basic antiseptic precautions. (I believe often with nothing more than a blade/knife.) Analogous thing for men would be much more graphic.
@amedstudentlife
You are too nice to be a surgeon.
Also - You are crazy to be pursuing residency in the United States, stick to what you can get at home.
Also, about residency at home - Why do you want to be a surgeon, your practise will never take off. Be an ob/gyn instead.
If AGI-related existential risk is inevitable, is there a sense in figuring out and putting plans for AGI proof bunkers or countermeasures for intermediate risks before the big boom?

Welcome to the dog parent club! It’s a weird middle ground between not being a parent and being an actual kid parent where both think you are being unserious.
Curious as to which dog parenting advice tipped you over ? Crate training? Sleeping on bed? Type of food?
